    IAAF Diamond League Media Information Guide 2013 www.diamondleague.com 1/37 INTRODUCTION With the creation of the IAAF Diamond League we set out to reinvent the one-day meeting structure of our sport, to bring clarity to the top tier circuit of international invitational competition which takes place outside the IAAF World Championships and Olympic Games. While there remain many challenges ahead if we are to make further advances and cement the IAAF Diamond League’s position as one of the world’s major sports series, we firmly believe that we have made an exceptionally good start in the first three years of the new competition structure. The IAAF Diamond League has a worldwide audience and a broadcasting reach undreamt by the Golden League series which preceded it. Thanks to a 14 meeting circuit which covers Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the USA, a competition programme that includes virtually the full spectrum of Olympic track and field disciplines, the guarantee of the world’s greatest athletes battling to win 8 Million Dollars in prize money, accumulating points season long to win their event’s Diamond Race Trophy, the IAAF Diamond League has captured the public’s imagination like no other non-championship athletics competition. I eagerly look forward to the 2013 season of the IAAF Diamond League which commences in Doha and concludes at the end of August and beginning of September with the finals in Zurich and Brussels. Lo recalco porque para las madres, los hijos son siempre especiales… Pero Yelena, al parecer, sabía que con esfuerzo podría llegar a cumplir aquella promesa: “Voy a ser la mejor del mundo y campeona olímpica”, le había dicho a su madre en una tarde de juegos en casa, años atrás. Su palabra, desde luego, peligró cuando con 15 años se quedó sin el sueño gimnástico por ser demasiado alta (1.74 metros). Entonces, Alexandr Lisovói (su instructor de gimnasia) tuvo la claridad de presentarle la chica a su amigo y entrenador de salto con pértiga, Evgeny Trofimov. Allí le hablaron por primera vez sobre Bubka, y contestó: “¿Y esa quién es?”… Pero de la mano de Trofimov, la talentosa discípula encontró en la “vara” una amiga y utilizó cada una de las bondades heredadas de sus 10 años inmersa en acrobacias gimnásticas para dominar su cuerpo en el aire, y volar. Seis meses después de aquel encuentro, la primogénita de Natalia y Gadzhi Gadzhiyevich Isinbayev, ganó su primer título en Moscú en los Juegos Internacionales Juveniles de 1998. Desde ese día, el éxito se convirtió en su palabra de orden y “Lena” resonó en el mundo mientras el salto con pértiga florecía gracias a su empeño.

Media accreditation 3 IAAF DiaMOND LEAGUE MEdia GUidE INTRODUCTION Welcome to the 2019 season of the IAAF Diamond League. Now in its 10th year, the 2019 series will be the first that will conclude just weeks before a global championships. Athletes earn points in the first 12 meetings to qualify for two finals. As part of the overall US$8million in prize money available across the series, the finals offer a prize purse of US$3.2 million. $100,000 is at stake in each of the 32 Diamond disciplines, including $50,000 for each winner along with a stunning Diamond Trophy and a wildcard entry to the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019. In 2018, 360 million viewers from across 161 countries spanning all six continents worldwide watched the world’s top athletes compete in the IAAF Diamond League, an increase of about 78 million on the previous year. Further emphasising the IAAF Diamond League’s global credentials, athletes from 83 different countries took part in the 2018 season, with 34 of them producing winners across the series. The 2019 IAAF Diamond League – which takes place in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America – will set the scene for the world’s third-largest sporting event.

Deaner2 1 Department of Biology, Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI, USA 2 Department of Psychology, Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI, USA ABSTRACT Many scientists agree that expertise requires both innate talent and proper training. Nevertheless, the highly influential deliberate practice model (DPM) of expertise holds that talent does not exist or makes a negligible contribution to performance. It predicts that initial performance will be unrelated to achieving expertise and that 10 years of deliberate practice is necessary. We tested these predictions in the domain of sprinting. In Studies 1 and 2 we reviewed biographies of 15 Olympic champions and the 20 fastest American men in U.S. history. In all documented cases, sprinters were exceptional prior to initiating training, and most reached world class status rapidly (Study 1 median D 3 years; Study 2 D 7.5). In Study 3 we surveyed U.S. national collegiate championships qualifiers in sprintersn ( D 20) and throwers (n D 44). Sprinters recalled being faster as youths than did throwers, whereas throwers recalled greater strength and throwing ability. Sprinters’ best performances in their first season of high school, generally the onset of formal training, were consistently faster than 95–99% of their peers. Collectively, these results falsify the DPM for sprinting. Because speed is foundational for many sports, they challenge the DPM generally. During its first five seasons, the IAAF Diamond League has captured the public’s imagination like no other non-championship athletics competition. Spread across Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the USA, the 14-meeting series includes a competition programme of 32 events representing virtually the full spectrum of Olympic track and field disciplines, and offers a total of 8 million US dollars in prize money. At the core of the IAAF Diamond League is the Diamond Race with athletes battling season long to accumulate points in each of the 32 event disciplines to win a 40,000 USD cash prize, a spectacular Diamond Trophy and, having shown season-long consistency, the unchallenged honour of being their event’s world No.1.
