Singing together is an expression of feeling with a long history. One can imagine people humming and enjoying their songs around some ancient campfire before recorded time.

Instrumental music and singing provide some of the best times at camp, where nature provides us a setting in which we feel kinship with each other and with all life.

The songs in this collection are camp favorites expressing joy, fun, humor, deep thoughts and reverence- we hope you will enjoy some great moments of singing! --Laura Sanborn, 1962

ASH GROVE C Am F G C Am F G Down yonder green valley, where streamlets meander, Where twilight is fading, I pensively roam. C Am F G C Am F G Or at the bright moontide in solitude wander amid the dark shades of the lonely ash grove C Am F G C Am F G ‘Tis there where the blackbird is cheerfully singing, Each warbler enchants with its notes from above C Am F G C Am F G Ah! Then little think I of sorrow or sadness, The ash grove, the ash grove, spells beauty for me.

6 BOTH SIDES NOW Joni Mitchell

G Am C G Bm C G Bows and floes of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air, C Am C D And feathered canyons everywhere, I’ve looked at clouds that way. G Am C G Bm C G But now they only block the sun, they rain and snow on everyone. C Am C D So many things I would have done, but clouds got in my way. G Am C G C G C G I’ve looked at clouds from both sides now from up and down and still, somehow, Bm C G C D Dsus G C G C It’s clouds illusions I recall. I really don’t know clouds… at all.

G Am C G Bm C G Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels, the dizzy dancing way you feel, C Am C D When every fairy tale comes real, I’ve looked at love that way. G Am C G Bm C G But now it’s just another show you leave ‘em laughing when you go. C Am C D And if you care don’t let them know, don’t give yourself away G Am C G C G C G I’ve looked at love from both sides now from win and lose and still, somehow, Bm C G C D Dsus G C G C It’s love’s illusions I recall. I really don’t know love… at all.

G Am C G Bm C G Tears and fears and feeling proud to say, “I love you” right out loud; C Am C D Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I’ve looked at life that way. G Am C G Bm C G But now old friends and acting strange, they shake their heads, they say I’ve changed. C Am C D Well something’s lost and something’s gained in living every day. G Am C G C G C G I’ve looked at life from both sides now from win and lose and still, somehow, Bm C G C D Dsus G C G C It’s life’s illusions I recall. I really don’t know life… at all.

7 CIRCLE Harry Chapin

Chorus C G All my life’s a circle sunrise and sundown C The moon rolls through the nighttime ‘Til daybreak turns around. F All my life’s a circle but I can’t tell you why. C G C Seasons spinning round again the years keep rolling by.

C G It seems like I’ve been here before I can’t remember when C And I get this funny feeling that we’ll all be together again. F No straight lines make up my life and all my roads have bends. C G C There’s no clear cut beginnings and so far no dead ends. (Chorus)

C G I’ve found you a thousand times I guess you’ve done the same C But then we lose each other it’s just like a children’s game. F And as I find you near to me a thought runs through my mind C G C Our love is like a circle let’s go round one more time. (Chorus)

8 CIRCLE GAME Joni Mitchell

C F C F G Yesterday a child came out to wonder, Caught a dragonfly inside a jar. C F Em F G C Fearful at the sounding of the thunder, and tearful at the falling of a star.

Chorus C F C F C And the seasons they go ‘round and ‘round And the painted ponies go up and down. F C We’re captive on a carousel of time. F Em F We can’t return, we can only look behind from where we came Em F G C And go ‘round and ‘round and ‘round in the circle game.

C F C F G Now the child’s gone 10 times ‘round the seasons, Skated over 10 clear frozen streams G F Em F G C Words like when you’re older must appease him, and promises of “someday” make his dreams. (Chorus)

C F C F G Sixteen springs and 16 summers gone now, Cartwheels turn to car wheels through the town. G F Em F G C So they tell him, take your time, it won’t be long now ‘Til you drag your feet to slow the circles down. (Chorus)

C F C F G So the years spin by and now the boy is 20, though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true. G F Em F G C There’ll be newer dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty, Before the last revolving year is through. (Chorus)

17 THE GAMBLER Kenny Rogers (Capo 2)

A D A On a warm summers evening, on a train bound for nowhere D A E I met up with a gambler, we were both too tired to sleep A D A So we took turns at staring out the window at the darkness D A E A The boredom overtook us and he began to speak.

He said, son I’ve made a life out of reading people’s faces And knowing what the cards were, by the way they held their eyes So if you don’t mind my sayin’, I can see you’re out of aces For a taste of your whiskey, I’ll give you some advice.

So I handed him my bottle, and he drank down my last swallow Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light And the night got deathly quiet, and his face lost all expression Said, if you’re gonna play the game, boy, you gotta learn to play it right.

Chorus A D A You got to know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em D A E Know when to walk away and know when to run A D A You never count your money, when you’re sittin’ at the table D A E A There’ll be time enough for countin’, when the dealin’s done.

Every gambler knows that the secret to survive is Knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep ‘Cos every hand’s a winner and every hand’s a loser And the best that you can hope for is that I end asleep.

And when he finished speakin’, he turned back for the window Crushed out the cigarette, faded off to sleep And somewhere in the darkness, the gambler he broke even But in his final words I found an ace that I could keep. (Chorus 3x)

G C G C D G Pulling weeds, picking stones. We are made of dreams and bones. C D G Em A D Need a place to call my own for the time is near at hand G C G C D G Grain for grain, sun and rain find my way through nature’s chain C D G Em A D Tune my body and my brain to the music of the land

G C G C D G Plant your rows straight and long. Temper them with prayer and song C D G Em A D Mother Earth will make you strong If you give her love and care. G C G C D G An old crow’s watching hungrily From his perch in yonder tree C D G Em A D In my garden I’m as free as that feathered thief up there!

19 GHOST RIDERS Stan Jones Am C An old cowpoke went riding out one dark and windy day. Am C Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way. Am When all at once a mighty herd of red-eyed cows he saw, F Am A-ploughin’ through the ragged skies… and up a cloudy draw. C Am F Am Yi-pi-yi-ay. Yi-pi-yi-o… The ghost riders in the sky.

Their brands wuz still on fire and their hoofs wuz made of steel Their horns wuz black and shiny and their hot breath he could feel. A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky, For he saw the riders comin’ hard and he heard their mournful cry: Yi-py-yi-ay. Yi-pi-yi-o. The ghost riders in the sky.

Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred, And shirts all soaked with sweat, They’re riding hard to catch that herd, But they ain’t caught them yet. ‘Cause they’ve got to ride forever on that range up in the sky On horses snortin’ fire as they ride on, hear their cry: Yi-pi-yi-ay. Yi-pi-yi-o. The ghost riders in the sky.

As the riders loped on by him, he heard one call his name. “If you want to save your soul from the devil ridin’ on our range, Then, cowboy, change your ways today or with us you will ride, A-tryin to catch the devil’s herd across these endless skies.” Yi-pi-yi-ay. Yi-pi-yi-o. The ghost riders in the sky.

70 We want you to make these songs yours, which means:

If they’re too hard to play, simplify them. If you hear different chords form the ones shown, add or change them. If the key is bad for you to sing in, or too hard to play in, transpose it to a key that works!

The chart below will allow you to change the chords in a song to a key that is either lower or higher than the one you found it in. Here’s how to us it...

1. Figure out what key the song is in now, usually the same as the final chord (G, Em, etc). We’ll use C as an example. 2. Choose the key you are changing to.. let’s say A 3. Find one of the original chords in your song in the C row.. how about C. 4. Go down to the A row and find the corresponding letter in the new key... A. In the C to A example, F would become D, G would become E, etc. 5. IMPORTANT- If the orginal chord has anything attached to it (7, m, maj7, sus, etc.) it becomes part of the new chord. So in the C to A example, an Am would become a F#m (the # is part of the note name... it doesn’t travel).

Transposing Chart KEY I II III IV V VI VII (bVII)

F F G A Bb C D E Eb C C D E F G A B Bb G G A B C D E F# F D D E F# G A B C# C A A B C# D E F# G# G E E F# G# A B C# D# D B B C# D# E F# G# A# A

TIP 1. The Roman Numerals at the top just number the notes (chords) in the scale. The chords you will use the most are the I, IV, and V. The VII Will hardly ever appear.

TIP 2. The weird-looking last column (bVII) will show up in lots of folk and pop songs. Don’t worry about them; just use them if you need to.

TIP 3. Some people might find the chromatic scale below helpful. If you’re not one of them, ignore it.

TIP 4. If you can’t make sense of this, take it to any music store, and ask. Someone there will be able to explain it to you. GOOD LUCK!!!

CHROMATIC SCALE: C, C#, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B, (C, C#, D...) (C, Db, D, Eb, F, Gb, G, Ab, A, Bb, B, C, Db, D...)

A very special thanks to those that helped to make this possible. I am no music theory genius or guitar virtuoso, but I believe that playing and singing music together is a crucial part of the camp experience. This book would not be possible without the already existing Cheley Colorado Camps chord book, the ultimate-guitar.com website, the input and assistance of Annie Garretson, and the willingness to play with me just about anytime from Mike Adler.
