Welcome to Miami. True, this Floridian oasis was once a swampland – a far cry from what reigns today as America’s sexiest city. This metro area grew from just 1,000 residents to nearly 5.5 million in the years 1896 to 2006. “The Magic City” experienced seemingly overnight growth, and today, the magic lives on. When flying into Miami, you have several options. Miami International Airport is the largest and right next to downtown, but the less-hectic Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) is just 25 miles north of the city. Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) is 75 miles north of the city, and it also offers Tri- Rail service to MIA.

Before or after any cruise, Miami is a can’t-miss stop, and PortMiami makes it easily accessible. Recognized globally as the “Cruise Capital of the World,” it’s an ultra-modern collection of terminals, and the world’s largest port of passengers. Given you’re in the heart of tourism, finding hotels that offer shuttles to and from the port is no problem.

PRIME TIME JANUARY – MAY It has snowed exactly once in Miami’s official meteorological history, in 1977. With its year-round tropical climate, Miami is an ideal winter destination. Summers are quieter (but also sweltering and run the risk of hurricane season). Take care to avoid city-wide events (when the city sees more visitors and higher rates). For lower rates and fewer crowds, travel in November.

For top-notch tours and tastings, get out of town and head to Homestead for a visit to Miami Brewing Company’s warehouse. This must-visit location sits on the same property as Schnebly Redland’s Winery. Taste ales aged in Jamaican rum barrels at Biscayne Bay Brewing Company in Doral. In Little Havana, combine baseball and beers at Nightlife Brewing Company just outside Marlins Park. Due South Brewing in Boynton Beach annually brews its Hopicana orange-rye IPA using Florida oranges. Star Wars fans can get their fill at J. Wakefield Brewing. Other favorites in the heart of Miami include Wynwood Brewing Company, Concrete Beach Brewery and The Abbey Brewing Company (Miami Beach’s oldest and only brewery).

TASTES LIKE MIAMI Don’t leave Miami without surrendering yourself to the cultural mashups on its menu. A cosmopolitan city with rich South American and Caribbean influences, you can taste it all in a few bucket-list favorites. Lauderdale Beach is great for people watching, and Matheson Hammock Park is known for its swaying palms and popular landscape. For postcard-perfect views, visit Crandon Park on Key Biscayne. One of the greatest park treasures in Miami, Crandon Park is famous for its crystal-clear and shallow waters. It’s a destination for everyone – featuring a lively boardwalk, beach volleyball and water sports, a nature center and a family amusement center. Despite it all, the beach itself is still the main attraction here. Consistently named among the top ten beaches in the nation, the beach features cabana rentals, soft sand and the calmest waters in town.

Biscayne National Park Within sight of the Miami skyline, this national park protects a rare combination of aquamarine waters, islands and coral reefs. It also houses evidence of 10,000 years of human history, from pirates and shipwrecks to pineapple farmers and presidents. Outdoors enthusiasts can boat, snorkel, camp, watch wildlife…or simply relax in a rocking chair gazing out over the bay. Many visitors never venture beyond the park’s northern waters, but you can also travel farther south (and below the surface) on a snorkeling or diving trip to discover Biscayne’s undersea treasures.

Canaveral National Seashore Canaveral National Seashore preserves Florida’s shoreline in the same state it has been for centuries. Spread across a barrier island east of Orlando, its gorgeous, 24-mile beach is the longest undeveloped stretch of sand in east Florida, and a key habitat for nesting sea turtles and bird species.

Dry Tortugas National Park Take the breathtaking scenic route to Key West, and hop on a catamaran 68 miles into the Gulf of Mexico. Dry Tortugas National Park encompasses an archipelago of small islands, a swath of blue ocean and, on one of the islands, the vast stone bulk of Fort Jefferson, the biggest masonry structure in the western hemisphere.

From high-end PGA golf to the casual round, Miami offers an array of golf courses for every taste and skill level. When your inner double eagle is calling, head to the links and tee off where legends have played. Many of Florida’s prestigious courses have played host to numerous PGA and LPGA championships.

PALM BEACH | THE BREAKERS Worth the trip north of Miami, this course is the envy of the golf world. The award-winning destination offers two 36-hole championship courses – the Ocean Course and The Breakers Rees Jones – as well as one of the country’s finest personalized golf instruction programs.

KEY BISCAYNE | CRANDON GOLF AT KEY BISCAYNE Just 10 minutes from downtown Miami, this public, 18-hole course is considered one of the most beautiful and difficult par-72 courses in the state of Florida. Enveloped in the tropics, this course goes for breathtaking. It features seven saltwater lakes, mangroves and lush tropical foliage.

KEEP FLORIDA WILD When we think of responsible tourism in Southern Florida, conservation should immediately come to mind. Florida’s natural resources are its greatest asset – from its coral reefs to its fresh water resources, everything is connected. Threats to Florida’s ecosystems stem from overdevelopment, nutrient pollution, invasive species and a rise in sea level. OBSERVING WILDLIFE Everglades National Forest The Everglades National Forest is recognized both nationally and internationally as one of the world’s most unique natural and cultural resources, and they are at the heart of the world’s largest intergovernmental watershed restoration efforts. Take an unexpected journey and visit the Everglades’ wild backwaters with trained field biologists and naturalist guides. Groups and individuals can enjoy a day of discovery and exploration in a wet hike through clear knee to waist-deep waters. This expedition provides an up-close and personal perspective on conservation as you wade through and learn about the ecosystems within cypress domes and a rugged, subtropical landscape.

HEALING WILDLIFE Pelican Harbor Seabird Station Since 1980, the Pelican Harbor Seabird Station has worked tirelessly to rescue, heal and perform emergency surgery on injured Florida seabirds. When possible, they are released back into the wild. The station offers heartwarming tours, in which visitors can meet the dedicated staff to learn how they perform work with imperiled species on a daily basis.

CONSERVING WILDLIFE Zoological Wildlife Foundation Zoological Wildlife Foundation is an organization dedicated to educating the public about rare and endangered animal species in captivity and in the wild. The Foundation offers wild, up-close and personal experiences with resident animals and tours of its multi-acre park. This guided tour offers a wildlife education experience, and includes hands-on interactions with reptiles, primates, small mammals and birds of prey.
