"John Day died." No, it couldn't be. Not John Day who worked out so regularly, who fussed at others about their health, who prided himself on his great physical condition. Not John. As the shock turned to tears, I realized what was playing on the sound system: "Spirit in the Sky." I'm going up to the spirit in the sky. That's where I'm gonna go when I die. When I die and they lay me to rest, I'm gonna go to the place that's the best. How appropriate. If anyone spent his life heading for heaven, it was John. "The Spirit in the Sky." Yeah, that's a song that John would sing, all right. I could hear his arrangement of it, with his sister Doris belting out the lead with all the fervor and excitement that a single human being could muster. Or, if Doris were not around, outrageous Dana Rogers would be up there. And maybe all the others who at one time or another were part of John Day & Com- pany would be together at one time. John would be playing the bejabbers out of the piano, and all the other per- formers would be singing and clapping. And the audience would be loving it.
