ould you rather be a 15- handicap golfer playing well or a scratch golfer giving all Wthe shots? In this article we discuss the tactics and strategy of this scenario. It goes like this. I take on my close friend Eddie Gall at the fabulous Tradition Golf Club in La Quinta. The course, which was designed by Arnold Palmer, is one of the best desert courses you will ever play. It’s always in perfect condition, with its colorful shrubs, wild flowers and babbling brooks all contained within a magnificent mountainside setting. Meanwhile, back to Eddie. He’s an absolute demon off his 15 handicap. In spite of approaching the age of 83—he must be one of the few octogenarians who can still make a 90-degree turn—he strides at a brisk pace down the fairways. You talk about a man who is in good shape for his age and you’re talking about Eddie. His secret? He walks everywhere and looks after himself. His game revolves around hitting the ball 200 yards straight down the center, and he has as good a short game as anyone in the club. In fact, his putting is exceptional. As for me, I am in my 60s and playing off scratch. I drive the ball well at around 270-280 yards, although my short game is not as good as it used to be. So, as they say, the game is on.

The Clubhouse at Tradition Golf Club

Eddie is one of the most entertaining people you could ever hope to play with. There’s always banter going on and everyone has a great time. However, playing against him is rather like crossing a cow field—you need to keep your wits about you! Let’s take the stroke-index 1 and stroke-index 2 holes; these are going to be my best chance on the 15 holes where I give him a shot. The attractive third hole at Tradition Golf Club is stroke-index 1, playing 400 yards off the member’s tee. Off the tee, I have the advantage because I can carry the large right-hand bunker, which has a 230-yard carry. This makes the fairway almost twice as wide.

SuMMer 2013 • DeSert Golf MaGazine 17 Course Design

Eddie knows that the greatest danger for him on No. 12 is going down the right and dicing with the right-hand bunker. He therefore chooses a more conservative line and hits towards the left-hand bunkers, which will make the hole play longer but is nevertheless a good decision. For his second shot, Eddie hits a 3-wood. There’s added pressure as he knows he must make good contact with this straight-faced club to carry the well-placed baranca, which crosses the fairway and is one of the features of this hole.

Clive (yellow), Eddie (red)

We move one tee forward to Eddie’s tee, and he sees the hole from a very different perspective. The hole now plays 375 yards; however, Eddie can’t carry the right-hand bunker so he needs to hit straight to a much narrower fairway, which of course he does. But he is now confronted with another problem: There is a very deep hollow masking much of the front of the green. Even with a well-struck 3-wood, Eddie would have difficulty carrying it. Instead, he plays short and to the right of the green. Meanwhile, much farther down the fairway, I have 135 yards to the pin—a 9- iron for me. The deep hollow is not going to affect me and I hit a really solid iron to 2 feet. Looking good! Aaah but remember we talked about Eddie’s short game? He pitches it to 6 feet, no problem at all, and holes his putt. It’s a stroke hole for him, resulting in a net 3. And there I thought I was on to a winner, but just scraped in with a half! Mmmm, Eddie is grinning, perhaps even cackling. The 12th hole, a 440-yard strategic dogleg right, is stroke-index 2. Again, Eddie and I see the tee shots from very different perspectives. There is a massive white-sand bunker down the right that seems to go on forever. But with a solid hit off the tee, I know I can just carry the third bay of the bunker, thus cutting the corner and substantially shortening the hole. I hit an exceptionally Clive (yellow), Eddie (red) good drive, somewhere close to 300 yards.

match at The Hideaway, I hit the ball flawlessly and shot 65. Believe it or not, my partner, Kelly Sims, shot 72 gross off his 10-handicap that day. Unbelievably, we lost to Eddie and his partner by one hole. The final result of our match at Tradition was that I was round in 68 and lost to Eddie 1 down. My partner, Tom Gloy, a 4 handicap, and I also lost 1 down to Eddie and his partner, David DellaPenta, president of the club who plays off a 2 handicap.

Eddie Gall showing his putting skills again!

My next shot is a very solid 9-iron from 140 yards out that stops within 10 feet of the pin. Eddie is left with a 50-yard pitch for his third shot, which is right in his ballpark. He plays to 9 feet. David DellaPenta, Tom Gloy, Eddie Gall and Clive Clark And then I just miss the birdie putt. Do you think Eddie gives me a break? Not a bit of it. He’s an The lesson? Many of the greats from the world of golf paid tribute as soon as they heard of Venturi’s passing, including Arnold Palmer, and Sean McManus, chairman of CBS Sports. Conference. The team’s longstanding tradition of achievement continued this spring as the Roadrunners tallied 14 top- ten finishes in 14 tournament appearances. In fact, 10 of those top-tens were victories. Although COD fell short of its preseason goal of capturing the state championship, the team showed its true potential through consistency and low scores. And, as luck would have it, most of the team’s top performers, including 2013 MVP and seasonal scoring average leader Casey Sullivan, will be returning next year. “Looking ahead to next spring, a majority of my players will come from this year’s freshman team, including each of my top four scorers,” Manzoni says. “And I’ll also be recruiting some local and out-of- state high-school graduates.” Last year’s squad included 17 members, 12 of whom played on a regular basis. Each of the top 12 scorers has maintained a 4 handicap or lower. But individual skills are only part of the picture. “To play on my team, each member must be a team player. We win as a team and we lose as a team,” Manzoni says. “Camaraderie and chemistry are the foundations of a winning team. Without them, teams will not be successful, regardless of how much talent the members have.” With these foundations firmly in place, the coach believes his team has the ability to capture a seventh state championship next spring. “If the players work hard this off-season, play intellectually rather than emotionally and focuses on team chemistry, they will contend for the state title,” he says. Such cool confines are highlighted by the Jay Morrish-designed championship golf course recognized by Golf Digest as the 7th-ranked course in golf-rich Arizona. “There’s no question it’s a challenging course, but I’d also say it’s very fair,” Anderson says. “It’s not ‘tweaked-up,’ so to speak, just for the sake of making it tough. It’s interesting because it’s a unique blend of length and altitude, and each hole presents its own set of challenges.” While ball flight is increased thanks to the 7,000 feet of elevation, putting surfaces require ample grounding for a player to score. “It’s a shot-makers golf course,” Anderson continues. “I think it’s fairly forgiving off the tee, yet I’d rate the greens from fairly difficult to very difficult at times. The green sizes feel generous and the surfaces are incredibly manicured, but there’s a lot of undulation so you really need to study the breaks.” After experiencing the mesh of forced carries, rolling elevation and winding water features, players arrive at the

While the ride is part of the experience, some purists might be unhappy with the prospect of cart-only golf and the need for extended cart rides from one hole to the next. SuMMer 2013 • DeSert Golf MaGazine 33 The latest on golf gear and other products you simply must have By Mike Conrad

Let’s face it; golfing in the Desert can be HOT! So why head out to play in Las Vegas or Scottsdale come July? First, the heat doesn’t bother me. Second, I go prepared to stay cool! As a “Gadget Guy” I am often asked what I pack to keep cool, and this summer edition of Desert Golf Magazine is the perfect time to share my secrets. Some of these items I keep in my golf bag, some are waiting when I get home.

Chill Skinz The Chill Skinz is a towel designed to keep you cool. Not only is it great for golfers, runners, tennis players and any other summer athlete, it is also great for any hot day. Simply wet the Chill Skinz with cold water, squeeze out the excess water before you leave and slip it in your bag. When needed, take the Chill Skinz out, shake to activate the towel and apply it to the back of your neck (or other heated areas). When activated, the towel drops to about 20 degrees cooler than the outside temperature. Check it out online at chillskinz.com

Cool Off Another cool product is Cool Off . You can easily store this handy little wipe in your golf bag, backpack or purse. Its 17 natural herbs help keep the cool feeling going after the initial application. Whenever you need a quick chill, simply open the Cool Off pack wipe and feel the relief. You’ll be amazed at the coolness this tiny package provides, and the handy size means you can easily fit several of these in your pocket to last the entire day. For more information on Cool Off, log on to thequickchill.com

Urburn Sunburn If you do happen to get burned, you should check out Unburn Sunburn relief. Heck, that’s just fun to say. Take it from a true Irishman, I know what works on a sunburn. Unburn is formulated with 2.5 percent lidocaine to provide fast pain relief (remember the TV show Emergency? Those guys prescribed lidocaine for almost everything!). Brush on Block Being Irish, I can get a sunburn under a 100-watt light bulb. I could probably use SPF 1,000,000 and still get a burn. We all know we should use sunblock, and we typically spray on gobs and gobs before heading outside in the morning. The key, however, is what you do later in the day. I found a product called Brush on Block . This isn’t your normal sunscreen. As a matter of fact, it looks more like a make-up brush than sunblock and its design is one key to its success. Think about the times you’ve had sunscreen in your eye, and how much it stings and burns. With Brush on Block, you brush it on as if you are applying make-up (guys, just accept this as fact). With the easy-apply brush, you avoid getting sunblock in your eyes, and the sunblock doesn’t run when you sweat. Since it is made with minerals, you hardly know you’re wearing sunscreen. Not only is this perfect for around your face and neck, it’s also a bonus for guys like me with thinning hair— it easily covers that bald spot! Women can keep Brush on Block in their handbag, men can slide it in their satchel (Indiana Jones has one) and keep one in their golf bag as well. That makes it easy to continue applying it throughout the day as necessary. For all of the SPF facts and mineral information, go to brushonblock.com

Margaritaville Cordless Frozen Concoction Maker When it comes to frozen drinks, I’m a loser. The blender never seems to chop the ice right or the beverage- to-ice ratio is off. Fortunately, the brainiacs at Margaritaville have made me a better bartender with the ultimate Margaritaville Cordless Frozen Concoction Maker . While I initially hesitated to call it a frozen concoction maker (a moniker relating to Jimmy Buffet’s famed song around which his chain of restaurants and associated products have been built), there is no way I can call it a mere blender. First, it runs off a heavy-duty 18-volt NiCd battery, so it shaves ice and perfectly blends ingredients to create up to 60 restaurant-quality frozen drinks on a single charge. Its rugged, portable design makes it easy to take poolside, out on a boat, tailgating or anywhere else you can think of. Here’s how easy it is to make your favorite frozen beverage: First, place the ice in the top ice holder; next, mix your favorite beverage in the shatterproof pitcher; finally, select for one, two or three glasses and hit the button. The Margaritaville Cordless Frozen Concoction Maker does all the work for you. It’s powerful, easy to use and so far I have yet to outdrink the battery! This is a gadget that I have been personally testing every weekend this summer—and it’s paradise unplugged! To get your own for your next 19th-hole celebration, visit margaritavillecargo.com

Finally, I want to point out that, although cool, none of these products are a replacement for good hydration. It’s especially important during the summer that you drink plenty of water throughout the day. Then, keep the above products on hand to protect you from the sun, cool you in soaring temperatures or relax you at day’s end. Ahhhh, summer.

The latest in real estate development across California, Arizona and Nevada realty By Jenell Fontes

Stone Eagle the Good life

Home prices continue to rise, money is cheap and accessible, inventory is beyond low and in many communities we are still selling under building costs. Which begs the question: Is this a bubble or true strides to a housing- market recovery? Trulia economist Jed Kolko says that when we compare what traditionally drives home prices, such as rents and incomes, the overall housing market is still undervalued by about 7 percent. This, of course, is a big improvement from the bottom of the downturn in late 2011 when prices were undervalued by 15 percent. However, Kolko notes, prices are far from the peak of the housing bubble in 2006 when homes were overvalued by 39 percent. Right now, sellers are in the driver’s seat; many properties that are priced well are actually selling with multiple offers and above list price. As a realtor, it is very hard to ask buyers to put in offers above list price, yet that is what it might take to make the deal. Because the overall real estate market has jumped so quickly, some properties are still based on the comps of three months ago and those are the ones that are now the “deals.” The bank-owned “shadow inventory” still has not showed up to the party, and I believe we will see more of this trickle effect. Many short sales are no longer as short due to the rise in overall pricing, and banks are continuing to improve the loan-modification process and approve more loans to keep homeowners in their homes. CoreLogic recently reported that, “U.S. home prices jumped almost 11 percent in March from a year earlier, the biggest gain since the height of the real estate boom in 2006.” But values are rising faster than incomes, an indication that prices may fall in some cities once higher mortgage rates erode affordability. The hardest hit markets are now the fastest in escalation mode. Much of this is because homes were so undervalued. And even with 22-percent increase over last year, we are still under building costs in many areas. It is a very important to distinguish the numbers of an 11-percent overall increase, keeping in mind that this is a general number only and the recovery is geography- and price-sensitive. For example, areas that were hardest hit may see a 20-27 percent increase over last year in the lower end of the inventory, yet the high end may continue to see little movement or recovery in pricing. That said, for some buyers, this is a good time to be looking, and these desert communities have had some nice homes to consider.

CALIFORNIA STONE EAGLE A prestigious guard-gated community in Palm Desert, Calif., Stone Eagle is a hidden paradise. One key feature is that the homes and golf course are separate, which adds to the peaceful feeling for both residents and golfers. The Tom Doak-designed course at private Stone Eagle Golf Club, located high above the Coachella Valley floor, is known as one of the most aesthetically pleasing courses in the area. It has an unusual layout in a shallow bowl surrounded by low, rugged mountains and thousands of acres of protected land. There is some water but no trees, the greens are well bunkered and the fairways are wide. This course even has a par-3 19th hole next to the Aerie grill. Membership to Stone Eagle and its
