! ! ! Learn about the Weekend Backpack Program!

For the second year, Warren Community School will be part of a program to supply extra weekend food for school children. Weekday breakfasts and lunches at school are already helping families stretch their food budgets to provide the good food their children need to grow and learn. This “Weekend Backpack Program” hopes to extend that help to Saturday and Sunday. ! ! ! ! Food bags will be slipped into children’s backpacks during Friday lunch, when classrooms are empty. ! ! This gift is given privately. ! ! Who is eligible to! get a backpack? ! ! Any child whose parent or guardian signs a permission! form.! ! ! Whether every child whose parent or guardian! sends in permission will get weekend food will depend on! how much food the program! has available.! ! If at first not everyone who wants it can be given! backpack food, the school principal, nurse, and cafeteria director! will decide who is included and! who will go on a !wait-list.!

If you would like a permission slip, you can either call the school office to have one sent home or you can send a note in with your child asking for one. Parents, Teachers & Friends of Warren Community School WCS ‘Wild’ Read-A-Thon 2016

The Principal’s Pen

October 21, 2016

Dear Parents/Guardians of WCS Students:

Two-thirds of October have already whizzed by; the weather is still trying to say “summer can’t be over yet”, while the trees are a riot of color, kids are immersed in their learning, and activities for all are already crowding the calendar. It has been wonderful to see so many parents in and around school, participating as chaperones, classroom readers, and general supporters of their children’s school experiences. Your participation in school- and PTF-sponsored opportunities, including both fundraising and fun learning activities, is part of all that is positive at WCS!!

This time of year always raises questions about the coming weeks, questions often concerning upcoming holidays and celebration. Today seemed like a good day to give everyone an overview of related school guidelines.

In the course of our school’s effort to educate students about the many cultures in our communities, teachers often provide learning experiences about traditions and celebrations around the world, recognizing the many varying beliefs held by our families. The school does not celebrate these holidays per se, as increasingly our families have diverse expectations about how such recognition/celebration is carried out and those decisions are appropriately left to families and their own traditions.

Our wonderful PTF (Parents, Teacher, and Friends of Warren Community School) is presently organizing a “Trunk or Treat” celebration for WCS families who are interested in gathering for Halloween celebration, sharing some costumed and tasty fun. Advertised in previous newsletters, we have a good list of trunk sponsors already; there is limited space for more, so if you would be interested, please sign up in the lobby or let us know in the office. This year’s event will be held in the WCS parking lot on the Saturday prior to Halloween (October 29) between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. As students move from trunk to trunk, a virtual “parade” of costumed kiddos will develop through the parking lot. All families interested in Halloween celebration are invited to attend. This event replaces parades previously held during the school day and costumes being worn to school.

This is a reminder as well that parents wishing to donate food items to classroom events, at any time of year, need to contact their child’s teacher to be certain that classroom allergies and our goal of healthy snacks are considered in the planning. Increasingly, parents are expressing concerns over sugary treats and are looking for healthy alternatives; WCS is supportive of such wellness considerations and asks that parents and teachers work together to support safe and healthy options at classroom events throughout the year.

Looking forward to seeing you throughout the coming Fall season, as we share all the learning activities in which your children are engaged!!
