Min Hye-sung & Gyun Eun-kyung: Pansori – Sugyeong-nangja-Ga (Le Dit De Demoiselle Sugyeong) BUDA 7737161 / € 11,05 / 0602577371615 / label: Buda Musique / format: CD / Korea – Traditional Pansori is a traditional Korean art in which an actor speaks, acts and above all sings a lengthy tale following complex rhythms, accompanied only by a single drummer, with only a mat and a screen for decor, and a fan as the only accessory. While today only five “classical” (that is, from before the 20th century) pansoris remain, it is known that at least twelve pansoris existed in the past. This sixth pansori, of which only the second half of the work remained, was entirely reconstituted by relying on ancient novelistic versions, and transmitted to Min Hye-Sung, who today is its sole depositary. The recording of this piece is a world premiere.

Capullo De Jerez: Mi Musica SATKCD 264 / € 11,45 / 8435307608512 / label: Satelite K / format: CD / Spain – Flamenco Twelve years have passed since his last album, 'Flor y canela' (2007), and thirty since his first album, 'Poderio', released in 1989. 2019 is a very important event for Capullo De Jerez, as it is the 50th anniversary of his artistic debut. 'Mi Musica' is a flamenco album with nine tracks, six of them composed entirely by Miguel, based on bulerías, tangos, rumbas, fandangos and bulerías por solea. In addition to the traditional palms and flamenco guitars, the album contains a fresh air of modernity, through the occasional inclusion of trumpets, piano, drums and bass. All this without ever losing sight of Calle Cantarería in the Santiago neighbourhood, where Miguel's idol, Camarón de la Isla, used to go regularly. Precisely to him are dedicated bulerías that have the luxury collaboration of Alejandro Sanz.

Kairos Collective: Europe TOUM 3 / € 9,45 / 8714835130574 / label: Toumilou Records / format: CD / Greece – Traditional Fully aware of the fact that he still have vast areas to explore, Michiel van der Meulen wrote some compositions in classical Ottoman forms, and on his album Piri Reis (TOUM 1) features six of them. With this album 'Europe' he revisit the type of repertoire he started out with, but now armed with what he has learned from Ross Daly about modality, and also with a completely different view on harmony and accompaniment. Daly defined the genre of Contemporary Modal Music, which in its turn greatly helped to define an own relationship with the modal traditions. This album was recorded live in about three days: everybody played together (except the rek in track 11, which was overdubbed) in the same room (except the pandeiro in tracks 5 and 9 and the voice in track 3, which were recorded in a separate booth for technical reasons). Recording in this way reduces the editing possibilities but brings a feeling and liveliness that is irreplaceable. Album teaser.

Anna Einarsson Ensemble: Life In Pieces AEM 6 / € 9,95 / 7320470239018 / label: Anne Einarsson Music / format: CD / Sweden – Jazz The singer, multi-instrumentalist and composer Anna Einarsson never choose the predictable for her creativity and doesn’ let herself be constrained by genres. On her three CDs with the group Anagram ('Anagram' AEM 1, 'Archipelago' AEM 2 and 'Reveries' AEM 3) she has moved between wayward jazz, sophisticated art music and multi- layered electronics. Meetings between different art forms and means of communicating have been a key guiding principle for her for many years. The lyrics deal with recollections and everyday stories from mid-life. The music is lyrical and melodic, experimental yet inviting, guiding the listener onwards. It is a world to dwell into. Listen to atrack.

Elhzo: Yeuk Yeuk FF 116 / € 9,95 / 0793596547942 / label: Studio SoundLab / format: CD / Senegal – Jazz Elhzo is the name of the solo project from Demba Seye Gueye , Senegalese jazz drummer and multi- instrumentalist, presents Yeuk Yeuk, his debut album where he implements both his rhythmic mastery and compositional versatility. Yeuk Yeuk is embellished with Jazz and Afro-Jazz hints, grooves hailed from Funk, all of it tied together by Elhzo’s singing, which ranges from the use of Wolof to French, interlacing elements of the Senegalese Griot culture with the best European Jazz culture. This album sketches a context of constant dialogue and collaboration between the African and European music world, which tells about both the pride for the own roots and openness to multicultralism. Definitely an actual and modern work about the current socio-cultural scene we live in. Listen.

Pulo NDJ: Desert To Douala WONDRCD 37 / € 12,95 / 0708630007795 / label: Wonderwheel Recordings / format: CD / Chad – Popular An exploration of traditional Chadian music with an electronic twist... Chad is in many ways a blind spot on the map of today's global musical conversation. Overlooked, misunderstood and misrepresented, outside observers rarely concede the country an autonomous voice over its past, present and future. N’Djamena, the dusty capital of Chad with its well-kept stories of boundary-breaking musical collaborations and thirst for experimentation is a city that reflects the country's diversity. In May 2018, Nickodemus accepted an invitation from Hape Collective to travel to N'Djamena to teach a group of young adults DJ'ing and electronic music production, which resulted in the encounter between a group of talented artists from Cameroon, Chad, Congo and Togo. The project found its inspiration in the city's un-narrated diversity and seeks to explore the possibilities offered by technology to demonstrate how the country’s rich heritage connects with existing musical conversations. It strives to create bridges in a world of walls. Listen to a track.

The Busy Twist: London Luanda Remix Series (Out on Friday June 14th, 2019) GCEP / 14,45 / 0715235772898 / label: Galletas Calientes / format: 12” / England – African Remix From St Lucia to Jamaica to Ghana to Colombia, London born duo The Busy Twist have travelled the globe to create their dance floor killing productions. The London Luanda Remix Series is the result of digging into 1970's popular music in Angola. Acclaimed by BBC radio host Annie Mac, and supported by the likes of Jillionaire, Buraka Som Sistema or Toddla T, some of these remixes are already being played throughout clubs and parties all over the world, but were never officially released. The release of these classic tribal reworks was eventually made possible thanks to the group’s recent trips to Colombia, where they worked alongside Systema Solar, Ghetto Kumbé, Nidia Gongora and Palenque Records, for an impressive variety of original productions, collaborations and remixes. Listen here.

Park Jiha: Philos (Out on Friday June 14th, 2019) GBCD 77 / € 10,45 / 4030433607725 / label: tak:til – Glitterbeat / format: CD / Korea – Avantgarde GBLP 77 / € 13,45 / 4030433607718 / label: tak:til – Glitterbeat / format: LP / Korea – Avantgarde Park Jiha’s new album 'Philos' is both an extension of, and a swerve away from, her previous record. It shares its predecessor’s patience and deeply resonant hypnotic effects. It similarly looks to the future, while continuing to converse with a rich instrumental language from the past. But the overall tone and intent feels much more interior and personal - more rarefied. This evolution was purposeful and integrated into the way the album was composed and recorded. Whereas 'Communion' featured the classic soundfield of a group of musicians playing in a room, “Philos” trades that for more density and concentration. Each sound has been given the artist’s full attention. Fashioned, blended and layered in the way that she hears it. Nothing surrendered to interpretation. Listen to a track.

75 Dollar Bill: I Was Real (Out on Friday June 28th, 2019) GBCD 74 / € 10,45 / 4030433607428 / label: tak:til – Glitterbeat / format: CD / USA – Instrumental GBLP 74 / € 13,45 / 4030433607411 / label: tak:til – Glitterbeat / format: LP / USA – Instrumental Instrumentation expanded, palette widened and canvas doubled. The third album from these acclaimed NYC mainstays adds concise rockers, fuller orchestrations and mysterious textures to the band's long, deep grooves and microtonal tunings. Having emerged as a vibrant musical force with their previous album 'Wood/Metal/Plastic/Pattern/Rhythm/Rock' (GBCD 47 / GBLP 47), 75 Dollar Bill have spent the last few years bringing their music to new places and people with their dedication to performance in venues of all shapes and sizes. The fruits of this work can be heard here on their expansive new album ‘I Was Real’. The record is enhanced by the presence of eight additional players in various combinations over its nine tracks - but also shows off the duo's strength when stripped down to the core. Listen to a track.
