Social Media Alternatives – Spring 2021 Social Media Alternatives – Spring 2021 United States Constitution, First Amendment Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. ~~~~ Sick of Communist-Like Censorship? – Here’s A List of Popular Uncensored Media Options By Patty McMurray – Published January 11, 2021 at 3:11pm “With the current media purge of conservative, libertarian, independent, and non-establishment voices in high gear, we thought it would be beneficial to list some of the alternatives to each globalist media platform. This does not constitute official endorsements and this list is by no means exhaustive. So please do check back to this article for additional sources from time to time. “The great news is, there are many amazing options to stay connected to each other and to the news. They aren’t all as evolved as the multi-billion dollar corporations you are used to, but most are competent technically and already have many users. Also, you may find that some of the platforms provide better functionality than the legacy media you are leaving. “We believe this list is a good start to get the message out as rational free-thinking Americans on all sides of the aisle sever their ties to authoritarian anti-speech platforms.” And this just in from Wikipedia, 01/13/2021… Wikipedia is now publishing slanderous descriptions of Parler and basically every other new or alternative social networking platform, especially those that are popular with individuals, groups, and organizations that question the veracity of the 2020 Presidential election. Virtually verbatim slander as shown here is being used to describe MeWe, Signal, and BitChute. Not that Wikipedia was every truly a reliable source of information, now we know for certain that we must question everything they publish. Dorsey and Zuckerberg: As Attorneys General committed to protecting the safety and well-being of the residents of our states, we write to express our concern about the use of your platforms to spread fraudulent information about coronavirus vaccines and to seek your cooperation in curtailing the dissemination of such information. The people and groups spreading falsehoods and misleading Americans about the safety of coronavirus vaccines are threatening the health of our communities, slowing progress in getting our residents protected from the virus, and undermining economic recovery in our states. As safe and effective vaccines become available, the end of this pandemic is in sight. This end, however, depends on the widespread acceptance of these vaccines as safe and effective. Unfortunately, misinformation disseminated via your platforms has increased vaccine hesitancy, which will slow economic recovery and, more importantly, ultimately cause even more unnecessary deaths. A small group of individuals use your platforms to downplay the dangers of COVID-19 and spread misinformation about the safety of vaccines. These individuals lack medical expertise and are often motivated by financial interests. According to a recent report by the Center for Countering Digital Hate1, so-called “anti-vaxxer” accounts on Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter reach more than 59 million followers.

Immediately after the start of the event, posts related to the riots started to trend on social media. A social media platform which stood out was a free speech endorsing social media platform Parler; it is being claimed as the platform on which the riots were planned and talked about. Our report presents a contrast between the trending content on Parler and Twitter around the time of riots. We collected data from both platforms based on the trending hashtags and draw comparisons based on what are the topics being talked about, who are the people active on the platforms and how organic is the content generated on the two platforms. While the content trending on Twitter had strong resentments towards the event and called for action against rioters and inciters, Parler content had a strong conservative narrative echoing the ideas of voter fraud similar to the attacking mob. We also find a disproportionately high manipulation of traffic on Parler when compared to Twitter. Additional Key Words and Phrases: Social Computing, Data Mining, Social Media Analysis, Capitol Riots, Parler, Twitter 1 INTRODUCTION Misinformation of the United States of America’s presidential election results being fraudulent has been spreading across the world since the elections in November 2020.1 Public protests and legal cases were taking place across the states against the allegation of voter fraud and manhandling of mail-in ballots.2 This movement took a violent height when a mob attacked the Capitol Hill building to stop certification of Mr.

Coronavirus News and Information on YouTube: A Content Analysis of Popular Search Terms Online Supplement Nahema Marchal, Hubert Au, Philip N. Howard Data and Method In this memo, we investigate the type of information users come across when searching for information about the coronavirus on YouTube. We first collected a list of the 10 most frequent YouTube search terms related to the “coronavirus” UK over the last 90 days, using Google Trends on March 10th, 2020. For comparison, we also collected the auto-complete YouTube search suggestions for the term “coronavirus”, using a Google Chrome browser in Incognito Mode. Table 1. • Covid-19 Disinformation Briefing No. 2 Far-Right Mobilisation
COVID-19 DISINFORMATION BRIEFING NO. 2 FAR-RIGHT MOBILISATION 9th April 2020 This is the second in a series of briefings from ISD’s Digital Research Unit on the information ecosystem around coronavirus (COVID-19). These briefings expose how technology platforms are being used to promote disinformation, hate, extremism and authoritarianism in the context of COVID-19. It is based on ISD’s mixture of natural language processing, network analysis and ethnographic online research. This briefing focuses on the way far-right groups and individuals are mobilising around COVID-19 in the US. The first briefing in the series can be found on ISD’s website. Top Lines Far-right groups and individuals are opportunistically using the ongoing pandemic to advance their movements and ideologies: - COVID-19 is an increasingly important topic within far-right communities. Mentions of ‘corona-chan’, a slang term for COVID-19 popular with far-right groups and individuals have increased significantly across mainstream and fringe social media platforms. - COVID-19 is being used as a ‘wedge issue’ to promote conspiracy theories, target minority communities, and call for extreme violence. COVID-19 is being used to advance calls for the ‘boogaloo’ – an extreme right-wing meme referring to an impending civil war: - While some of these calls appear to be ironic, others should be recognised as legitimate security threats. - Discussions of the ‘boogaloo’ are increasingly pivoting towards the ways the COVID- 19 pandemic provides an opportunity for violence. - This conversation is taking place across mainstream and fringe social media. - This trend has already manifested into real-world violence, with one alleged white supremacist terrorist dying after shootouts with the FBI.

Testimony of Lecia Brooks Chief of Staff, Southern Poverty Law Center before the Subcommittee on National Security, International Development and Monetary Policy Committee on Financial Services United States House of Representatives Dollars against Democracy: Domestic Terrorist Financing in the Aftermath of Insurrection February 25, 2021 My name is Lecia Brooks. I am chief of staff of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). Now in our 50th year, the SPLC is a catalyst for racial justice in the South and beyond, working in partnership with communities to dismantle white supremacy, strengthen intersectional movements, and advance the human rights of all people. SPLC lawyers have worked to shut down some of the nation’s most violent white supremacist groups by winning crushing, multimillion-dollar jury verdicts on behalf of their victims. We have helped dismantle vestiges of Jim Crow, reformed juvenile justice practices, shattered barriers to equality for women, children, the LGBTQ+ community, and the disabled, and worked to protect low-wage immigrant workers from exploitation. The SPLC began tracking white supremacist activity in the 1980s, during a resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan and other organized extremist hate groups. Today, the SPLC is the premier U.S. nonprofit organization monitoring the activities of domestic hate groups and other extremists. In the early 1990s, the SPLC launched its pioneering Teaching Tolerance program to provide educators with free, anti-bias classroom resources, such as classroom documentaries and lesson plans. Now renamed Learning For Justice, our program reaches millions of schoolchildren with award-winning curricula and other materials that promote understanding of our nation’s history and respect for others, helping educators create inclusive, equitable school environments.

Clockwise from top left: Linbury Theatre, Royal Opera House; The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare Theater; Hudson Theatre, Broadway; Studio Theatre, Bristol Old Vic. MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF ISPA Dear Friends, ransitions. We all think about them. Some of us worry about them. But we are all impacted by them. As much as we may try to be present each moment of our days, it is the rare person who does not ponder what comes next. Transitions can be as exhilarating as they are scary. In these times of rapid-fire change and volatility (mostly beyond our personal control), it is Teasy to default to a position of wanting to hang on to what we know. Stay the course. Be steady. Reduce risk. WELCOME Yet continuing to do the same thing that works for us today may be the very act that fails us tomorrow. Our Congress Co-chairs Collette Brennan and Steinunn Ragnarsdóttir have given us a brilliantly provocative theme to consider with an array of thought-leaders from within our field and beyond offering varied perspectives on how we might navigate the inevitability of the transitions we encounter. For me, transitions is a particularly apt theme as I prepare to pass on the chairmanship of ISPA to our colleague Tisa Ho. As an ISPA member for 20 years and board member for most of that time, I have been fortunate to work with so many gifted members who have given selflessly in leading ISPA through incredible Transitions.

  • Public Poll Findings and Methodology
PUBLIC POLL FINDINGS AND METHODOLOGY Misinformation around U.S. Capitol unrest, election spreading among Americans New Ipsos poll shows Capitol rioters viewed as “criminals,” “right-wing terrorists,” but views divided sharply along partisan lines Topline Findings Washington, DC, January 19, 2021 – In the wake of the January 6th storming of the U.S. Capitol, Ipsos took another look at beliefs toward misinformation and election-related conspiracy theories. There is over a 60-point gap between Democrats and Republicans regarding whether Joe Biden legitimately won the 2020 presidential election, a sign of how politically divided this country is, and what facts we are willing to accept. Following the attack last week, most Americans see the people who entered the Capitol as criminals or right-wing domestic terrorists and, as a result, support the suspension of the president’s social media accounts. Detailed Findings 1. Most of the American public views the people who entered the Capitol as criminals or right-wing domestic terrorists. A plurality support social media outlets removing President Trump and QAnon accounts as a result of the event. • Nearly one in three (31%) say they are criminals, and 26% say they are right-wing terrorists. • Just four percent believe they are patriots who were fighting to preserve our freedoms. • News consumption plays a role in views of the events, as does partisanship. • For example, one in four who get their news from FOX or conservative online outlets believe they were left-wing terrorists or Antifa, compared to just 7% of CNN or MSNBC viewers. Forty-five percent of Democrats see these people as right-wing domestic terrorists, while 10% of Republicans feel the same.
