The Dart "All the news that is fitting and to the point." Volume XII, Issue III Spring 2013 a memorable hit at Belmont Hill. The team suffered a heart breaking loss at Roxbury Latin when they went up twice with a few big innings but couldn’t save their lead in the field. All in all, it was a tough season for this group of guys, but they are putting these few losses in the rear view mirror and looking forward to bringing home the win they were searching for this past Fourth Baseball season. by Jake Milbury and Brian Craven Fourth Baseball had a very rough season, to say the least. We had a squad that was determined to bring home a W but never could. Tim DiFiore’s strong pitching led the way for most of the season, but he needed some support in the field. MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017 BLACKMON WORKING TOWARD HISTORIC SEASON On Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Coors Field, Colorado Rockies All-Star outfi elder Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and his 24th home run of the season. With the round-tripper, Blackmon recorded his 57th extra-base hit on the season, which include 20 doubles, 13 triples and his aforementioned 24 home runs. Pacing the Majors in triples, Blackmon trails only his teammate, All-Star Nolan Arenado for the most extra-base hits (60) in the Majors. Blackmon is looking to become the fi rst Major League player to log at least 20 doubles, 20 triples and 20 home runs in a single season since Curtis Granderson (38-23-23) and Jimmy Rollins (38-20-30) both accomplished the feat during the 2007 season. Since 1901, there have only been seven 20-20-20 players, including Granderson, Rollins, Hall of Famers George Brett (1979) and Willie Mays (1957), Jeff Heath (1941), Hall of Famer Jim Bottomley (1928) and Frank Schulte, who did so during his MVP-winning 1911 season. Charlie would become the fi rst Rockies player in franchise history to post such a season. If the season were to end today, Blackmon’s extra-base hit line (20-13-24) has only been replicated by 34 diff erent players in MLB history with Rollins’ 2007 season being the most recent. It is the fi rst stat line of its kind in Rockies franchise history. Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is the only player in history to post such a line in four seasons (1927-28, 30-31).

  • Delay Is Not Denial
Delay is Not Denial When I was with the Colorado Rockies, I had the pleasure of working with Clint Hurdle, a Major League manager and one of the best in the game today. Almost everyone who knows Clint agrees he’s an even better person than merely a great baseball manager. Clint could be tough and stern when needed, but he always showed compassion toward others. When we worked together, we had to send players down from the Major League squad to the AAA team at the end of Spring Training, as they were not going to make the 25-man roster. This makes the last week of Spring Training a stressful time for players and staff. The majority of veteran players feel confident they’ve made the team, but the others sit squarely on the “bubble,” knowing their fate could go either way. When a player was deemed headed to AAA, one of the coaches would send him to Clint’s office. There, we’d break the unfortunate news gingerly, knowing the player’s feelings were already hurt. No need to throw salt in the wound by being too negative. Clint would handle the situation as well as I have ever seen. He got the departing player to understand he was an important part of our club that season and could eventually rejoin the team at the Major League level. If that return was likely sooner than later, Clint used a particular statement that struck me as perfect for the situation. He’d say, “Delay is not denial.” It’s so true.

MLB.COM Reds sign free agents Parra, Olivo Reliever could bolster lefty presence in ‘pen; catcher brings depth to camp February 1, 2013, 9:57 PM ET By Mark Sheldon CINCINNATI -- The Reds on Friday added some depth to their bullpen and behind the plate by signing two free agents. Lefty Manny Parra was signed to a one-year contract worth a reported $1 million, with a chance to earn an additional $400,000 in appearance bonuses. Earlier in the day, the club signed catcher Miguel Olivo to a Minor League contract with an invite to big league Spring Training as a non-roster player. To make room for Parra on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Todd Redmond was designated for assignment. Parra, 30, spent his entire pro career in the Brewers organization, including five seasons in the Majors. He was thrilled to be joining a former National League Central rival. "I was excited, especially when I heard they were interested," Parra told MLB.com. "I'm excited to have an opportunity with a team that's doing so well. I always had a ton of respect when playing against them and now I am looking forward to playing for them." Originally a prized young starting pitcher who once threw a perfect game in Triple-A, Parra didn't develop into the ace Milwaukee hoped for. He was to be moved to the bullpen in 2011 but missed the entire season with a sprained elbow ligament and back issues. In 2012, Parra was 2-3 with a 5.06 ERA in a career-high 62 appearances while earning $1.2 million.
