Society Rock was in his pomp, gave him extra appeal. He also POSTHUMOUS HONOUR raced successfully beyond his 3-year-old season, as all stallions should. FOR SOCIETY ROCK Society Rock's haul of ,826,138 in progeny earnings puts him well clear of his runner-up Dabirsim (Fr), who is thus the leading active freshman in Europe and is something of a rarity in his prominent position in this table having started his stud career in Germany. I'm still a little traumatised at having been driven halfway across continental Europe by William Huntingdon and Liam Norris to see Dabirsim in his former home at Gestut Karlshof and not being allowed to stop for dinner until we returned to France (circa 11pm) owing to William's dislike of German food. That is now all but forgotten, if not forgiven, following the son of Hat Trick (Jpn)'s rather tasty start to his second career. An outstanding juvenile in his year, Dabirsim is now a little more accessible to breeders outside Germany, having moved to Normandy's Haras de Grandcamp in 2016, but he has leapt from =s win in the Prix Morny helped seal the first season his four-year fee of i9,000 to i30,000. Havana Gold is also the sire of Headway (GB), beaten just a nose by Rajasinghe (Ire) in the G2 Coventry S., and G3 Curragh S. winner Treasuring (GB), who has now been transferred from Ger Lyons to Simon Callaghan in California. It sounds crazy to say that a horse with the class of treble Classic winner Camelot (GB) is something of a surprise package among this year's freshmen but he is when considering how much he has achieved already.

DADDYS LIL DARLING RITVO: CURRENT MEET VITAL TO SANTA ANITA=S FUTURE GETS HER GRADE I By Bill Finley When a racetrack sits on property that is likely worth hundreds of millions of dollars and is not making any money with its core business, that=s a problem. When does someone say it no longer makes sense to continue to race when there=s a windfall profit to be made on developing the real estate? Kathy=s Song (Candy Ride {Arg}) was up for third. AShe was second in the Kentucky Oaks, second in the [GI] Ashland, but it was one of those things,@ winning trainer Ken McPeek said of the Normandy Farm homebred. AWhat are you going to do but keep trying? We wanted to keep her in straight 3-year-old filly competition before the year was out. Fortunately, she stayed on form. AIt was a bit frustrating because she was always competitive but didn=t have things go her way. She=s a special filly and you just have to keep trying with those kind. She tries hard on any kind of going, and that makes a trainer=s job pretty easy.@

Handle, Field Size Increase for Hawthorne Fall Meet: Despite a rain-filled opening two months of the fall Thoroughbred meet at Hawthorne and a cancellation of the closing-day card due to extreme cold temperatures, both handle and field size saw significant increases as the meet concluded Dec. 29. Total daily handle for 36-day fall meet averaged $1,708,081, up 9.17% from the $1,564,655 wagered per racing day in the fall of 2016. While the poor weather led to a slight onsite decrease of 5% from $54,031 per card in 2016 to $51,284 per card this fall, in-state handle rose 3.74%, $105,305 this fall compared to $101,510 in the fall of 2016. Out-of-state handle on Hawthorne's races rose 10%, increasing to $1,551,492 this fall versus $1,409,114 wagered per day in the fall of 2016.
