Between Kubiak’s 2011 campaign and Carlin’s Captains debut last year, the Captains had a new manager every year for seven straight years. ALUMNI ON THE BENCH: Captains Pitching Coach Owen Dew and Bench Coach Jordan Smith both played for Lake Captains Contacts County before beginning their coaching careers. Dew pitched for the Captains in 2010 and 2011, and was part of Lake County’s lone championship squad in 2010. His playing career ended after 2013, due to an elbow injury. Smith played for the Captains in 2012 and was known by fans as “The Milkman,” due to his love for the nutrient-rich drink. He was unranked at the start of last season. 2018: Across nine starts with Mahoning Valley last season, Oviedo posted a career-best marks in ERA (1.88), K% (32.5), BB% (5.3), K-BB% (27.1), batting average against (.192), WHIP (0.92), FIP (2.40) and xFIP (2.17). He finished the season with two starts for Lake County, in which he allowed three runs on five hits over nine innings. He struck out six and walked seven. SCRAPPERS RECORD: Oviedo set a new Scrappers single-game strikeout record on June 28 at West Virginia. In just his third start in the New York -Penn League, Oviedo struck out 12 Black Bears over six innings. He also struck out six batters in a row from the second to the fourth. STRIKEOUT STUFF: Oviedo left Mahoning Valley with the second-highest K% in the New York-Penn League (32.5) and second in strikeouts (61). He was also fifth in swinging strike percentage (14.0). 2017 : Oviedo led the Arizona League in K/9 (12.2) and K% (28). The right-hander was also second in the circuit in strikeouts (70). Oviedo, however, posted a 7.14 ERA, though he did have a .408 BABIP. MLB.COM SCOUTING REPORT: “Oviedo trained in the same Venezuelan program that produced Indians rotation stalwart Carlos Carrasco, and the two right-handers had similar stuff and builds at the same stage of their careers… Oviedo’s projectability appealed to Cleveland and he already has started to deliver on it, with his fastball increasing from the upper 80s when he signed to the mid 90s with a peak of 98 mph and quality sink in 2019 Highs 2018. His advanced changeup is his secondary offering and could develop into a second plus pitch. The Indians have encouraged him to throw his curveball more often and he also has a harder slider, both of which are solid INNINGS ........................................................................................................ at their best… Unlike a lot of young, tall pitchers, Oviedo has little difficulty repeating his delivery. He throws STRIKEOUTS................................................................................................ consistent strikes from a three-quarters arm slot that creates angle and movement.
