Cork Students Encouraged to Enter Competition Pathway into ‘Ireland’s Most Exciting Industry’ Dare to be Digital is an international video games development competition for third-level stu- dents. In Ireland, it is coordinated by the DHDA, and supported by the North-South Cooperation Unit at the Department of Education and Skills. Teams of five students – usually a mix of artists, programmers and audio specialists – can apply. Successful applicants will spend nine weeks at Abertay University in Scotland in summer 2012, developing prototype video games and receiving mentoring from industry experts. Participating students receive a weekly stipend of £150 each, free accommodation at the University’s halls of residence, and a team budget of £200. We all know that Ireland has a huge drinking culture and most of us know Niamh Hayes, Vice-President Welfare Officer of CIT SU, says “We will be that we drink more than we should. There is nothing wrong with alcohol, encouraging each and every student and staff member to try out the online in fact, it is perfectly okay to drink, as long as it is in small quantities and assessment. You have a little more and you begin to stumble. perform a comedy gig afterwards. 5. Hey you buy some more and you begin to spill your drink. 6. Finally you may pass out or vomit all over yourself. What effect does your drinking have on others? So you may think that you’re the only one suffering the day after a night out, but you’re wrong. Think of the amount of people you could have p****d off last night. It’s not easy to deal with a friend’s drink problems. As a result of your actions, your friends may end up stressed and anxious and spend a lot of time worrying about you. This in turn will affect their college work. Drinking heavily, although common right around Ireland, is selfish behaviour, and it’s not only your friends that are affected. You’re probably upsetting your family as well; people working in the local pub and anyone you drooled over when you were drunk. If you are worried about a friend’s drinking habits, talk to them when they’re sober. Top tips on enjoying a night out • Eat before you start drinking. This slows down the rate that alcohol is absorbed into your body. • Drink slowly - don’t gulp down three pints in an hour as you’re half way to a binge drinking session (six or more drinks in one session). • If you feel yourself getting drunk, slow down or stop drinking until you sober up somewhat. You’re less likely to go home with vomit on your- self this way. • Drink loads of water or a non-alcoholic drink while you’re drinking alco- hol. Before you go to bed drink some more water as it will stop you get- ting too dehydrated which causes the hangover headache the next day. • Don’t accept drinks from strangers or leave your drink unattended for any amount of time. I know it may seem a little daunting but you can still have fun on a night out without drinking. Get your friends to go out on the dry for a night. You can spend the night dancing, chatting and checking out the talent. You’ll still look amazing at 2am and you’ll wake up feeling refreshed and able to remember everything. Go on, give it a try! 4 5-8th March 2012 Safety WeekTimetable

11 CIT RAG WEEK By Vicky O’Sullivan 2012 review

n eclectic mix of sports, arts, culture, live entertainment and much more cul- minated in a highly interactive and integrative Rag Week this year. Throughout the week various Societies were determined to liven up the main corridor and eachA day brought a new and exciting style of entertainment - from juggling to live music performances, dance to modern warfare and chess to artistic exhibitions – there was something to suit everyone. The ‘Reem Team’ reigned supreme in the Rag Week Soccer League and the ‘Portascos”,’ claimed victory in the Rag Week Soccer Tournament. The week was launched with a live comedy show as Dave McSavage regaled a packed audience in the Nexus with his outrageous quips and anecdotes. The Circus Society provided some well needed distraction as they offered people the opportu- nity to throw wet sponges at a ‘somewhat’ co-operative unicyclist. Activities were ‘kept local’ on Monday night with a jam packed McCarthy’s Bar and Bistro where students partied through the night and were entertained with live music from ‘Mis- hap’. Impressively BS2A managed to raise over €350 for the Irish Cancer Society by holding a Table Quiz on Monday evening. Romance was definitely in the air (for some anyway) on Valentines Day with the live ‘Take me Out’ game show hosted in the Nexus. A few successful matches were made but hats are not recommended at this stage. The Post Grads seized their opportu- nity to sweeten CIT up on the day and raised a very impressive €354 at their cake sale. The Traffic Light Disco in Eclipse was awash with would be wooers, but reliable sources have reported that due to the guys’ lack of seduction skills, the Red Lights were working overtime. Stevie Starr regurgitated some strange objects much to the consternation and even aversion of some of the audience. No gold fish were harmed during this performance! It was a day for some much needed R&R and this was provided by an evening at the theatre with the Animé Soc. CIT resounded with peels of laughter on Thursday as the enchanting Michael McCoy brought a number of willing subjects on stage to perform, regale and generally make idiots of themselves – live and in person. A marathon hypnotic show captivated the huge audience in the Nexus. Questions have been raised as to whether Joe Keane was in fact hypnotised since he showed up to work in a suit but it has been confirmed that the sporting Joe donned his best for charity and raised €500 in the process. Joe’s photos have received the most facebook hits in the history of the SU facebook page. Tramps Balls concluded the weeks line up and with it came the costume wearing ‘die hards’, and students who danced the night away to a very impressive per- formance from UV5. With well over €7,000 of much needed funds raised for charities, Rag Week 2012 can be deemed as a all round success – here’s to Rag Week 2013.

12 BS 2A Fundraising Table Quiz for Irish Cancer Society On Monday 13th February we held a table quiz in The Loft for the Irish Cancer Society to kick off Rag week. When we first came up with the idea way back in Novemeber we never anticipated that the night would be the roaring success it was! We expected to fill up a maximum of twenty tables when we were planning the event, we ended up with thirty three tables and over 150 people; we literally couldn’t believe it. To see a queue a mile long coming up the staircase of the Loft was truly heart-warming and a true sign of the solidarity within the CIT Community, which sets us apart from other third level institutions. We couldn’t have been happier with the way the night turned out; the craic was ninety, so much so that the drink started to run dry upstairs! We raised a grand total of €352.75, which far exceeded our initial expectations. We’d like to give our sincere thanks to everyone who came along on the night, much appreciated guys. We’d like to thank all in the Students’ Union without whom the night wouldn’t have been half the success it was. We’d like to also extend a warm thank you to our glamorous assistants on the night, thanks a million to Emma Walsh, Laura O’ Reagan, Carol Walsh & Laura Horgan, We would have been up the walls without ye guys! Doodle’ Drawing Success By Isabelle Rossiter Doodle artists from CIT and Crawford College of Art participated in an eight- hour long drawathon on the Monday of Rag Week. This was part of an inno- vative ‘Idea Hub Society’ event to bring both campuses together. The artists created one off original pieces inspired by the theme of doodling. The doodles went on to be launched at a trendy reception, featuring music and a full set from the DJ society and a large video animation of the artists at work. All the doodles featured on the night were purchased via a silent SU Rag Week Soccer League auction to contribute to the Rag Week charity fund. Fourteen teams including 102 students plus ten CIT staff members To view the doodles or to get involved with any future Idea Hub events visit entered the Students’ Union Rag Week League which began way back http://www.facebook.com/ideahub in November. The fourteen teams split into two groups of seven played each other once and the top two from each group played out the semi- final and played during Rag Week on the 14th of February. The top four teams that qualified included Reem Team, Cupid Stunts, Spanish and one Kurdish and the CIT Staff team. The Staff team came undone eventually by Reem Team in the semi-final but they will be happy with their efforts. Cupid Stunts also advanced overcoming the interna- tional students. But the final was one way traffic and Reem Team claimed the prize of €180 plus Take Me Out tickets and Tramps Ball tickets.

SU Rag Week Tournament Tenty one teams consisting of 147 students participated in the Students’ Union Rag Week Tournament which was played out on the 15th and 16th of February on the CIT astro pitches. The tournament was knockout and was played in a friendly but competitive manner enjoyed by all those involved. The international students again made the semi-final, this time renamed “Portascos”, looking strong throughout previous rounds they were expected to overcome The Bagels to advance to the final and they did not disappoint. In the other semi-final a very well organised and good footballing side ,Scouting for Girls, met the determined Sexual Chocolate team, but in a good match Scouting for Girls made the final. The final was played very tactically by Portascos who played onthe counter attack. They scored early on, Scouting for Girls pressed and pressed but a very organised Portacos were just too strong and claimed the crown as Rag Week Champions. Special thanks to the soccer bursary recipients who refereed the games and helped organise the events. Also €284 was raised for charity. By Eric Maher 13 Cork International Student Day took place on the 21st of February… we hope you enjoyed it! The schedule of the day started at 8am, with a breakfast in the Bistro, with a selec- tion of different international foods. This was followed by trips to Blackrock Castle Obser- vatory and to the National Maritime College of Ireland. In the evening a Hurling and Football tast- er session took place, where some of our members learn’t the basics of these great Irish sports! In the evening, more events took place, a Céilí and Irish dancing display in UCC and a ‘International Art After Dark’ party. And we do not want to finish without Cork International mentioning the cultural exhibition that took place in the main Corridor, where people from more than ten different countries did Student Day at CIT their best to support and let others know about their own countries. A big thank you to all of the society members that were involved in the events organised, as well as all of the other people who made this day possible. Zebo secures Bonus Point Win after his 78th minute Try against Treviso Just two days before their RaboDirect Pro12 match against Benetton Treviso on Feb 18th, the Munster squad and management gathered here in CIT for a training session in preparation for the clash in the Stadio di Monigo. Training on the grounds here clearly helped their preparation as they went on to play a fine match of rugby in . Munster had an ideal start, with Danny Barnes collecting a try and an O’ Gara conversion, meaning a seven point lead with less than four minutes gone. Zebo then stepped up to the mark to collect a pass from Barnes to score his first try of the day just five minutes later. Zebo, following a pass from Scott Deasy, went on the score the final try of the match, giving us a victory of 35-14 Ronan O’ Gara really stepped up to the mark in this match, winning “Man of the Match” from his fine performance of striking the ball beau- tifully all day.
