You can call LSU head coach Nick Saban the complete package. Brought to Baton Rouge following the 1999 season to revive what many considered a sleeping giant, Saban has transformed the LSU football program into one that wins championships, while graduating players at the same time. Armed with a plan that gives his players a chance to be successful on the field as well as the classroom, Saban's impact on the program has been immediate and it's been powerful. In just two short years at LSU's head coach, Saban's on-field success has been unmatched as he has guided the Tigers to 18 victories, a pair of bowl wins, including one in a BCS game, and the 2001 title. Off the field, Saban has spearheaded a fundraising effort that has raised more than $15 million for a state-of-the-art academic center for student-athletes. The new LSU Academic Center for Student-Athletes is all part of Saban's plan to give his players the best opportunity to best successful when they finish their football career. Saban didn't waste anytime making his impact felt as the he guided a team coming off back-to-back losing seasons to an 8-4 mark and a win over 15th-ranked Georgia Tech in the to rekindle the fire of a proud football tradition in Baton Rouge. Saban's influence on the Tigers went much further in 2001 as he led LSU to the school's first outright Southeastern Conference title since 1986 with a 31-20 win over second-ranked Tennessee in the SEC title game and followed that win a 47-34 victory over Illinois in the , LSU's first New Year's Day Bowl win since 1968. LSU has won Matt Mauck, Oct. 14 (Florida) seven-straight SEC games and four straight SEC road games. Last year, the Tigers closed Defensive Player of the Week SEC action last year by posting wins over Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn and Tennessee. SABAN ADDS ANOTHER NOTCH TO HIS SEC BELT With LSU's win over South Carolina, Nick Saban has now recorded at least one victory over every SEC team which he has faced. The only two SEC teams that Saban has yet to beat are the only two hasn't faced - Georgia and Vanderbilt. BRADIE JAMES NAMED NATIONAL SCHOLAR-ATHLETE SEC HONORS The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced linebacker Bradie James has been named to the 2002 National Scholar-Athlete Class, which Defensive Player of the Week includes 14 players from all divisions. John Corbello, Sept. 16 (Miami-Ohio) MAUCK UNDERGOES SURGERY; OUT EIGHT WEEKS LSU sophomore quarterback Matt Mauck underwent surgery on Sunday morning to repair a sprained ligament in the mid-foot area of his right foot. Mauck, who suffered the injury in a 36-7 win over Florida on Oct. 12, is expected to be out of action for eight NATIONAL HONORS weeks. The surgery was performed by LSU team doctors Brent Bankston and Larry Ferachi. Bankston said the surgery went extremely well and said the procedure involved Nagurski Defensive Player of the Week Corey Webster, Oct. 15 (Florida) placing two screws in Mauck's foot to stabilize the joint. Mauck started the first six games of the year for the Tigers, leading LSU to a 5-1 mark. He completed 63 of 130 CBS Sportsline Player of the Week passes for 782 yards, nine touchdowns and only two . Randall was the 16th first-time starting quarterback at LSU since ESPN the Magazine Top 100 Players 1980 when Alan Richer started in a 16-0 loss to Florida State. IT MUST BE THE HALFTIME SPEECH Whether it's the halftime motivational speech or adjustments by the coaching staff, something is going on in the LSU locker room at halftime as the Tigers have outscored TIGERS IN THE NFL their opponents 72-10 in the third quarter this year, including 65-0 in the last five games. (as of Oct. 22) Against SEC opponents, the third quarter score is 48-0.
