3 2021 Moreno Valley College Student Commencement Speaker
Evie Marie Moreno Student, Moreno Valley College
Evie Marie Moreno is a student with a unique perspective . Married with five children, Moreno learned how to balance school and family in order to graduate from Moreno Valley College with degrees in Education Paraprofessional, Early Childhood Education and Social Behavioral Studies . Moreno, who will go on to Central State University in Ohio, plans on completing a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education .
She says that although college has not been easy, she is grateful to have had the experience of attending Moreno Valley College, experiencing the leadership on campus and receiving support from EOPS, the Child Development Center and the Learning Center . As she continues her journey thought education, she is honored, and humbled, to have this chance to address the 2021 graduating class .

Adviye Tolunay Professor, Psychology
Adviye Tolunay received her BA in Psychology and MA in Social Psychology from Bogazici University (Istanbul, Turkey) and Ph D. . in Experimental Psychology from University of Rhode Island . She recently completed her 20th year in higher education . Since the fall of 2006, she has been teaching full-time at Moreno Valley College . Prior to joining the faculty at the College, she taught at Bogazici University and Bilgi University (Istanbul, Turkey), University of Rhode Island, and Rhode Island School of Design as associate faculty .
She has extensive background on topics related to social influence, persuasion, and group identity effects on moral reasoning . In addition to teaching general psychology, developmental psychology and social psychology at MVC, she serves as an academic senator and as an assistant chair for the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HESBS) Department . She is an active member of MVC’s Distance Education Committee and the District Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DCSEI) .
Her prior leadership roles include chair of the Diversity Committee Chair, member of the Honors Council, coordinator of the Faculty Development, and a faculty advisor for Pride Alliance and the Psychology Club . She was also instrumental in establishing Annual Diversity Summit and the One Book/One College Program . Tolunay was the first recipient of MVC’s Diversity Award, and she was selected as the Outstanding Faculty Advisor four times by the Associated Students of Moreno Valley College .
Throughout her career she has focused on making quality college education accessible and equitable and has strived to develop an inclusive learning environment at MVC . Tolunay has led a number of student activities and programs in and outside the United States . She led field trips to the Museum of Tolerance, Palm Springs Pride Parade, and RCC Student Leadership Conference, and participated with students in the LA AIDS Walk . She was selected as one of the District faculty to lead 25 students on a 12-day trip to Tokyo and Sendai for Japan Youth Exchange Program in spring of 2013, and as an instructor for the RCCD’s Study Abroad Program, first in Dublin, Ireland, in spring 2015, and again in Florence, Italy, in fall 2017 .

27 Professorship Awards
Moore, Zapata Bestowed Rank of Professor
Moreno Valley College had two faculty members bestowed professorship at the Riverside Community College District Board of Trustees meeting on April 20 . This year, Frankie Moore in Student Activities and Valerie Zapata in English were granted professorship .
Each year, faculty may submit an application for rank of professor to the District’s Professional Growth and Sabbatical Leave Committee . Applications which meet the minimum qualifications are forwarded to the appropriate college president for review . The presidents then forward their recommendations to the chancellor . He then forwards his recommendations to the Board for affirmation.
Frankie Moore Student Activities
In September of 2005, Moore was hired as coordinator of Student Activities and advisor to Student Government . She has a long history of working and mentoring students . Moore began her career as a school relations counselor at the University of Santa Barbara and spent over 19 years at Fresno State University in a variety of positions, leaving after eight years as advisor for Student Leadership and Activities .
“I am humbly honored to receive the rank of professor,” Moore said . “My 35-plus years of experience in higher education and student services allowed me to work tirelessly with students, faculty, staff and administrators on local, state, regional and national levels while serving as an advocate and servant leader . I plan to continue working with students to enhance their leadership skills and organizational development, to inspire, grow and develop the next generation of leaders for the Inland Empire ”.

28 Valerie Zapata English
Zapata, who began as an adjunct faculty member with the District 17 years ago, has been actively involved in the Academic Senate and as the English Department discipline coordinator . She has also served as the Puente English instructor . Zapata has coordinated events for student recruitment, planning and attending multiple university visits across the state, planning cultural events and trainings/breakfasts, Noche de la Familia, and end-of- the-year banquets .
“Receiving full professorship means I can continue doing what I love best, teaching,” Zapata said . “Maybe, with a pat on the back and extra wind beneath my wings, I can continue to be a champion for my students . I remain steadfast and passionate in my quest for creating equity and opportunity for all students . I also want to keep aiding my Moreno Valley College community in making this place even more welcoming and inclusive . Receiving full professorship lets me know that I’m on the right track and will keep up the good fight.”

Casey Orr Visiting Assistant Professor, Counseling Student Support Services
Casey Orr, Ph D. ,. started working in Riverside Community College District in 2012 . On June 24, she will conclude her career at Moreno Valley College as a member of the counseling faculty . During her career at the College, she was known for being meticulous and detail-oriented, which has endeared her to her students . Orr was a tireless faculty advisor to the College’s Active Minds Club, a student organization dedicated to preventing self-harm and promoting mental wellness. The faculty benefited from her work on the Curriculum Committee and efforts to implement Guided Pathways through degree mapping for the college’s EduNav rollout .
