TABLE of CHURCH of IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS THROUGHOUT IRELAND (Baptisms, Marriages, Burials & Copies) ______ ____________________________________________ TABLE OF CHURCH OF IRELAND PARISH REGISTERS THROUGHOUT IRELAND (Baptisms, Marriages, Burials & copies) ____________________________________________ · What Exists · Dates Covered · Where To Find Them Table of Parochial Registers Throughout Ireland Amended and updated by the RCB Library to July 2015 The following is an updated version of the list originally compiled in-house for the Public Record Office of Ireland (PROI) - now the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) - by Miss Margaret Griffith (1911-2001) Deputy Keeper of the PROI during the 1950s. The original list was based on inventories returned by the parochial officers about the year 1875/6, and subsequently corrected in the light of subsequent events and information. A table showing the position in July 1891 was printed as an appendix to the 23rd Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. In the light of 1922 and the loss of over 500 collections, this situation changed dramatically – indicated by the large numbers of collections underlined on this list meaning they were destroyed by fire in the PROI in 1922. Further background about salved original registers and transcripts is available in the 55th Report of the Deputy Keeper of the Public Records Office of Ireland. The reason the list does not account for registers from the latter half of the 1870s onwards is explained by the fact that they were not covered by the Public Records (Ireland) Act, 1867, Amendment Act, 1875 (which did not extend beyond the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland) and thus they fall under the remit of the Representative Church Body, rather than the state. The list has been updated regularly since 1984, when the PROI agreed that the RCB Library should be the place of deposit for Church of Ireland registers, and in many instances, the collections transferred carry on to very recent decades. Where records remain in local custody, it may be assumed that they carry on after the cover dates given in the list. Having been amended and corrected several times since within NAI, and further cross-checked, updated and colour-coded for all original collections in NAI, PRONI and the RCB Library, by Dr Susan Hood of the RCB Library, the table may now be considered definitive list for all Church of Ireland registers available in their original format. This electronic list will now be maintained, amended and updated by the RCB Library on an ongoing basis, and is currently corrected up to July 2015. We are most grateful to Ms Aideen Ireland, Senior Archivist at the NAI, and to Ms Lorraine Bourke, PRONI, for their co-operation with this project. KEY RCB = Original records held by the Representative Church Body Library, Churchtown, Dublin 14. PRONI = Original records held by the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland, Belfast [total 74]. Additionlly it can be assumed that PRONI holds while the microfilm copies of many collections for parishes in the nine counties comprising Ulster, and further information is available here… Ordinary type, underlined = e.g. Abbyefeale indicates registers of that parish were in PROI in 1922 and were thus not salved. Ordinary type, underlined = parishes the records of which were lost in 1922, but for which subsequent materials were located and lodged either in the RCB Library or PRONI. Normally this colour code is followed by an RCB library or PRONI entry. Capitals = parishes the records of which are deposited in whole or in part in PROI [total 9]. For details see NAI Reading Room catalogue. This accounts for just nine collections (all in ROI) which remained in the custody of PROI after 1922, and thereafter in the NAI since. Ordinary type (no colour/underline) = Parishes the records of which records remain in local custody. For parishes located in the nine counties of Ulster, and additionally some for county Louth, microfilm copies of most collections of surviving registers (up to the early 20th century) are available in PRONI. For details consult PRONI’s online catalogue: http://www.proni.gov.uk/ Note that local clergy in both NI and ROI are however obliged to make available original registers in their custody available under both national legislation and in accordance with the Constitution of the Church of Ireland. * = copy of some records were extant in Public Record Office (now NAI). For details see NAI Reading Room catalogue. + = copy known to be extant in local custody. For details see Appendix VIII to 56th Report of the Deputy Keeper. It is possible that further copies may exist about which no information has been received by the Public Record Office, especially in the case of Northern Ireland parishes. Where collections have been transferred to the RCB Library, these local copies have been integrated into parish collections. Transcpt = All or part of the early collection are transcript copies, rather than originals. M = Microfilm copy available in the Reading Room of the NAI only. See card index and bound diocesan lists for further details. Note the dates of registers covered by the films may not be those of the originals as recorded by Miss Griffith, nor may they be the same dates as for those registers now deposited in the RCB Library. In most instances no filming was undertaken of 20th-century registers. CE = indicates a Chapel of Ease. NOTE: With regards to dates, cover dates only of registers in the three categories of baptism, marriage or burials, are given in the table. For parishes with churches still in existence it may be assumed there are current registers, and thus the last date indicated on the table represents the last date on which material was either transferred to the RCB Library, or microfilmed either by PROI or PRONI. Some notes indicated by a footnote reference number in red, e.g. (1), provide more details such as gaps in date runs, copies available and other information for individual parishes. It has come to our attention that a number of transcripts of parish registers in the dioceses of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, and of Limerick, together with odd miscellaneous parishes from other Church of Ireland dioceses, compiled by the late Michael Leader, a former vice-President of the Irish Genealogical Research Society, are available in the library of that society in London. For a complete list see this link: http://www.irishancestors.ie/?page_id=3297 To draw specific attention to the odd items, we have footnoted those on the list below. • The Earl of Thomond's 1615 Survey of Ibrickan, Co
McInerney Thomond 15/1/14 10:52 AM Page 173 North Munster Antiquarian Journal vol. 53, 2013 173 The Earl of Thomond’s 1615 Survey of Ibrickan, Co. Clare LUKE McINERNEY A transcription and discussion of an early seventeenth century survey of a Co. Clare barony. The chief value of the document is that it represents the earliest rent-roll detailing the Earl of Thomond’s estate in Co. Clare and merits study not least because it is one of the most comprehensive surveys of its type for early seventeenth century Co. Clare. Furthermore, it may be used to ascertain the landholding matrix of Ibrickan and to identify the chief tenants. Presented here is a survey undertaken of the barony of Ibrickan in Co. Clare in 1615.1 The survey covered the entire 63 quarters of the barony. It is lodged at Petworth House archive among the collection of Thomond Papers there.2 At present, our understanding of the changes in landholding for Ibrickan is hindered by the fact that the returns in the 1641 Books of Survey and Distribution3 show that by that time proprietorship of the barony was exclusively in the hands of the Earl of Thomond and few under-tenants are recorded. Having a full list of the chief tenants which dates from the second decade of the seven- teenth century augments our understanding of the changes wrought to landholding, inheritance and social relations in Gaelic regions at a critical juncture in Irish history following the battle of Kinsale. This 1615 survey of part of the extensive estate of the Earl of Thomond serves to focus our gaze at a lower echelon of Gaelic society.

I was born in Drumraney and was educated at the local school there. There was nothing taught in school then that would serve as a foundation or build-up in young boys any deep sense of patriotism. father had been in Australia and there he had come in contact with many of the men who had been deported or had to leave Ireland because they loved it too well, according to English standards When we were children, he regularly discussed Irish History with us and enlightened us on the many crimes and wrongs perpetrated on our country by the English invader, and he often sang traditional folk songs for us. Thus we grew up in an atmosphere in which there was a love for everything Irish and with a great desire to see the country independent and in commandof her own destiny. I think my father was a Fenian. I had read and studied books such as "The Jail Journal" and "The last Conquest". In 1907 I became a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. Peter Malinn was organising the I.R.B. in County Westmeath at this time and later on w brother John continued to push the.
