The special has some of Hollywood's biggest names in comedy contributing to the commentary including Chris Rock, Denis Leary, Jay Leno, George Lopez, Lewis Black, Kathy Griffin and Richard Belzer. Between their commentaries is a string of some of Kinison's greatest stand-up moments allowing Kinison to be remembered as the one-of-a-kind act that he was. "I miss my dad and I miss Sam Kinison. I really wish I could show him what I've done, because he had so much to do with it," says Chris Rock. "Back From Hell: A Tribute to Sam Kinison" DVD will be released uncut and uncensored via COMEDY CENTRAL Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment on Tuesday, November 16. Bonus features include stories from The Comedy Store in Los Angeles with comedians Pauly Shore, Marc Maron among others; A Live "Wild Thing" performance and the original music video of the song; and additional classic Kinison stand-up. Kinison brought an unseen intensity to the table that captivated audiences nationwideand left them appalled and crying with laughter. A Pentecostal minister before turning to comedy, Kinison's preacher style stand up was a rare thing of disgusting beauty that is still missed today. With a reputation as a world class party animal, he was deemed the "Rock n' Roll Comedian" and transformed himself into one of the most successful and influential stand-ups of the '80s and early '90s.     Walter Latham Often referred to as "The King of Comedy,” Walter Latham is grateful for the humble upbringing and everyday challenges that shaped his early life, and instilled in him a fierce passion that led to his success as a business mogul and humanitarian. Born to a single mother in East New York, Brooklyn, Latham soon found himself in a similar situation, becoming a father at the young age of 18, and struggling to get by with odd jobs and a brief stint in the United States Air Force. At 20, he caught a break with a permanent position at the American Express Call Center in Greensboro, NC and was thrilled to finally provide healthcare for his son, even though he knew he was bound for something greater. Inspiration soon struck Latham, after attending a performance by his childhood friend, MC Lyte, when he realized his calling was to produce concerts. He borrowed money from his mother and produced his first concert in a nightclub. The headline act didn’t show and Latham had to refund the patrons their money but what he learned from this unfortunate experience would change his path forever. Latham decided to produce more concerts but mitigate his losses by soliciting sponsorships. He wrote and mailed 50 letters to various corporations about promoting a southeast tour with the hottest comedians. When Coors Brewing Company expressed interest, Latham soon found himself, at age 21, standing in a boardroom of top executives pitching his comedy idea. His first comedy tour featured Chris Tucker and Bill Bellamy and Coors was so impressed they asked Latham to do another.

The first shortcoming suggests a theoretical void: that although “a number of different disciplines take comedy as their subject matter, the opportunities afforded to the inter-disciplinary study of comedy are rarely, if ever, capitalized on.”1 The second indicates a methodological void: there is a “lack of literature on ‘how’ to analyse stand-up comedy.”2 This research project examines the relationship between political consciousness and satirical humour in stand-up comedy and attempts to redress these two shortcomings.

Stand-up comics balance on a fine edge between the funny and the offensive. They can be social critics, prodding audiences to look at the unfairness and inequality in life and to rise above them with a laugh. They can also be part of that unfairness by using humor to make fun of women, gays, and ethnic groups, allowing some members of their audiences to feel superior to those who are the butts of the joke. The dilemma is well expressed by Henry Machtey on the Gay Comedy Links website: "Stand-up comedy. Cracking jokes. Are you going to aim those jokes at people who are less powerful? or people who are more powerful?" Too often, gay men have been the objects of hostile humor. Queer jokes, like female jokes and ethnic jokes, have long been a staple of straight stand-up comics looking for an easy laugh from audiences eager to assert their own heterosexuality in a world where it is often dangerous to be gay. At the same time, however, perhaps long before the all-male Greek theater of the fourth century B.C.E., audiences have also had a fascination with gender-bending.
