SAINT MARTHA (first century) July 29 Whether you find Martha Stewart admirable or annoying, she has the perfect patron saint. Luke describes Martha — saint, not Stewart — as “burdened with much serving” (Luke 10:40). About Mary, seated, listening to Jesus, Martha complained, “Do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?” Jesus’ response, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things … Mary has chosen the better part” (10:41, 42), suggests to some the superiority of the contemplative life, leaving the rest of us, supporting families, earning livings, (helping others?), as second-class Christians. But Luke introduces Martha and Mary immediately after Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan, whom Jesus recommends as a model of practical compassion, concluding, “Go and do like- wise” (10:37). Go and do! Sit and listen! Disciple- ship is never either/or but both/and. Jesus minis- tered in prayerful silence and hospitable service. Monastic calendars add Martha’s sister, Mary, and brother, Lazarus, calling all three “hosts of the Lord,” recalling their welcome of Jesus to their home in Bethany, reminding us Whom we welcome whenever we extend summertime hospitality! ** VOLUNTEERS ** TRAINING REQUIRED Please complete two REQUIRED trainings. It is very important for the life of our Parish that ALL vol- unteers and staff are up-to-date with these trainings. 1. Return to Church, COVID Training (13 minutes) https://www.dsj.org/return-to-church/ 2. Safe Environment The safe environment training is good for three years. It is likely that some volunteers may be overdue with this training. We strongly encourage you to have this done ASAP. We need to be ready when allowed to return to actively meet for any ministry. https://www.virtusonline.org/mytraining/ training_courses_online.cfm Please report to Irene Holowchak with your certifi- cate of completion or if you have any questions send email to: [email protected] Returning to In-Person Masses Before You Arrive: • Check your temperature before coming to church. If it reads 100.4, or if you are not feeling well, please stay home and watch a streamed Mass. When You Arrive: • Wear a mask at all times and only remove it for a moment when you receive Communion (required for everyone over the age of 6). • Sanitize your hands before you enter the church. • Observe physical distance of 6ft. (look for markings on the floor). • Collection baskets will be “stationary.” Please drop in your weekly envelope on the way in or out of Mass. • Enter only in marked doorways. • Follow the directions of the priest, staff and the ushers before, during and after Mass. During Mass: • Do not change seats during a service. • Do not exchange the sign of peace physically. • Keep your children with you at all times. • Sit with your family and maintain 6ft. from non- family members. Please maintain 6ft. even in the line for Holy Communion. Follow Instructions for Communion: • Leave your seat only when directed by the usher or greeter.
