NOTRE DAME CLUB OF ROCHESTER NEWSLETTER – FALL 2019

First and foremost, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping the ND Club of Rochester build such a strong and supportive community. It has been wonderful spending time with many of you throughout the year. We celebrated our 2018 Outstanding Club of the Year award and the many bonds we have formed within the ND-Rochester family at the club social in May. It is truly an honor and humbling experience to serve the alumni, family, and friends of Notre Dame in the Rochester community.

2019 has been an exciting year for the Club (hence the 9-page newsletter!). We held a wonderful UND Celebration with Dr. Ken Dye, our first-ever Project Mom Baby Shower, hosted an outstanding SSLP student, and relaxed at our club picnic and Red Wings outing. This fall, we look forward to some exciting events, including our third annual Senior Luncheon, Hesburgh Lecture with Professor O’Rourke, ND Glee Club concert, women’s fall shared read discussion, and ND-Navy game watch! More information on these and other events can be found in this newsletter and on our website. We hope you’ll join us for some (or all!) of these events.

Be sure to mark your calendars for our holiday events. The annual ND Women’s Holiday Luncheon will be held on Saturday, December 7 at . Calling All Teachers - Excellence in Teaching Conference

The University of Notre Dame’s Institute for Educational Initiatives aspires to meet the needs of PreK-12 teachers across STEM content areas through this year’s Excellence in Teaching Conference. This 2-day conference, to be held April 3 – 5, 2020 on Notre Dame’s campus, will focus on the theme “STEM as a force for good.” Speakers will address issues of curriculum, instruction, and assessment at the intersection of problem- based learning and authentic, relevant contexts as a means for generating agency among STEM learners.

The Club sponsors one teacher in the Rochester area to attend this conference, and will provide conference fees and a stipend ($500) for travel/accommodations. The selected teacher must provide their own transportation. Additional information about the conference, including methods and schedule, can be found here under Broader Impacts. Calling all ND-Rochester ladies! Join the ND Club of Rochester as we participate in the national Notre Dame Women Connect's ninth Shared Reading Experience. This fall's book selection is Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover. A virtual discussion via NDWC on Facebook began on September 8th. Hesburgh Lecture

The Club is thrilled to welcome Professor James O'Rourke as our 2019 Hesburgh Lecturer. We hope you will join us at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, October 23rd at St. John Fisher College for Professor O'Rourke's lecture, entitled Intercultural Communication. Whether you are operating a global business or working within a highly diverse North American workplace, effective intercultural communication skills are essential. Going beyond a look at customs and cultural stereotypes, we'll dig into the concepts and research that help explain why we function the way we do. This lecture will examine intercultural situations to see these theories at work. Along with developing a self-awareness of our individual communication behavior, we will explore ways you can become a more effective intercultural communicator. We can expand your awareness of those skills as we examine the challenging ethical issues sometimes raised in intercultural communication. Click here for more information.

Kits for Kids

The ND Senior Alumni sponsor a service initiative for ND clubs nationwide called “Kits for Kids”. The premise is simple: Every year, millions of children in developing countries die of preventable and treatable conditions. Many live too far away to easily reach their nearest clinic, and this lack of immediate basic care can quickly transform a very simple medical problem or injury into a life-threatening situation.

The ND Club of Rochester is implementing the Kits for Kids program again this holiday season. We will be purchasing the bags and need your help to fill them. If you are willing to fill a kit(s), please fill out this form to indicate the number of kits you will supply and when you can drop off the supplies. Click here to view the supply list. Thanks for your support of this wonderful initiative!

Club Bestows Annual Award on Amy Porter ‘14 By Terry Biracree ‘85

It was my distinct pleasure to bestow the club’s annual award on Amy Porter, ’14 at this year’s Universal Notre Dame Celebration at the on June 20. The award is given in recognition of spirited self-giving to the club and the Rochester community. Amy was selected for this honor because she so enthusiastically stands for Notre Dame and represents the ND Club of Rochester in numerous ways. Her dedication won the club recognition at the annual Leadership conference at ND in April when the Alumni Association recognized the ND Club of Rochester as the Outstanding Club of the Year in our size category. Last fall, she accepted a position with the Alumni Association’s Board of Directors as the Young Alumni Director for our region.

Amy began her affiliation with the club when she was an undergraduate at ND and served as the club’s On-Campus Liaison. In this capacity, she organized opportunities for current Rochester students to visit the retired Father Hesburgh.

After graduating from ND in 2014 with a degree in Chemical Engineering, she returned to Rochester and took a job as a Research Engineer at . At this time, she served as the Young Alumni Coordinator and volunteered to become the Coordinator for the Blessed Sacrament Supper Program.

Three and a half years ago, she stepped into the role as our Club President, becoming one of the youngest club presidents in the Alumni Association. Under her leadership, the club has experienced a renaissance:  She’s grown the club membership every year for the last 3 years. Today, our current level of membership is over 160 dues-paying members.  She’s brought the club to the 20th century – instituting on-line sign-ups for the Blessed Sacrament program, updating social media, and configuring on-line credit card payments via the club website.  She’s run family picnics, revitalized the Hesburgh lecture series, coordinated club newsletters, run game watches, happy hours, book discussions, career networking & “Paint Like a Champion” events, sold and delivered football tickets and T-shirts, and offered unique events such as Bookstore Bowling and the showing of a documentary by an ND professor on the Irish Rebellion of 1916 at the Little Theater.

As Ed Nowak, a past club-president and long-standing club volunteer stated, “What this young lady has done to re- vitalize this club is nothing short of a miracle.” It is with deep gratitude that the ND Club of Rochester thanks Amy for her passion, her innovation, her kindness, and her generosity in serving our club!

Celebrating 75 Years of African American Students at Notre Dame

What do Wayne Edmonds, ’56; Bill Hurd, ’69; Bonita Bradshaw, ’77; Melvin Tardy, ’86, MBA ’90; Jubba Seyyid, ’92; Rhea Boyd, ’06; and Tai-ler “TJ” Jones, ’14 all have in common? Their ND stories were featured during the recent ND Club of Rochester’s celebration of 75 years of African American students at ND that took place on Tuesday evening September 17 at the Spiegel Community Center in Pittsford. The celebration focused on the stories from the book:

Black Domers: African-American Students at Notre Dame in Their Own Words Edited by Don Wycliff and David Krashna, University of Notre Dame Press, 2017

Sid Wilkin ’56, Phil Yawman ’62, Gail Burke ’75, MS ’77, David Speach ’84, Tyelise Patros Dorsey ’93, MS ’94, Meghan Shaughnessy ’09, and Brian Dupra ’11 prepared remarks for the event. All agreed that the intellect and talents of these black Domers was stellar. Additionally, all agreed with Editor Don Wycliff ’69 who states in the book’s preface that despite trials and tribulations, “African-American students have broadened and deepened the educational experiences of all at ND by bringing their perspectives to her classrooms, dormitories, teams, and clubs.” As one Rochester club member stated, “We owe a great deal to Father Hesburgh, his vision and tireless efforts to welcome African Americans to ND.”

The club celebrates that strides have been made on the path that Frazier Thompson, ’47 forged 75 years ago as the first African American to matriculate at ND, but we simultaneously temper the positive noting that until racism is no more, important work remains to be done. As such, the club is contemplating a plan for continuing this discussion.

Inaugural Project Mom Community Baby Shower By Rosalind Walker ‘89

The Notre Dame Club of Rochester held its first Project Mom Baby Shower on August 2 at the 1872 Café. Aptly named because of its location as the exact spot where Susan B. Anthony was arrested in 1872 for attempting to vote, 30 people gathered at this unique venue for an inspiring event to encourage four expectant moms navigating a challenging time in their lives.

Project Mom is a NDAA-sponsored program in which ND clubs host baby showers for expectant mothers in need of material and relational support. Utilizing some funding from the NDAA, clubs partner with churches, crisis pregnancy centers, and community organizations to identify shower recipients. The Rochester Club contacted six crisis pregnancy organizations to share the vision of Project Mom. For this inaugural event, we were able to partner with three organizations: Embracing Options, Youth for Christ’s Parent Life, and Healthy Baby Network. Our honored baby shower recipients were Akira, Mariah, Christina, and Tasheka who was expecting twins– so five celebrated babies in all.

For two months before the event, the ND Club of Rochester established a baby registry and collected donations from its members. As our club members excitedly shared Project Mom with family and friends, people throughout the Rochester community and beyond, as far west as Illinois and as far east as Paris, France, donated baby goods, talent, and time to bless these moms and children. We were able to present four large, bountiful gift baskets overflowing with baby clothes, diapers, baby care products, books, handmade quilts, blankets, gift cards, and more. We were able to donate additional items to a fourth organization, Birthright of Rochester. As a bonus, a women’s group from Abundant Life Faith Ministries heard about Project Mom and volunteered to professionally decorate the event. Perfectly matching 1872 Café’s décor, our guests were welcomed into a beautiful venue all made possible through the generous efforts of over 50 people near and far.

The baby shower began with a meet & greet, shower games and activities, and a delicious meal prepared by 1872 Café’. The opening program kicked off with the traditional welcome, a brief overview of the ND Club of Rochester and Project Mom, an introduction of club members, agency directors, and the moms themselves, and then a powerful prayer from club member Karen Bunker that captured the intent of this event:

Heavenly Father, You who breathe life into creation by the power of the Holy Spirit and make each and every person in Your image and likeness, send forth the Holy Spirit anew upon those who are here today. Dispel their fears and grant them courage to bring forth this new life into the world, which is a precious gift from You. Provide for them love and support from those around them to help ease the burden they carry at this time. Help them to see the light of Your face and Your joy. Delight in them and their child and grant them a spirit of wisdom and understanding to direct their path. Amen

Throughout the event, we reminded the moms that their current situation is not a showstopper and encouraged them to pursue their dreams and aspirations for both themselves and their children. The loving care and generosity of the ND Club of Rochester and the community awed the moms. A heart-felt thank you to everyone who contributed to blessing Akira, Mariah, Christina, Tasheka, their babies, and families with Project Mom!

Uniquely Notre Dame

The theme selected by the Alumni Association for this year’s Universal Notre Dame Celebration was “Uniquely Notre Dame”. Our keynote speaker was Dr. Ken Dye, Professor of Music and Director of the Band of the Fighting Irish. Dr. Dye was introduced by Jack Wurzer ’19 who studied trumpet at Notre Dame and marched in the band. Dr. Dye gave a lively presentation that had everyone singing old tunes and chuckling at old band photographs when he would point out that he was in the photos. Several club members agreed that Dr. Dye was one of the best speakers we’ve had visit from the University. The evening included a thank you by Erin Maxwell ’19 who spoke of her gratitude for her club scholarship which assisted her with tuition over the past four years. Mary Porter ’87 the club’s Admission Volunteer Coordinator presented the Junior of the Year award to David Munechika of Fairport High School. The evening was a wonderful celebration of the camaraderie of our Notre Dame family.

Summer Service Learning Program

Sara Ferraro, ’22 from West Nyack, (Rockland County) was the ND Club of Rochester’s 2019 Summer Service Learning Program (SSLP) student. She arrived in Rochester on May 19 and lived at Rochester’s Bethany Catholic Worker House of Hospitality on Joseph Avenue for 8 weeks. Sara spoke at the Universal ND Celebration at Oak Hill on June 20, expressing her gratitude to the club for sponsoring her SSLP. Sara created a video presentation as the culmination of her SSLP which incorporated inputs from the Bethany House guests and staff. Sara indicated that if she had to summarize her SSLP in a single sentence, it would be, “Social concerns have solutions when we eliminate judgment from the equation.”

"In Her Own Words" ND Alumnae Share Their Stories

At reunion this year, NDWC launched an initiative to record the stories of pioneering ND women graduates entitled “In Her Own Words: Stories from the Early Years of Coeducation at Notre Dame.” Three alumnae from the 1970s — Sharon McAuliffe ’74, Kathy Anders ’74, and Jeanine Sterling ’76 — were interviewed about their experiences as members of Notre Dame’s first classes of undergraduate women. Their stories, along with those of other alumnae, will be collected by NDWC and preserved by the University Archives.

Sharon, Kathy, and Jeanine discussed the various challenges a female faced in those early years. Jeanine, as an entering freshman, was told by a number of individuals that she didn’t belong: “ND lost all its prestige when it admitted you girls” (a parent); “You shouldn’t be here. Go home” (an upperclassman); “Better Dead than Coed” (alumni). All three recalled moments of feeling unwelcome by male students and faculty, as well as the sense that their presence was a novelty rather than being part of the group.

Any of this sound familiar? We want to hear from all of you — about the swim test, the dining hall, living in (and moving out of) Walsh or Badin, being the only female in class, being the first (fill in the blank) — as we prepare to celebrate 50 years of undergraduate coeducation in 2022. If you are interested in participating "In Her Own Words" or in finding out more information, please email Theresa Davey '06 at [email protected]. Help us shape this project and record history!
