GENESIS FIRST CHURCH MINISTRIES, 2020 BILL CUMBIE ([email protected])

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26-28) Intro to Genesis and summary of Gen 1 through 6:9

9 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. 2 The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered. 3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. 4 But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood. 5 And for your lifeblood I will require a reckoning: from every beast I will require it and from man. From his fellow man I will require a reckoning for the life of man. 6 “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image. 7 And you, be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it.”

Note: This is the Institution of government – mankind able to (and mandated to) judge his fellow man Genesis 9:8-17 – God Makes a Covenant with Noah and Creation

8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 “Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your offspring after you,10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the livestock, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark; it is for every beast of the earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations:13 I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh. And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.” Genesis 9:18-29 – The Son’s of Noah, the cursing of Canaan

20 Then Noah began farming and planted a vineyard. 21 He drank of the wine and became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside.23 But Shem and took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were turned away, so that they did not see their father’s nakedness. 24 When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to him. 25 So he said, “Cursed be Canaan; A servant of servants he shall be to his brothers.” 26 He also said, “Blessed be the Lord, The God of Shem; And let Canaan be his servant. 27 “May God enlarge Japheth, And let him dwell in the tents of Shem; And let Canaan be his servant.” 28 Noah lived three hundred and fifty years after the flood.29 So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years, and he died. Why was Canaan cursed?

▪ What about Noah? What about his drunkenness? ▪ What does it mean that Ham uncovered his father’s nakedness? ▪ Why was Canaan (the son of Ham) cursed, not Ham who was the one who did it? ▪ Why was anyone cursed at all? And why was it recorded? Leviticus 18:1-8, 24-25 – uncovering nakedness (NASB)

18 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘I am the Lord your God. 3 You shall not do what is done in the land of where you lived, nor are you to do what is done in the land of Canaan where I am bringing you; you shall not walk in their statutes. 4 You are to perform My judgments and keep My statutes, to live in accord with them; I am the Lord your God. 5 So you shall keep My statutes and My judgments, by which a man may live if he does them; I am the Lord. 6 ‘None of you shall approach any blood relative of his to uncover nakedness; I am the Lord. 7 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father, that is, the nakedness of your mother. She is your mother; you are not to uncover her nakedness.8 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife; it is your father’s nakedness… 24 ‘Do not defile yourselves by any of these things; for by all these the which I am casting out before you have become defiled. 25 For the land has become defiled, therefore I have brought its punishment upon it, so the land has spewed out its inhabitants. Leviticus 18:1-8, 24-25 – uncovering nakedness (NIV) – less literal

181The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘I am the Lord your God. 3 You must not do as they do in Egypt, where you used to live, and you must not do as they do in the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their practices. 4 You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am the Lord your God. 5 Keep my decrees and laws, for the person who obeys them will live by them. I am the Lord.6 “‘No one is to approach any close relative to have sexual relations. I am the Lord. 7 “‘Do not dishonor your father by having sexual relations with your mother. She is your mother; do not have relations with her. 8 “‘Do not have sexual relations with your father’s wife; that would dishonor your father… 24 “‘Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. 25 Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. The end of the 3rd ‘these are the generations of…’ ▪ End of the 1st ‘these are the generations of…’ ▪ Lamech – polygamy ▪ and the boasting of unbridled revenge ▪ End of the 2nd ‘these are the generations of…’ ▪ Mankind totally degenerate. ▪ God is grieved that He has made mankind ▪ End of the 3rd ‘these are the generations of…’ ▪ Noah becomes drunk, his nakedness uncovered ▪ Ham uncovers Noah’s nakedness and Ham’s son Canaan is cursed ▪ Shem and Japeth are Blessed Why was Canaan cursed? ▪ What about Noah? What about his drunkenness? ▪ There is still sin in the world ▪ What does it mean that Ham uncovered his father’s nakedness? ▪ There is an indication that this refers to incest. But at the minimum there is disrespect and ridicule of Noah ▪ Why was Canaan (the son of Ham) cursed, not Ham who was the one who did it? ▪ Not sure but it could be that Canaan was the result of incest between Ham and his mother ▪ Why was anyone cursed at all? And why was it recorded? ▪ It could be a narrative explaining why the Israelites would displace the Canaanites These are the generations of…
