ABSTRAK Kertas karya ini berjudul “A Description of Moral Values in Josh Groban‟s Selected Songs”. Tujuan dalam penulisan kertas karya ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan nilai- nilai moral dalam kehidupan yang digambarkan dalam lirik lagu Josh Groban. Dalam penulisan kertas karya ini, metode yang digunakan adalah Deskriptif Analisis. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah lagu Josh Groban yang terdiri dari tujuh lagu yang berjudul: You Raise Me Up, To Where You Are, You’re Still You, February Song, Granted, You’ll Never Walk Alone dan You Are Loved. Teknik yang digunakan untuk mendeskripsikan data ini yaitu dengan melakukan beberapa langkah, antara lain dengan membaca empat lirik lagu Josh Groban dan mendeskripsikan jenis nilai moral dalam lirik lagu yang terpilih dari Josh Groban. Setelah mendeskripsikan nilai moral yang terdapat pada lagu-lagu tersebut, penulis menemukan beberapa nilai moral yaitu: kepercayaan, kesetiaan, cinta dan kasih sayang, kejujuran, keberanian, pengorbanan pada orang lain, dan keyakinan pada diri sendiri. Kata kunci: Nilai Moral, Lirik Lagu, Josh Groban

ABSTRACT This paper entitled “A Description of Moral Values in Josh Groban‟s Selected Songs”. The aims in this paper is to describes the moral values in life that portrayed in Josh Groban‟s selected song. The method used in this paper is descriptive qualitative method. The data source of this paper are Josh Groban‟s selected song entitled You Raise Me Up, To Where You Are, You’re Still You, February Song, Granted, You’ll Never Walk Alone dan You Are Loved. The technique used to describe the data by reading four lyrics Josh Groban‟s song, understanding the contents of Josh Groban‟s song lyrics, and describe kinds of moral values in Josh Groban‟s selected song lyrics. After describing the moral values in these songs, the writer found several moral values in Josh Groban‟s selected song, there are: strong belief, loyalty, love and affection, honesty, bravery, sacrifing for other and self confidence. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

In this world, communication is important thing. Humans cannot live alone without collaboration with others. Humans need to communicate and interact with each other using language that is easy to understand. Beside communication, language is also one of the important things in our life because without language we cannot communicate with each other. By using language, we can understand each other, express ideas and also express how our feeling. As Iswahyuni (1998:1) says that language is a medium to express the idea, opinion and feeling in the science and education world. Without language people cannot do their activities, and also cannot respond something if we do not understand what other people said.

Literature is a group of works of art made up of words. Most are written, but some are passed on by word of mouth. Literature usually means works of poetry and prose that are especially well written. Literature can also mean imaginative or creative writing, which is looked at for its artistic value. Literature is created by writers to be enjoyed, understood, and utilized by the community. Literature is a reflection of human life. The kind of literature are poem, song, lyrics, novel, movie, drama and others.

Song is an artistic from of expression based on sound, with distinct pitches, pattern and form, generally considered a complete work, whether, musically or lyrically. It can be wordless or with words.

Nowadays, song is getting the high around the world. Song becomes a part of people‟s life that cannot be separated. It connects with the people‟s emotional needs to the desire for entertainments. Sometimes, song can brainwash people from its lyric.

Cooke (1989:19) covered that reaction which music evoke are the images, memories of feeling. In related to music, there are two branches of music which is instrumental music and another one is song.

According to Moeliono (2007:624) the song is a rhyth mic sound. The song is a work of art, the relationship of sound art and the art of language, as the work of sound art involves the melody and the color of the singers voice.

Music is part of people‟s life. Music is very important component in human life. Music may represent the bad or good of human feeling, it is able to express their thoughts, experiences, emotions, and faith. As William (1824:2) said “The only reality in music is the state of mind which it induces in the listener”. Music can also create memories when they are listening to each song. Most people in the world are listening to music. Sometimes, they get addicted to the music. Without the music they feel empty. Music has amazing benefits such as, music makes you happier, music lowers stress and improves health, music helps you sleep better and etc.

Music can shape person‟s character. It can also describe someone‟s feeling at time, when they are happy, sad and others. When a person feel happy, she will listen or sing happy songs like what she feel, and when someone feel sad, she will listen or sing sad songs. Song and lyrics is part of music. Lyric can express judgements about lifestyle, values, and appearances. Than, songs can express attitudes and values.

Every songs lyric has message and suggestion for the listeners, whether good or bad.

Morality is a common word to say, but it is very difficult to imply in human daily life. Since people were born they had been taught about morality, however by the time the morality will decrease or delay. Morality is something that must be owned by human because without morality human will not be respected by other people. Moral values can not only be obtained by discussion in formal situation and getting from books but also people can use songs to deliver the moral message of the songs.

In this paper, the writer want to describe the moral values that can be found in

Josh Groban‟s song lyrics. As already be known, there are many bands or soloist in the music industry. But in this paper the writer will discuss about moral value contained in the song in singing by one of the world famous singer namely Josh

Groban. He is a solo singer who already has many popular songs. He has a lot of albums one of which is Closer. His debut studio album, Josh Groban, was released in

November 2001 with 3 songs. In 2002, He also released new album that is Josh

Groban in Concert.

From discussion above, it is make the writer interested to describe about the moral values in the song lyrics Josh Groban. Therefore, the writer choose the title of this study as “A Description of Moral Values in Josh Groban‟s Selected Song

Lyrics”.

1.2 Problem of the Study

The writer has some problems in writing this study, they are as following

1) What moral values are found in Josh Groban‟s four selected song lyrics?

2) What is the significance of moral values in life portrayed in the four selected song lyrics?

1.3 Objective of the Study

The writer has some objectives in writing this study, they are as following :

1) To describe the moral values in Josh Groban‟s selected song lyrics.

2) To describe the significance of moral values in life portrayed in the lyrics.

1.4 Scope of the Study

The writer only discusses the moral values from Josh Groban‟s selected song lyrics. The moral values discusses only include the belief to judge what is right or wrong, good or bad, moral or immoral contained in the song lyrics. Josh Groban‟s has so many lyrics. So it is important to select the song lyrics that reflect the values.

The writer chooses 7 hit songs from Josh Groban's albums, they are You Raise Me

Alone dan You Are Loved. Because those selected songs is very interesting to know the moral values contained in it.

1.5 Significance of the Study

The description of this paper is expected to give some benefits to the readers.

Significance of this description is to give more understanding about moral values found in literary works especially song. And also, this paper is expected to expand knowledge, useful in the development of quality and learning outcomes.

1.6 Method of the Study

The writer applies descriptive qualitative methods. The library research applies to support the describe of the moral values, as the first step, the writer listen the songlyrics of Josh Groban‟s. Second, the writer reads the song lyrics Josh

Groban‟s. The third, the writer tries to understand the meaning of lyrics. The fourth, the writer chooses words or sentences that have moral values. And the last, the writer making some notes to describe types moral values before making conclusion.

CHAPTER II REVIEW OF LITERATURE 2.1 Literature

Literature comes from the latin “litteratura” which is etymologically derived from the word littera (letter or hand writing). Greil Marcus and Werner Sollor (2009), says that “literary means not only what is written but what is voiced, what is expressed, what is invented, in whatever form”.

On the other hand, According to Wellek and Warren stated that literature is the art of written works. Because, literature uses typical of language which is different with colloquial language or the language of science. Literature has a dual function, that is entertaining and at the same time benefit readers. Literature entertaining by presenting the beauty, give meaning to life (death, misery, and excitement) and the means to convey the message about the truth, about what is bad and good. So we can get the touch of our life through literature.

Literature is one of the greatest creative and universal meaning in communicating the emotional, spiritual or intellectual concerns of mankind. In this book, Understanding the Element of Literature, Taylor (1981:1) says that “literature is essentially an imaginative act, which is an act of the writer‟s imagination in selective ordering and interpreting life experience.”

Klarer (2004:1) says that “In most cases, literature is referred to as the entirety of written expression, with the restriction that not every written document can be categorized as literature in the more exact sense of the word.”

In his book, Introduction to Literature Razali Kasim M.A (2005:24-27) told there are some function of literature. Literature may please their listeners or readers.

Literary works may provide the readers with some knowledge. As we know, it can contain of various aspect of life such as social, cultural, moral or religious aspects, so the readers can get the lessons from it

Literary works may incite the readers to the feeling of pride of their nation or ethnic group. Literary works also may raise the readers intellect because when we read it can make us think a lot and try to imagine what the story talks about. We know that sometimes, the literary works has the hidden meaning because it used the style in writing such as symbol, illusion and etc, so we must think it.

2.2 Moral in literature

Moral comes from latin word “Mores”, which means custom and folkways.

Moral behavior means behavior in conformity with the moral code of the social group. M oral development has both an intellectual and an impulsive aspect, people must learn what is right and wrong and given explanation of why this is right and wrong (Hurlock 1985:386).

Moral is an essential need for everyone, especially teenagers. Moral is a guide for finding a teenagers identity, develop harmonious personal relationships and avoid

role conflicts that always occur in a teenage transition. A person can be considered moral if the persons behavior is in accordance with the moral values upheld by it is social groups. Morality is the one who acts based on his actions on the judgment of good and bad things. According to Syamsu Yusuf (2009:132) stated that morality is a will to accept and enforce rules, values or principles moral.

2.3 Values in Literature

The values of a culture may change, but most remain stable during one person‟s lifetime. Socially shared, intensely felt values are a fundamental part of our lives. Values are often emotionally charged because they stand for things we believe to be worth defending. Often, this characteristic of values brings conflict between different communities or societies or sometimes between different persons.

Most of our basic values are learnt early in life from family, friends, neighbourhood, school, the mass print and visual media and other sources within society. These values become part of our personalities. They are generally shared and reinforced by those with whom we interact.

Values are very important things in life. Value is also an important element in lyrics. The value of what is good and bad is important in our lives. Antony Giddens

(1995) said that Values are an idea that a person or a group has about what is worth, what is desired, and what is good and bad.

Value is a basis or reason in a behavior and attitude, whether done consciously or not. Value can also be interpreted as the nature of something that affects human life, both inward, and inner. Value are an idea of whether an action is important or unimportant (Horton & Hunt (1987).

According to Ursery, (2002:1) states that “Value is belief or attitude about what is good, right desirable, worth while and value system the ways people organize rank, prioritize, and make decision.”

Related to the contents of literary work, Amir (in Rahayu, 2005:7-8) said that

“a good literary work should have the integrity and alignment, such as an aesthetic

(cultural values), ethical (moral values), philosophical (educational values), and the sense of religious (religious values). a) Cultural Values

The values associated with the customs / traditions prevailing in the society.

As the complexity of values, culture includes various types of values. For example: truth, goodness, and beauty. Culture is also inner perfection. It can be interpreted that, the cultural values guide a person to reach the perfect life. Perfect in question is the perfection of human life as God‟s creatures, both religious dimensions, social and human person. b) Religious Values

Lathief, (2008) (in Santoso 2011:6) argues that all literature is religious. The word religious taken from Latin “Relego”, intended to “scale back” or are “concerned about (something)”. A religious can be interpreted as a human, which means, that conscience serious, devout, conscientious, and full of spiritual discernment.

Religiosity is seeing aspects „in my heart‟, moving in the deep hart, ripple vibration personal conscience, personal attitude a little much a mystery to others. Moral Values

Moral refers to what is good or bad people‟s relation to others. In other words, understanding the morality is good or bad and right or wrong. Social relationship can be judged by standards such as efficiency or produce (Sternberg, 1994:938). c) Social Values

Social value is the value of the underlying, guiding and the goal of human action and social life in the hold, retain and develop human‟s life. Social norms are rules of human relationships, which according Goeman (1992) (in Wardani, 2011:4) is a principle which underlies the human to adapt to the geographical environment, human beings, and cultural environment. It is understood that the social value is the general guidelines in the community.

2.4 Moral Values

Moral values are set of principles guiding us to evaluate what is right or wrong. Moral values help shape the character and personality of individuals. Moral values such as integrity, determination, loyalty, truthfulness, honesty, giving respect to each other etc should be inherited by every individual. As stated earlier moral

values help us distinguish between what‟s right and wrong, good or bad for you as well as society. So, as a result your decision making power improves naturally.

Wiwit Wahyuning (2003) says “When someone talks about moral values in general will be heard as attitudes and acts of each individual to the lives of others”.

Uzey (2009) also says that “Moral value is a part of value, the value that handles good or bad behavior of human beings”.

Types of Moral Values

According to Webster (1981) there are types of moral values as follows:

1. Bravery

Bravery is face (something involving possible unfortunate or disastrousconsequences) or endure (as hardship) use with self-control and mastery of tearand often with a particular objective in vie. Bravery is able to meet danger orendure pain or hardship without giving in to fear. Bravery is arising from orsuggestive or mastery of fear and intelligent use of facultiesespecially underduress.

2. Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm is strong excitement of feeling on behalf of a cause of subject, something that inspires or is pursued or regarded with ardent zeal or fervor.

Enthusiast is a person who is or believes to himself to be inspired or possessed by divine power or spirit, or a person who is visionary, extravagant, or excessivelyzealous in his religious views or emotion. While enthusiastic is relating to enthusiasm or inspired preaching. Enthusiasm is having an ardent, reception, responsive, temperament or tending to give oneself wholly to whatever engages one‟s

interest or liking.

3. Kindhearted

Kindhearted is having sympathetic nature: Humane, compassionate.

Kindheartedness is the quality or state of being kindhearted.

4. Honesty

Honesty is estimable character; fairness and straight forwardness of conduct or adherence to the fact. Honesty is freedom from subterfuge or duplicity, truthfulness, and sincerity.

5. Love and affection

Love and fell affection for. It is action of affection or state of being affected.

Affection is kind feeling tender attachment: love, good, will. Affection is a strong emotion or passion (as anger, fear orhatred); feeling aspect of consciousness (as in pleasure or displeasure); to bend of mind: feeling or natural impulse swaying the mind: propensity, disposition.

6. Loyalty

Loyalty is loyal manner. Loyalnessis the quality, state, or an instance of being loyal; fidelity or tenacious adherence. Loyal is faithful and the devoted to aprivate person; faithful or tenacious in adherence to s cause, ideal, practice or custom.

7. Peace-Loving

Peace is harmony in human or personal relation. Loving word is from love, a lover section or attitude.

8. Perseverance

Perseverance is the action or the fact or an instance of persevering , continued or steadfast pursuit or prosecution of an undertaking or aim. Perseverance is the condition or power of persevering, persistence in the pursuit of objectives or prosecution of any project. Perseverant is able or willing to persevere.

9. Sacrifice for Other

Sacrifice is something consecrated and offered to God or to a divinity or an immolated victim or an offering of any kind laid on an altar or otherwise sepresented in the way of religious, thanksgiving, atonement, or conciliation.

10. Self-Confidence

Self-Confidence is Confident in one self. Self-Confident is confident of one‟s own strength or ability.

11. Sincerity

Sincerity is the quality or state of being sincere; an expression of a sincere feeling.

12. Strong Belief

Strong is able to bear or endure; able to with-stand stress or violence; having or exhibiting moral or intellectual force, endurance or vigor. Is something believed, statement or body of statement held by the advocates of any class of views; conviction of the truth of some statement or the reality of some being or phenomenon, especially when based on an examination of the ground for accepting it as true or real.

2.5 Song Lyrics

A song may be for a solo singer, a lead singer that supported by background singer, a duet, trio, or larger ensemble involving more voices. Songs can be categorized in many genres such as : pop, rock, jazz, latin, country and many more. In song we can find lyrics. The lyrics of song are typically of poetic, rhyming nature, though they may be religious verses or free prose.

Song is one of many ways how people express their feeling and idea.

Sometimes songs are intended to express the unexpressed feeling, situation, and the unspeakable words. A song has some major elements to support the idea or the theme that will be conveyed by the singer. They are lyric, music and melody. Lyric of song are sometimes adapted from poem. It has the same structure and characteristic with poetry. Song has the same function as poetry does, because song consists of the stanzas that are sung by people.

A song is a piece of music for that come with or without voice, where the performance of song is called a singer or vocalist, the act or art is called singing.

Winkler (1990:17) says that song is a relatively short metrical composition designed for singing, often divided into stanzas, whose meaning is conveyed by the combined force of words and melody. The song, therefore belong equally to poetry and music.

According to Noor (2004:24) the lyrics are expressions of the author‟s feelings. This lyrics is now known as poetry, which is a literary work that contains

the expression of personal feelings that prioritize the way of expressing it. While the arts, especially the song, is part of the culture. Through the song, people express their feelings, hopes, and ideas, which represent the outlook on life and the spirit of the age. Therefore, through art, we can also capture the ideas.

From the opinion above, we can concluded that song lyrics is an expression of a poet from within her inward about something that has been seen, heard or experienced. Song lyrics is also a combined artwork between sound art and poetic language art, the language is short and there is a rhythm with a unified sound and the selection of imaginative words and involving melody and singers voice.

CHAPTER III DESCRIPTION OF MORAL VALUES

3.1 A Description of Moral Value in Josh Groban’s Selected Songs

As the writer explains in previous chapter, moral values are the people‟s belief about what is important in life. Moral values is a standard than can help us to determine the type of action that is appropriate and useful, whether it is right or wrong. In Josh Groban song lyrics, the writer find moral values delivered by the singer. The description is based on 7 Josh Groban‟s song lyrics, they are:

From the lyric above we can describe You Raise Me Up is a song that teaches us not to despair quickly. There are many people around us who are ready to accompany when it is difficult and able to help when we are falling. In our daily lives, we often facing problems that we can sometimes solve ourselves. But sometimes we can‟t solve it ourselves and at this moment we feel hopeless and discouraged. In this condition we need the help of others who can reawaken our spirits and mental are falling.

1. There were some moral values that found on Josh Groban‟s selected song, they are strong belief, loyalty, love and affection, honesty, self confidence, bravery and sacrifing for other.

2. The significance of moral values in human‟s life portrayed in Josh Groban‟s selected song is about love. We are living in this world with love moral that placed in our heart, love guided us to loving other people or to loving our nature. There is no human without love, however he tries to avoid love he remains in the grasp of love.

4.2 SUGGESTION

The writer hopes that the reader can describe the moral values in the other songs. The writer suggests those who are interested in literature to keep up moral value in life. Josh Groban (Joshua Winslow Groban) is an American singer, songwriter, actor and producer. A naturally gifted singer, Groban dropped out of college after only a few months to pursue a recording career.
