2017 Undergraduate Student Guide 15 Claire Schwager

I grew up on a farm near Wee Waa in Northern New South Wales. I applied to ANU because of its strong international connections and vibrant, close-knit campus community. I was excited by the opportunities to study abroad, impressive rankings, and the chance to live on campus. When I arrived I didn’t know anyone in Canberra. But I was welcomed into student societies and quickly made lots of friends. I was able to engage in a number of international exchange programs with other students from ANU and from all over the world. I’ve enjoyed so many opportunities over the last five years. Now I’m looking forward to seeing what the future holds as I begin my career in the Australian Public Service.

Major: An area within a program that allows in-depth study in a particular field. A major usually consists of a set number of related courses. Majors at ANU require 48 units.

Minor: A minor has fewer requirements to fulfil than a major, in terms of units and compulsory courses. Minors at ANU require 24 units.

Specialisation: Similar to minors, specialisations are areas of study with their own courses that can be taken in conjunction with a specific related major.

Elective: An optional area of study selected in addition to the core courses of the program. Electives may allow you to delve more deeply into an area of study, or focus on an alternative area of interest. Many students use electives to complete an additional major or minor.

2017 Undergraduate Student Guide 33 Life at ANU

34 The Australian National University My favourite class has been the Computing Group Project TechLauncher. Through this program I realised that being innovative is not a talent, but a habit or mindset that you adopt. I learned about leadership, teamwork and project development. And I've become more comfortable with networking, pitching ideas and bouncing back after failures.
