The applicant will be predominately based at the University Hospital Monklands where most of the operating sessions take place. This is a busy facial plastic practice ( tertiary referral center) with approximately 90-100 cases of open, and 20-30 internal Septorhinoplasties performed annually. Majority of the nasal deformities encountered are of a traumatic aetiology resulting in a complex cohort of patients requiring a variety of techniques in order to achieve a satisfactory functional and aesthetic outcome. A busy outpatient service provides extensive exposure to a wide variety of rhinological and facial plastic pathologies. There is also an opportunity to see major facial resections and reconstructions. The unit also does endoscopic and open nasal and sinus surgery including tumour surgery.

OPERATIVE EXPOSURE: We offer a comprehensive fellowship programme for fellows of Europe and worldwide. This will be for a period of one year. This will be fully in line with the rules and formalities of the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery (EAFPS). This will be a hands on (scrub-in) fellowship with plenty of surgical opportunities for the fellows to hone their skills in all aspects of facial plastic surgery. The fellow will be exposed to facial reconstruction for skin cancers, Rhinoplasty, Pinnaplasty, surgical (facelift and blepharoplasty) and non-surgical (botulinum neurotoxin and filler injections; laser; thread lifts etc.) facial rejuvenation. The fellows will be allowed to work both in public sector (NHS) as well as private. Fellows are encouraged to apply for funding through EAFPS fellowship programme. Unfunded positions are available and the prospective fellows are advised to arrange their funding. However, if the candidates are from the UK or the European Union and have eligibility to work in the UK, there are opportunities to take up locum jobs for out-of-hours on call covers in our university hospital and some of the local London hospitals. Candidates outside this position may have to pass the PLAB exams to follow such pattern. Candidates once successful through the interviews will have to undergo an Occupational Health check from our University Hospital before they start their fellowship. We follow a timetable wherein the fellow will gain experience from two highly qualified and board certified facial plastic surgeons who are also a part of the committee of EAFPS. In addition to clinical work, the fellows are expected to work heavily on research and be involved in publishing peer-reviewed articles. Fellows should attend the EAFPS annual meetings and other relevant meetings and are preferred to present papers in these meetings. Fellows in conjunction with EAFPS education board will have to undertake the Board certification examination at the end of a year of fellowship. In addition to full fellowship, we also offer observerships and working visits.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: We are the largest subspecialty tertiary referral unit in the UK. The work involved is exclusively Rhinoplasty, Rhinology and Anterior Skull Base Surgery with an outpatient caseload of over 2000 patients per annum. The unit performs more 150 complex septorhinoplasties and 150 sinus/skull base procedures per year (Charing Cross Hospital) with no general ENT work. In addition, 150-200 private practice procedures can be observed by the fellow in the London Clinic. The fellowship is accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons Senior Clinical Fellowship Scheme.

The candidate is expected to participate in the management of patients in the outpatient clinics and operating theatre. He/she will work as a part of team comprising the supervisor, specialist registrars and Foundation Year (FY) doctors. He/she is also expected to participate in the ongoing research and will not participate in on call duties. At least three presentations and three peer-reviewed publications will be expected in a twelve-month fellowship period. The appointee will also join in with the audit, clinical governance and teaching in the departments.

The fellowship starts every October and is advertised in https://www.jobs.nhs.uk in January/February of the same year. The candidate is expected to have obtained the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Otolaryngology or an equivalent recognized training program.
