23rd Sunday after Pentecost November 8, 2020

Prayer Lord God, heavenly Father, through the teaching of , You prepare us for the coming of Your Son to lead home His Bride, the Church, that with all the company of the redeemed we may finally enter into His eternal wedding feast; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Treasury of Daily Prayer, pg. 896.

MEDITATION [“But deliver us from evil”]. We are taught in the petition to lift up our heads, to think upon, and to desire the blessed life to come. This life is eternal where there will be full deliverance from all evil. Because we are too occupied and immersed in the matters and affairs of this world and of this life, we also request that God would inspire, excite, kindle, and preserve in us this thought and desire. The death of the godly is their deliverance from all evil and the beginning of everlasting happiness. Therefore, when we say, “Deliver us from evil”, we desire that our heavenly Father would keep us from an evil death. We ask for His deliverance so that we may not die…the death of sinners…. We ask that we may not die carelessly in our sins, unprepared without repentance (John 8:24), but that He would grant us a godly and saving end of this life. We ask to die in the Lord (Revelation 14:13). Furthermore, we pray that God would put into us a concern and desire to, in advance, be properly prepared for death. This is done because we do not want to be like those who do not have oil in their lamps when the bridegroom comes and calls us (Matthew 25:3). We ask that in the last hour of this life we may have true repentance, the Word, the Sacraments, faith, hope, and the spirit of grace and prayer. These things we ask so that when we die, we may be found in Christ. In this we rightly commend our souls into the hands of our Father. If we are found improperly prepared, we pray that He would not allow this to happen by a sudden unannounced death, but would mercifully grant us time for such preparation. We ask that our death may be a deliverance from all evil and a passage out of this vale of misery to eternal life. - Martin Chemnitz, Treasury of Daily Prayer, pg. 896.

Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination

Pastor: O almighty God, merciful Father, Cong.: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

Pastor: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Pastor: For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness. Cong.: For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.

Pastor: O LORD of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you! All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Collect of the Day

Pastor: Lord God, heavenly Father, send forth Your Son to lead home His bride, the Church, that with all the company of the redeemed we may finally enter into His eternal wedding feast; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Cong.: Amen.

Sit Readings from Holy Scripture Elder: The Lord be with you. Cong.: And also with you.

Old Testament Reading (page 768 in the pew Bibles) Amos 5:18-24 The prophet Amos foretells of the Lord’s justice and the Day of the Lord.

Woe to you who desire the day of the LORD! Why would you have the day of the LORD? It is darkness, and not light, as if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him, or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall, and a serpent bit him. Is not the day of the LORD darkness, and not light, and gloom with no brightness in it? “I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies. Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; and the peace offerings of your fattened animals, I will not look upon them. Take away from me the noise of your songs; to the melody of your harps I will not listen. But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”

Elder: This is the Word of the Lord. Cong.: Thanks be to God.

5 Epistle (page 987 in the pew Bibles) 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 St. Paul encourages all Christians to be prepared for Jesus’ second coming.

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Elder: This is the Word of the Lord. Cong: Thanks be to God.

Pastor : The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-fifth chapter.

Holy Gospel (page 830 in the pew Bibles) Matthew 25:1-13 Jesus tells the parable of the Ten Virgins in order to prepare us in faith for the Bridegroom’s return.

[Jesus said:] “The kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he answered, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

Pastor : This is the Gospel of our Lord.

6 I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

Offering You may place your offering in the plate as you exit the service.

Stand Prayer of the Church (1 Timothy 2:1-4) Pastor: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people according to their needs. That the Lord would rule over the darkness and shine His light over all the earth, that those from many nations may be united as one people through Baptism and live together in faith, by the power of the Holy Spirit. Lord, in your mercy, Cong.: hear our prayer.

9 Pastor: That the Lord would grant us wisdom and courage, that we may be prepared at all times to receive Him when He comes in His glory and that we may not be distracted by earthly glories that fade away or disillusioned by earthly disappointments, which will come to an end. Lord, in your mercy, Cong.: hear our prayer.

Pastor: That the Lord would give courage to all pastors as they preach and teach the Word of the Lord, that all those who hear may believe, and that believing, they may live in righteousness and godliness before the world and be kept to the day when Christ returns as Lord and Judge of all. Lord, in your mercy, Cong.: hear our prayer.

Pastor: That the governments of the world and our leaders would act justly and with mercy, that we may be spared war and violence, and that we may use wisely and for the Lord’s glory His gift of liberty and the abundant blessings He has poured out on our land. Lord, in your mercy, Cong.: hear our prayer.

Pastor: That the Lord would give aid and comfort to the sick, the suffering and those in their last days, that He may grant healing according to His will and strength to bear up under the weight of loneliness or affliction, we pray especially for ... Lord, in your mercy, Cong.: hear our prayer.

Pastor: That we may find a home within the house of the Lord here on earth, that we may rejoice in the Lord’s Word and Sacraments by which we are brought to faith and nurtured in this faith, and that we may be sustained in the days of waiting, serving the Lord in anticipation of His return. Lord, in your mercy, Cong.: hear our prayer.

Pastor: That the Lord would prepare our hearts by His Spirit for this Holy Communion upon the body and blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and that we may keep in holy hearts and live out in holy lives what we have received here upon holy lips. Lord, in your mercy, Cong.: hear our prayer.

Pastor: That we may be ready to receive the Lord when He comes again in glory, that the Lord may open the hearts of those who have wandered away from the faith, and that the Lord may restore those caught up in error’s maze. Lord, in your mercy, Cong.: hear our prayer.

Pastor: Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Cong.: Amen.

Spotlight on Stewardship Matthew 25:4 “… but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.” Why did they take flasks of oil with them? Because they listened to the bridegroom’s words and believed what He told them. Our actions always start with and flow from our beliefs. What do your actions in the realm of financial stewardship say about what you believe?

AROUND REDEEMER

Worship Services at redeemer will be offered in our Sanctuary Sundays and Wednesdays and available online at 8:00 AM on www.facebook.com/RedeemerLutheranHB/ as a Facebook live stream, and accessible from www.redeemer-lutheran.net. Join us in the Fellowship Hall at 9:30 AM or on Zoom at 11:00 AM for Sunday School.

Today in Sunday School the children studied “Jesus Appears to Thomas” (John 20:19– 31). We, like Thomas, doubt what we cannot see. Through His Spirit, God gives us eyes of faith that we might see Jesus in Word and Sacrament and believe in Him. Discuss with your family, “When is it hard to trust and believe in the promises of God? Who is the source of our faith?”

Breakfast Bible Study November 14th our speaker will be Rick Ritchie. The topic will be “On the Spirit and the Letter.” What does St. Paul mean when he says this? Are we to pay attention to the spirit of the law rather than the letter? Or does it mean we should read the Bible allegorically rather than literally? Great minds of the past have wrestled with such questions over the centuries. Come find out what St. Paul meant, and how Luther followed Augustine, but went beyond him in keeping the Gospel central in discussing such things. Join us for what we hope to be a spirited discussion! Please RSVP to the church office for breakfast.

Thanksgiving eve service Join us for our Thanksgiving Eve Worship Service on th Wednesday, November 25 at 6:30 PM.

Private Confession and Absolution is by appointment. Please call the church office to arrange a date and time.

Life Thoughts in the Church Year

“Maybe you enjoy showing hospitality to others, whether at home or as part of a joint effort at church. Perhaps you invite people who are lonely or people who are hungry or homeless or far away from home. Perhaps you are reaching out to refugees or to international students. Perhaps you take a casserole to a family with a new baby or buy toothpaste and toilet paper for the local homeless shelter. If so, you are showing hospitality to Jesus. What an honor to be able to do so!” Dr. Kari Vo, Lutheran Hour Ministries – A Life Quote from Lutherans For Life • www.lutheransforlife.org
