FOOTBALL: BIG SECOND HALF PROPELS BUILDERS TO SEASON-OPENING WIN Football | Mon, Sep. 14, 2020

WINFIELD, Kan. - The Southwestern College football team was victorious in their season-opener over the weekend, defeating the visiting by a score of 41- 21 from inside Richard L. Jantz Stadium.

After a long opening drive for the Bluejays was stalled on fourth down inside the Builders’ territory, the Southwestern offense used the momentum to put up seven points on their opening drive. Facing a 3rd down and long from their own 47, quarterback Brad Cagle (SR/San Diego, Calif.) found a wide-open Keyshawn Jones (JR/Dayton, Ohio) in the middle of the field, bobbling the ball a bit before hauling it in and taking it down the field the rest of the way. The 53-yard touchdown connection was good for both Cagle’s and Jones’ first career score as a member of the Moundbuilders.

The Bluejays answered right before the end of the first frame, knotting things at seven apiece heading into the second. Halfway through the second quarter, the Builders broke the tie on another Cagle touchdown throw, this time a 13-yard strike to Andre Jones (JR/Austin, Texas) in the end zone to make it 14-7. Tabor responded on their next possession on a 73-yard pass and catch, before grabbing the lead with just seconds to spare before halftime. The Bluejays led 21-14 at the break.

Out of halftime, the Builders took less than three minutes to bring that game back to a tie. On a first down just inside Bluejays territory, Cagle and A. Jones squared up for the second time, using a 49-yard score to deadlock things at 21-21. From there, the Southwestern defense took over. In the final 30 minutes of action, the Builders defense allowed just 95 total yards of Tabor offense and came away with two turnovers. More importantly, they prevented the Bluejays from putting up any more points, leading the way for the offense to string together 27 unanswered.

Southwestern broke the tie game around the five-minute mark of the third quarter, when K. Jones earned his second touchdown of the day, taking a 17-yard jet sweep into the end zone. He then went on to earn one more score in the final seconds of the third, hauling in a 57-yard pass from Cagle to put the Builders up 35-21 heading into the final period.

The Moundbuilders added to their lead once more to pad their lead in the fourth, using a touchdown run from preseason All-KCAC running back Keyshawn Wyatt (SR/Dallas, Texas) to stretch their advantage to 41-21, which proved to be the final score.

Cagle ended his night from the quarterback position 9-16 passing the ball, finishing with 249 yards and four touchdowns. K. Jones brought in six catches for 177 yards and added 18 yards on the ground as well. Defensively, Travon Crockett (SR/Dallas, Texas) secured a team-high eight tackles to go with a fumble recovery, while fellow teammates Clayton Downum (SR/Oologah, Okla.) and Marcus Richard (SR/Pearland, Texas) each earned an interception. The Moundbuilders outgained the Bluejays 502-396 despite running 12 fewer plays.

Southwestern will see their bye week come this weekend before their next contest on September 26, a home battle with the Bethany Swedes. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm from inside Richard L. Jantz Stadium.
