1. First visit KIMEP official website www.kimep.kz and select “Students”.

Every KIMEP University Student has access to its own Student Portal. Enter your ID, password (is the same as your ID) and press Log in.

VII. GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)

To calculate the grade point average in a credit based system, the numerical points for each grade are multiplied by the number of credits for the course. The results are summed for all courses included in the calculations. The total is the “Credit-Hour Value” (CHV). The Credit-Hour Value is divided by the total number of credits which yields the grade point average. The semester-based GPA is calculated and based only on grades from courses taken in a particular semester. The cumulative GPA is based on grades from all courses taken from the beginning of study. The Residence Hall is conveniently located on KIMEP University campus in the center of Almaty city. Residence Hall has space for 406 students. Living space is spread out over four floors. Study rooms on each floor are equipped with Wi-Fi internet access. To ensure the safety and security of its residents, the Residence Hall is staffed 24/7 by dedicated security personnel. Every year Residence Hall residents elect eight-member Residential Assistants Council among their peers. The Council acts as a link between students and the Residence Hall administration and organizes a range of social and sport events for Residence Hall residents. Medical Center provides medical care and emergency services to KIMEP students, faculty and staff. Medical fee The annual checkup fee is charged from all undergraduate degree students at the beginning of the Fall semester along with the tuition and student fees. The check up results will allow student attend the Sport Center Gym.

The Medical Center verifies medical certificates for absences of all students and provides medical excuses for short-term and long-term absences due to illness or injury and works with students to provide appropriate documentation. 24 Attendance (Посещаемость) Starting with the first day of classes, each student is responsible for all course work and must make satisfactory arrangements regarding any absence. Faculty members maintain a complete and accurate record on student attendance and attendance may be a part of your grade.

Academic Dishonesty Allegations which include, but not limited to cheating on a test, plagiarism, and collusion. Punitive actions and sanctions may be imposed.

Academic Year From August to July, including Fall, Spring semesters and Summer sessions.

Add and drop Add and drop period is originally designed to add and drop courses for students who are already registered. (The exact dates are stated on the academic calendar)

Advisor A person that guides the student throughout their academic career and advises the student on educational, career and transfer planning. Provides assistance on scheduling and selection of courses, registration, creating individualized success plan and academic progress.

Dean (Декан) An administrator of the college.

Deadline Time limit for completion of an assignment, by which it must be finished and submitted. No papers are usually accepted after the deadline.

Elective A course that is chosen by a student from a number of optional subjects or courses in a curriculum.

College and university faculty are ranked (lowest to highest) as adjunct, lecturer, instructor, assistant professor, associate professor or full professor. If you do not remember name of the instructor, call everyone Professor.

Receiving less than passing points, results “F” grade.

Finals Final examinations. End-of-semester course examination's in each subject, about 2-1/2 hours duration.

Financial Aid Various forms of financial assistance for students including grants, scholarships, student loans, and work-study.

A student with less than 30 credits earned.

Numerical grade average calculated on completed courses. The minimum required GPA is 2.0.

Major (Специализация) An area of concentration in a particular field of study. Usually students specialize in their majors during their junior and senior years at college.

In KIMEP University plagiarism generally means copying and submitting for course credit a sentence, paragraph, or article, without identifying or crediting the source. Plagiarism usually results in a failing grade.

27 Pre-requisite A course which must be completed prior to taking another course. Pregnant Building – (Беременное здание) Part of Valikhanov building (1st & 2nd halls are located there) Retake (Repeat) of a Course If a student receives a failing grade (F) in a course, the student may retake the course. A student who has completed a course with a passing grade may elect to repeat the course in order to improve the grade.

A standard academic term of approximately 15 weeks of instruction with one week of study breaks in Fall and Spring semesters. 10 weeks in Summer I and 3weeks of Summer II. Study - room Is a room in the university that is used for studying.

Teaching assistant Term paper (Курсовая работа) Is a paper written by students over an academic term.

Academic Credit Hours 1 Credit – 15 hours 2 Credits – 30 hours 3 Credits – 45 hours Registration System - Priority Registration – Who register first? 4th year students (107 credits earned and above) Students with a grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 or above Students with special needs have the first opportunity to register for classes The date on which registration is opened for each priority group is indicated in the academic calendar BELA students. Add and drop period The first week of the regular (Fall/Spring) semester is designated as the Add/drop period. Students can drop or add courses during this week free of charge During Summer semesters add/drop period is two days. Please remember!!!!! Some of the instructors count attendance during the Add/Drop period, once you have registered for the course, you must attend classes starting from Add/drop period. Waiting List Once a course section is full, the online registration system allows students to sign up for a waiting list Any course drop of an earlier registered student will result in the place offer for the student who is first in the waiting list, requiring student confirmation within 48 hours after approval is granted (only for freshmen). If you do not register during 48 hours, your place will be moved to the next student on the waiting list. Check your E-mail on a regular basis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Late Registration If you did not get a chance to register on time: The second week of the regular (Fall/Spring) semester will be opened as on-line late registration for any students whose semester registration is delayed for any reasons. During Summer semester Late Registration period is two days. Limited course options are available at this stage. Applications for late registration will not be considered unless first approved by the Instructor. Withdrawal Policy No more than 10 Withdraws within the degree KIMEP University Refund Schedule Based upon a 5-weeks term and is linked to the withdrawal schedule as follows: Week 2 - 80% Refund Week 3 - 60% Refund Week 4 - 40% Refund Week 5 - 20% Refund No refunds after week 5!

29 ACADEMIC POLICIES

No Refund Subsequent to that time!!!!!!!!! The grade of "W" denotes that the student has withdrawn from the course and has not completed the course requirements. Once you withdraw from the course, the grade of “W” is Automatic and the instructor cannot assign any other grade However, if the course is required then a student must take the course again in order to graduate. In order to repeat the course a student must register for the course again and pay the regular tuition fees. Appeal As soon as the final grades were submitted, student has a right to apply for the appeal within 48 hours to change a grade. Retake (Repeat) of a Course If failed or passed with a low grade, a course can be retaken (upgraded) If a student has failed the State Exam for “History of Kazakhstan” s/he must retake the course. But if a student receives a passing grade (at least D-) on State Exam for “History of Kazakhstan” s/he is not permitted to retake the course. Cheating & Plagiarism Plagiarism is a form of academic dishonesty. Plagiarism is defined as submitting someone else's work as one's own. Plagiarism occurs when a person: Directly copies one or more sentences of another person's written work without acknowledgment. Closely paraphrases one or more paragraphs without acknowledgment of the origin of the ideas. Uses facts, figures, drawings or charts without acknowledging the source. Fails to put a word for word citation in quotation marks assuming that referencing the source is sufficient (i.e. a referenced work created by “cut” and “paste”) Turns in an assignment was done by someone else.
