EDITOR'S PREFACE 'Firthlands' embraces those eastern lowlands clustered around the Dor noch, Cromarty, Beauly and Inner Moray Firths. Firthlands of Ross and Sutherland focuses more particularly on the gentle and fertile country around the Dornoch and Cromarty Firths- from Golspie and Loch Fleet in the north, to Bonar Bridge, Tain and the Easter Ross peninsula, across to Cromarty and the Black Isle, and up-firth to Dingwall and Muir of Ord. Of the twelve contrasting chapters, one provides a broad geological background to the area and highlights landscape features as they have evolved through time- the Great Glen and Helmsdale Faults, glacially deepened and drowned river valleys, raised beaches, wave-formed shingle barriers. And it is the underlying geology that gave rise to the shape of early habitational and communications networks, to the Brora coal-mines and to the spa waters of Strathpeffer, to stone and sand and gravel and peat for extraction, to the nature and balance of agricultural practice, to the oil and gas fields off the coast. Such economic activity is most apparent for relatively recent times, so that six chapters concentrate on the seventeenth to early twentieth cen turies. Some explore trade and family links across to Moray and the Baltic, as well as with other parts of Scotland and beyond; others concentrate on changes in settlement patterns, agriculture and stock-rearing, both in the firthlands and their highland hinterland; yet others are more concerned with a particularly rich architectural heritage.In each case, there is a weave between Highlander and Lowlander, spiced with the ever-increasing exposure of the north to southern influences and pressures. -

Caithness and Sutherland Proposed Local Development Plan Committee Version November, 2015 Proposed CaSPlan The Highland Council Foreword Foreword Foreword to be added after PDI committee meeting The Highland Council Proposed CaSPlan About this Proposed Plan About this Proposed Plan The Caithness and Sutherland Local Development Plan (CaSPlan) is the second of three new area local development plans that, along with the Highland-wide Local Development Plan (HwLDP) and Supplementary Guidance, will form the Highland Council’s Development Plan that guides future development in Highland. The Plan covers the area shown on the Strategy Map on page 3). CaSPlan focuses on where development should and should not occur in the Caithness and Sutherland area over the next 10-20 years. Along the north coast the Pilot Marine Spatial Plan for the Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters will also influence what happens in the area. This Proposed Plan is the third stage in the plan preparation process. It has been approved by the Council as its settled view on where and how growth should be delivered in Caithness and Sutherland. However, it is a consultation document which means you can tell us what you think about it. It will be of particular interest to people who live, work or invest in the Caithness and Sutherland area. In preparing this Proposed Plan, the Highland Council have held various consultations. These included the development of a North Highland Onshore Vision to support growth of the marine renewables sector, Charrettes in Wick and Thurso to prepare whole-town visions and a Call for Sites and Ideas, all followed by a Main Issues Report and Additional Sites and Issues consultation. -

Executive Summary The development, construction and operation of Strathy North Wind Farm has generated substantial local and national impacts and will continue to do so throughout its operational lifetime and beyond. Strathy North Wind Farm, which is based in the north of Scotland, near Strathy in North Sutherland, was developed and built at a cost of £113 million (DEVEX/CAPEX). Operational expenditure (OPEX) and decommissioning costs over its 25-year lifetime are expected to be £121 million. The expected total expenditure (TOTEX) is £234 million. During the development and construction of Strathy North Wind Farm, it was estimated that companies and organisations in Scotland secured contracts worth £59.4 million. The area is expected to secure £100.6 million in OPEX contracts over the wind farm’s operational lifetime (£4.0 million annually). Overall the expenditure, including decommissioning, secured in Scotland is expected to be £165.0 million, or 73% of TOTEX. Highland is expected to secure £21.9 million in DEVEX/CAPEX contracts and £51.5 million in OPEX contracts (£2.1 million annually). Overall, Highland is expected to secure contracts worth £77.0 million, or 33% of TOTEX. Of this, £25.6 million, equivalent to 11% of TOTEX is expected to be secure in Caithness and North Sutherland. -

AFTA data in samples of Precambrian basement and 18 Permian-Cretaceous sediments from onshore and onshore reveal multiple phases of post- 19 Caledonian cooling, viz: Triassic (beginning 245-225 Ma), Cretaceous (140-130 Ma; 110-90 20 Ma) and Cenozoic (65-60 Ma; 40-25 Ma; 15-10 Ma), all of which are interpreted at least in 21 part as recording exhumation. Basement and sedimentary cover rocks display similar thermal 22 histories, emphasising the regional nature of these episodes and implying that sedimentary 23 outliers represent the remnants of previously more extensive sequences. Significant 24 thicknesses of Jurassic rocks may once have covered northwest Scotland. -

North Coast 500 Boosts the North Highland Economy by £22Million
Press release 4 October 2019 North Coast 500 boosts the North Highland economy by £22million A major new evaluation report has found that the North Coast 500 has boosted the North Highland economy by more than £22million over 12 months. The study, conducted by the Moffat Centre for Tourism at Glasgow Caledonian University, found that the North Coast 500 generated more than £22.89million in Gross Value Added (GVA) throughout 2018. The Moffat Centre’s official North Coast 500 evaluation report, which was commissioned by the North Highland Initiative and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, also found that the iconic touring route had created 180 full time equivalent jobs in the North Highlands within the same time period. The North Coast 500 has been Scotland’s most successful route development since its launch in 2015, generating significant destination awareness and major economic benefits throughout the North Highlands. Authored by Professor John Lennon, the official North Coast 500 evaluation report also highlights an additional £13.46million in sales for accommodation, attraction, activity and retail businesses on or near the route in 2018, generated by the success of the NC500 brand. Tourism businesses throughout the North Highlands, including activity providers, tour operators, retailers, car and camper van rental firms and hospitality venues, reported a year-on-year growth of 16% over the four-year period from 2014-2018. The Moffat Centre’s North Coast 500 evaluation report also found an increase in footfall to the North Highland area had resulted in a significant boost for the visitor attraction sector over the same time period. -

These ice-directional features occur in bedrock and superficial deposits, generally below 350 m above sea level, and where best developed have elongation ratios of >20:1. Sidescan sonar and multibeam echo-sounding data from The Minch show elongate streamlined ridges and grooves on the seabed, with elongation ratios of up to 70:1. These bedforms are interpreted as mega-scale glacial lineations. All the features identified formed beneath The Minch palaeo-ice stream which was c. 200 km long, up to 50 km wide and drained ~15,000 km2 of the NW sector of the last British-Irish Ice Sheet (Late Devensian Glaciation). Nine ice-stream tributaries and palaeo- onset zones are also identified, on the basis of geomorphological evidence. The spatial distribution and pattern of streamlined bedforms around The Minch has enabled the catchment, flow paths and basal shear stresses of the palaeo-ice stream and its tributaries to be tentatively reconstructed. Williamson on the Highland Railways, and the Thurso Branch Line. Born in London “within the sounds of Paddington Station”, he spent many days in Euston Station, with a platform ticket and a lunch box, watching all the comings and goings. In 1953 he got his first camera and when on holiday in Thurso, he photographed the Station and quizzed the Station Master and that was the start of this project. He took many photographs with detailed descriptions written next to them, gathered cuttings from local newspapers and magazines, and researched other sources, as well as asking friends and retired Railway Staff for their memories.
