Important Announcements Seniors:

College Acceptances & The National Decision Deadline College Visits Congratulations to students who have already been accepted to the colleges they have applied to! Remember, do not make a decision to attend a college or send in a tuition deposit until you ** College Visits have been complete your FAFSA and receive a financial aid award letter. cancelled for the remainder Students do not need to make a decision until May 1, 2020 and of the current school year** should only submit a tuition deposit to ONE SCHOOL. Some schools have extended their enrollment and deposit deadlines to June 1, 2020. Students should check college admission websites to for information regarding enrollment and deposit deadlines and extensions. Please be sure to email copies of your acceptance letters and scholarship awards letters to Ms. Himuro.

FAFSA – Free Application for Federal Student Aid The FAFSA is now available online. Be sure to complete the FAFSA ASAP! Here are a few tips:  Create your FSA ID before starting your FAFSA. Students and parents both need their own FSA IDs. Create your FSA ID online at https://fsaid.ed.gov.  Fill out the FAFSA online at https://fafsa.gov.  Be sure you’re filling out the FAFSA for the correct school year. Since you’ll be entering college in 2020, you should be filling out the 2020-2021 FAFSA form.  Submit your FAFSA as soon as possible!

QuestBridge – College Prep Scholars Program The application for the 2020 QuestBridge College Prep Scholars Program is open. The College Prep Scholars Program equips academically outstanding, low-income students with the knowledge, confidence, and resources to apply to the nation’s best colleges. Through their partnership with 40 top colleges – including Stanford, Yale, and Duke – QuestBridge prepares College Prep Scholars to stand out in the college admissions process. The College Prep Scholars Program is open to high school juniors who demonstrate Strength in Character & Academic Achievement and Financial Need. Other Important Announcements

SAT Cancellations In response to the rapidly evolving situation around the coronavirus (COVID-19), College Board canceled the May 2, 2020, SAT and SAT Subject Test administration. Makeup exams for the March 14 administration (scheduled for March 28) were also canceled. Students who already registered for May, whose March test centers were closed, or who do not receive March scores because of any irregularities will receive refunds. Currently, the next SAT is scheduled for the first weekend of June. College Board is working with test centers and will decide whether they can safely hold that administration as soon as it’s feasible, given the evolving public health situation. ACT Cancellations The safety of students and test center staff is ACT’s top priority. ACT has rescheduled its April 4 national test date to June 13 across the U.S. in response to concerns about the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). All students registered for the April 4 test date will receive an email from ACT in the next few days informing them of the postponement and instructions for free rescheduling to June 13 or a future national test date. ASVAB Scores Students who took the ASVAB on Friday, March 6th will be able to pick up their score reports from the College & Career Center when we return to school. Ms. Himuro does not have access to your AFQT score at this time. If you would like to know your AFQT score, you can either wait until we get back to school to pick up your score report or you may see a recruiter to sign the USMEPCOM Form 680 to authorize them to pull your scores.

Girls Talk Back The Women’s Fund of Hawaii, American Association of University Women ( Branch), and Ceeds of Peace is excited to announce its second year of Girls Talk Back. In the summer of 2019, their inaugural program brought together 16 girls from across the island to uplift their voices, connect them with community mentors, and facilitate the creation of profound action plans, including plans to collect oral histories of Waimanalo residents, create student-led social- emotional well-being advisory councils, and foster open dialogue on the topic of abortion, among other plans. All girls, ages 14-18, are invited to apply for the Girls Talk Back Summer 2020 program. The Summer 2020 program will consist of two separate cohorts, each running Monday through Thursday from 9am-1pm over the course of four weeks. Applicants may only participate in one cohort: GTB-Palama: 6/8-7/2 at Palama Settlement or GTB-Waimanalo: 7/6-7/30 at Hui Malama O Ke Kai. This is a free program. Kahua Ho’omau Ola Kahua Ho’omau Ola’s goal is to help students break down barriers and give college a try at Leeward Community College. Academic and Financial support is available for those who qualify. Priority is given to students who: have NO college experience, are Native Hawaiian, demonstrate financial need, have multiple barriers that affect their ability to attend college, and will not be able to attend college without the support of Kahua Ho’omau Ola. 2020 Moanalua High School Music Booster Association Scholarship Program The annual Moanalua High School (MoHS) Music Booster Association Scholarship Program provides several scholarships to graduating MoHS seniors who are members of the MoHS Music Booster Association and have demonstrated dedication to the MoHS Music program and the fostering of its principles. Applications will be evaluated by a committee using a point scale, essay, and possibly an interview. From a pool of qualified applicants, winners will then be chosen at random on the night of the Aloha Concert. Applications are available online at http://mohsmusic.com/?p=1907. Completed applications must be postmarked by April 9, 2020.

Alpha Kappa Alpha HBCU Scholarship High school seniors on the island of Oahu who are planning to attend or has been accepted to a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) are eligible to apply for Alpha Kappa Alpha’s HBCU Scholarship. Applications are available on the College & Career Center website and must be postmarked by May 8, 2020.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Lambda Chi Omega Scholarship High school seniors on the island of Oahu planning to attend college in the 2020-2021 school year are eligible to apply for Alpha Kappa Alpha’s Lambda Chi Omega Scholarship. Applications are available on the College & Career Center website and must be postmarked by May 8, 2020.

Oahu Federal Credit Union Oahu Federal Credit Union is offering two $2,000 monetary awards to seniors of high schools within its membership jurisdiction. The applicant does not need to be a member of Oahu Federal Credit Union. Applications are available in the College & Career Center. All applications must be postmarked no later than April 8, 2020.

2020 Moanalua High School Athletic Booster Club Scholarship The annual Moanalua High School Athletic Booster Club Scholarship Program provides scholarships recognizing student athletes who have contributed to the Athletic Program at Moanalua High School. Applicants will be evaluated on their athletic achievement, athletic participation, scholarship, character, and participation in MoHS Athletic Booster Club activities. To be eligible, applicants must be a senior in good standing who has attended Moanalua High School for at least one year and who has participated in varsity athletic competition and the applicant and/or parent/legal guardian must be a member of the MoHS Athletic Booster Club by March 31, 2020. Applications are available in the CCC and must be submitted by 3:00pm on April 30, 2020 (deadline to submit official transcripts is April 16, 2020).

Harriet Bouslog Labor Scholarship Fund The Harriet Bouslog Labor Scholarship was established to demonstrate support for, as well as to commemorate the historic achievements of the ILWU and encourage greater awareness and understanding among young people about the ILWU’s economic, social, and political contributions to Hawaii. The Scholarships provides college opportunities for children of ILWU Local 142 members whose struggles made Hawaii the multi-cultural, multi-ethnic community it is today. The Scholarship is open to the family members of existing and retired ILWU 142 members. You must have applied for admission to, or be currently enrolled at, any of the 10 University of Hawaii system schools (four-year universities and community colleges), on a full-time basis. Ukulele Festival Hawaii College Scholarship Program The Ukulele Festival Hawaii College Scholarship Program is funded by Ukulele Festival Hawaii, a non-profit organization founded in 2004. Ukulele Festival Hawaii builds public awareness and interest in the ukulele as an instrument of virtuoso quality promoting Hawaii’s arts and culture through education, scholarships, and the annual free ukulele festivals. To be eligible for the $2,000 scholarship, students must: be a current graduating high school senior and resident of Hawaii, be accepted for admission to an accredited college or university, have a passion for the ukulele, and be of good character and provide meaningful community service. Lunalilo Scholars Program The Lunalilo Scholars Program gives out scholarships to students who will be attending Kapiolani Community College and have challenges/barriers preventing them from going to college. The mission of the Lunalilo Scholars Program is to provide opportunities for transformative college experiences for students who have not considered higher education as a viable alternative because of financial or other barriers limiting college access. Through scholarship, academic and personal support and community, students will build a foundation for success in the first year of college as measured by student engagement, learning, and achievement. Students of Native Hawaiian ancestry are given preference to support the College in increasing the number of Native

Summer Opportunities

UH Manoa Summer Scholar Program High school sophomores and juniors with a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA can experience college study and get a jump-start on earning credits toward their college degree, all during six short weeks in the summer. Hawaii Undergraduate Initiative (HUI) The Hawaii Undergraduate Initiative (HUI) is a program for incoming freshmen committed to attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Fall 2020. HUI strives to develop college students with a capacity for leadership. Through summer academic coursework, workshops, speakers, co- curricular activities and mentorship opportunities, HUI will prepare incoming UHM freshmen to become confident leaders on campus, in their community, and in their profession. Applicants must be (1) accepted as a Fall 2020 incoming UHM freshman and (2) available to participate in the HUI summer program July 6 – August 14, 2020. Iolani P/SAT & ACT Prep Program The Iolani Summer (P)SAT & ACT Prep course will be offered from June 15th to July 24th. 58 hours of classroom instruction, two textbooks, computer scoring services, and a unique fall review right before the actual examination are included in the cost of $690. UH Manoa Early Start Program Incoming UH Manoa freshmen can complete a credit course during Summer Session 2 and be better prepared for a full load of classes in the fall. Students will meet fellow incoming freshmen and get to know the Manoa campus through program activities. Help make their transition to college a smooth one! Medical Diagnosis and Treatment High School Program This week-long summer program for students currently in grades 9-12 provides an engaging, hands-on learning opportunity for students interested in health professions. Through gross anatomy laboratory demonstrations, clinical skills laboratories, computerized manikin simulations and standardized patient interactions, students will learn how to: describe epidemiology, signs, and

symptoms, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of illnesses common in Hawaii; perform basic clinical skills such as measuring vital signs and listening to the heart and lungs with stethoscopes; and interview and counsel patients. The program will take place at the UH Manoa John A. Burns School of Medicine in Kakaako from July 6 – 10, 2020. The fee is $500.
