The Lukhuna community has been mobilized to contribute to the demonstration scheme in form of in-kind contribution namely land as well as labour for excavation of the trenches for the pipeline.

Furthermore, a Lukhuna Irrigation Water User Association has been formed and capacity of its members built to ensure sustainable operation and maintenance of the demonstration scheme once completed. Others whose capacity has been built are the farmers who have been trained in crop husbandry, soil and water conservation on the farm, irrigation methods and gross margin analysis for horticultural crops. Other training is in value addition/ marketing of crops as well as operation and maintenance of irrigation systems.

The Sio-Malaba-Malakisi River Basin Management Project is a joint undertaking by two of NBI’s Member States namely and Uganda. The goal of the project is to contribute to poverty eradication, promote economic growth and reverse environmental degradation in the Sio-Malaba-Malakisi sub-basin.
