The source since 1870 Our children; our village The Eastern Cape seems to bring out the worst in “statistics”. There is the often-quoted statistic that ours is the poorest province in the country; and contributes least to South Afri- ca’s GDP by virtue of having rural “wastelands” like Transkei and Ciskei. However, the most alarming present-day statistics are in education. According to findings in a report presented by Eastern Cape MEC for Education Mandla Makupula last week, the failure rate among Matric pupils in the province in 2016 was 35% and 25% among 10 among Grade 10s. More alarming, however, was that one in every five children in Grade 1, or 20% of the Eastern Cape cohort failed in 2016. In total, at least 200 000 children across all grades failed that year, costing the department R2 billion, the MEC said. This, despite the fact that in the recently presented pro- vincial budget, Health and Education (the so-called apex de- partments) were allocated R23.7 billion or 75% of the entire Eastern Cape budget for 2017-18. Makupula’s revelations are contained in a national per- formance assessment report on pupils throughout South Af- rica; and come just three months after an international study shook the very foundation of the Department of Basic Educa- tion when it revealed that 80% of all Grade 4 pupils in South Africa cannot read for meaning. We should all be alarmed by these statistics as parents and relatives of children in South Africa’s public school educa- tion — more so in the Eastern Cape. Not too long ago, it was revealed in these pages that only 35% of the children who enrolled in Grade 1 in 2006 actually sat for their Matric exam St Mary’s DCC Cub Scout Pack boys educating the community on ways to save water. After an agonising 15-12 loss to eventual tournament winners, Fiji, the Blitzbokke defeated USA 29-7, to come third in the tournament. Despite this, the Blitzbokke remain on top of the overall World Series table.

World Surfers South Africa’s Michael February made full use of an injury- replacement spot in the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, causing a major upset when he defeated 2016 event winner Matt Wilkinson (AUS) in Round 2 of the 2018 WSL Championship Tour (CT). February, the first alternate for the 2018 CT season, narrowly missed out on qualifying for the elite tour at the end of last year. He was only officially notified that he was in the event when Kelly Slater (USA) withdrew last week Monday.
