  • Abel Tasman Wins the 143Rd Longines Kentucky Oaks in Front of Rain-Soaked Crowd
May 5, 2017 Abel Tasman Wins the 143rd Longines Kentucky Oaks in Front of Rain-Soaked Crowd 105,100 Brave Coldest Oaks Day Since 1940 Just Shy of Setting the All-Time All-Sources Wagering Record LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 05, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Fans braved an all-day rain and the coldest Oaks Day since 1940 as Abel Tasman captured the 143rd running of the $1 million Longines Kentucky Oaks (Grade I) at Churchill Downs Racetrack. The dreary weather, which kept thousands of fans at home, still resulted in attendance of 105,100. The highest all-time attendance record for the Kentucky Oaks of 124,589 was set just last year under perfect weather. Wagering from all-sources on the full Kentucky Oaks Day race card of $48.9 million was down only slightly to 2016's record- setting total of $49.0 million and represents the second highest all-sources wagering on Oaks Day. All-sources wagering on the Kentucky Oaks race of $14.9 million was also down slightly compared to 2016's $15.0 million. On-track wagering on the Kentucky Oaks Day race card of $9.3 million was down 22% compared to 2016. On-track wagering on the Kentucky Oaks race of $2.4 million was down 21% compared to 2016's $3.0 million. TRACK PRESIDENT COMMENTARY "Congratulations to the connections of Abel Tasman and special thanks to all of our amazing guests who braved record cold and rainy conditions," said Kevin Flanery, President of Churchill Downs Racetrack. "Today's near-record handle numbers, despite the dismal weather conditions, shows that the Kentucky Oaks continues to grow and has established itself as one of the world's most popular events.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 5, 2019 TDN Q & A: MARK TAYLOR DEBERNARDIS, WOLFE EARN ECLIPSE AWARD FOR TDN WEEKEND ON ABEL TASMAN Christie DeBernardis and Patty Wolfe have earned the Eclipse Award for Audio/Multi-Media Internet for their piece chronicling the journey of Cozmic One, first foal of champion Zenyatta, from the racetrack to the show ring through the Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) and the careful eye of 17-year-old show rider Isabela de Sousa. The entry appeared first online in the July edition of TDN Weekend, a publication of Thoroughbred Daily News and can be viewed here. The story of Cozmic One is told by DeBernardis, who came up with the idea, wrote the text, took the pictures and interviewed de Sousa on camera, and Wolfe, who shot and produced the video of de Sousa, in which the young rider extols the By Lucas Marquardt opportunity of second careers for retired racehorses and the Headlining the Keeneland January Sale this year is the 2017 success of Off-the-Track Thoroughbred (OTTB) programs. SATURDAY, MAY 6, 2017 FULL FIELD SET FOR CLASSIC BATTLE RAIN AND >ABEL= John Oxley=s Classic Empire (Pioneerof the Nile) will try to follow in the illustrious footsteps of the past two GI Kentucky Derby champions as he attempts to add to his juvenile title a victory in the 1 1/4-mile Run for the Roses Saturday at Churchill Downs. Besieged by setbacks and interruptions after claiming his juvenile crown earlier this winter, Team Casse has managed what seemed the improbable task of getting the talented yet famously headstrong colt ready to line up in the 143rd renewal of the Classic test. After putting his connections through the ringer this winter with his quirky morning antics and nagging ailments, the flashy bay seems to have finally put everything together and appears poised for another big effort following his latest victory in Oaklawn=s GI Arkansas Derby Apr. 15. • Overview Friday
OVERVIEW This year’s Breeders’ Cup races are at Santa Anita in southern California. The highlight may be the showdown between the highest earning horse in American history, California Chrome, and Arrogate who ran one of the fast races ever in winning the Travers in the BC Classic. But Friday’s Distaff is pretty exciting also with unbeaten three year old Songbird facing Beholder and Stellar Wind. There’s also the Mile on Saturday in which superstar filly Tepin tries to beat males for the second year in a row. The Turf, also on Saturday, has the filly that won the prestigious Arc in Paris last month facing top males including some pretty good ones from America. I’m going to list my top contenders, in order, for each race. The horses listed are the ones I think have a strong shot of winning. In many cases the best bet may not be the top horse. Longshots win in the BC all the time and its worth going after a few price plays. My preferred wagers are daily doubles and pick threes in which I advise using all of my listed horses in each race. These picks are made before any races are run. I will be flexible and so should you. If one trainer’s horses are over- or under-achieving, move the rest up or down. If the track seems to be biased toward a particular running style that has to be factored in as well. In other words, I might change my mind but the picks here won’t be able to be updated.
