Dear Michael

Transport Committee meeting on 2012 transport on 14 June 2012

I am writing on behalf of the London Assembly’s Transport Committee to express our disappointment that neither the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) nor any relevant TOC was able to provide a representative for our meeting on 2012 transport on 14 June 2012.

We are surprised that no one from ATOC or any of the TOCs was available to attend given the rail issues that occurred during the Diamond Jubilee weekend and the importance of rail to the transport plans for the 2012 Games. By contrast, Network Rail was able to respond positively to our request for a representative; Dave Ward attended the meeting and provided us with very useful information.

In the absence of hearing from ATOC or any TOC directly we would welcome receiving the following information in writing:  The reason(s) for running weekend-level rail services during the Diamond Jubilee weekend;  The assessment of how rail services performed over the Diamond Jubilee weekend, the main lessons learned, and the actions now being taken by TOCs in light of the high passenger demand and overcrowding at various stations in the London area including those managed by TOCs such as Norbiton and New Malden;  Any further testing of rail services that will be carried out before the Games;  If cyclists will be banned from taking bicycles on rail services in London during the Games; and  The rail service provision for Heathrow during the Games including the capacity of Heathrow Connect should there be greater demand for this service.

We look forward to receiving a response from ATOC and/or relevant TOCs at the earliest opportunity.

Yours sincerely

Caroline Pidgeon AM Chair of the Transport Committee
