The Putnam Valley School District is a leader in educa- tional technology and has been recognized both regionally and nationally for our 21st century approach to learning. This fall our 1:1 Laptop Program will have placed school- supplied laptop computers in the hands of every child from grades 5 through 12—the entire student population of both the Middle and High Schools. In addition, all District teachers have and use laptops.

The District is committed to using technology every day to enrich learning in our school programs and to prepare Putnam Valley students for postsecondary education and the workplace. The District’s Technology Committee meets regularly throughout the school year to both pro- mote and assess technology use throughout the Putnam Valley School District community, making sure that tech- nology is always employed in an effective, efficient fashion to enhance learning and improve educational outcomes.

Specific educational programs such as data warehousing and curriculum mapping use technology to record and store students’ academic data alongside detailed “maps” of the entire school curriculum at every grade level, in every building, in order to ensure that learning success is achieved in all content areas. Both students and parents at the High School have access to the online PowerSchool program which provides grades, homework, attendance records, email access to faculty, and many other features that promote interactive involvement in student success. All three campuses offer classes in choral and instrumental music, and the High School also offers courses in music theory. There are bands and choruses at all three schools, and each building's stu- dents perform musical and dramatic offerings through- out the academic year. The High School features a Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Workshop, Chorus, and Mixed Choir. Our students have competed at band competitions locally and regionally, and the Mixed Choir has performed internationally.

The Putnam Valley Music Association is a group of par- ents, teachers, and community members who support the music program in Putnam Valley. The PVMA was instrumental in bringing the Tri-M Music Honor Society to our District, and supports scholarships and programs that enhance the music education of our students.

The Elementary and Middle School art programs offer rich and varied exposure to visual arts in drawing, painting, and 3-dimensional artwork. The High School offers a complete array of art courses including sculp- ture, printmaking, and photography. Putnam Valley stu- dents regularly exhibit—and win prizes—in local art exhibits at the Garrison Art Center, the Putnam Arts Center, and the Katonah Museum. Athletics The PVCSD takes pride in its sports programs. In addi- tion to emphasizing exercise, fitness, and nutrition through our PE classes at all grade levels, Health classes in both the Middle and the High School teach about health and safety issues specific to pre-teens and teenagers. Committee on Special Education (CSE): In accordance with State law, the Board of Education must appoint a CSE to assist in meeting its responsibilities to students with disabilities. The membership on the committee includes the parents of the student, a general education teacher, a special education teacher, a related service provider (when appropriate), a school psychologist (when appropriate), a parent member, a representative of the School District and the student when appropriate.

Referrals: A student having difficulty in school will be brought to the attention of the Instructional Support Team (IST) for review. If the team, after trying to assist the student, suspects a disability, they will make a referral in writing to the Committee on Special Education. In addition, if a parent suspects a disability, then they may refer a student to the CSE for an evaluation. Referrals should be in writing to the school building administrator.

Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE): The PVCSD provides preschool programs and services for children with special needs. Parents of preschool children between three and five years of age may contact the CPSE if they have concerns about their child's social, language, speech, motor, or cognitive development. The State Education Department [NYSED] has established the following components of a sound LWP:  Establishment of goals for nutrition education, physical activity, and other school-based activities that are designed to promote student wellness;  Nutrition guidelines for all foods that are available on each school campus during the school day, with the objec- tives of promoting student health and reducing childhood obesity;  Assurance that guidelines for reimbursable school meals shall not be less restrictive than regulations and guidance issued by the federal government;  Establishment of a plan for measuring implementation of the LWP, including designation of one or more persons within the LEA or at each school, as appropriate, charged with operational responsibility for ensuring that the school meets the LPW; and  Involvement of parents, students, representative of the school food authority, the school board, school adminis- trators, and the public in the development of the LWP.

The Putnam Valley Health Advisory Council (HAC) has taken an active role (in concert with the Putnam Valley Board of Education) in developing this policy and will also remain active in implementing it and revising it annually to reflect the developing needs of our constituents.
