ABOUT TARGET AREA:

The organization has been working in Ananthapuram district of since 1996. The district is lying in leeward side of the two old fold mountain stretches of southern peninsular India. Up to 16th century this region was famous for natural resources. Forest vegetation is concerned nearly 800 species out of 18,000 of the country were available in the region. Water resources were also so sufficient that, a huge investment took place in the construction of small and big irrigation tanks, well before the advent of British Rule.

About 80% agriculture in the region is rain fed dry land agriculture which has become a gamble with monsoons. At times the impact of the uneven and untimely rainfall is proving fatal to the farmers, leading to low yields and migration. Being far from the east coast this region doesn’t enjoy full benefits of northeast monsoon. And being cut off by the high Western Ghats the southwest monsoons are also prevented from penetrating and quenching the thirst of these parched soils. Therefore this Region is subjected to drought very often.
