Favorites at Alma Professors: A handful did not care for me since I rarely went to class, but I earned A’s by showing up for the mid-terms and finals. Spanish was another matter. I attended both the 8am and 4pm classes five days a week to try to keep up, with no avail. I scheduled my oral finals for 4pm Friday before the Saturday graduation. Would I graduate from Alma where a language was required? Senior Bererra gave me a passing grade; surely my favorite professor.

When I left Alma College, I expected to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, and then the President of te United States. I entered the arena, gave it a good run and am a better amn for it.

Other memories or comments: I am very actively working as President of two nationwide veterans’ advocacy organizations, one veterans’ foundation, a veterans’ Political Action Committee, and publisher of a nationwide veterans’ publication. About 20 years after leaving Alma, with a successful career financially, I became steamed at how the government of our great country could leave so many veterans behind. I founded the first of all the organizations, the first year doing telemarketing to the white pages in the bedroom of an apartment to get a cash flow started for homeless veteran facilities in Washington, D.C. I am passionate about fighting every day for over 100,000 homeless veterans, about 800,000 veterans with some degree of diabilities from service in war zones, and because more than 22 veterans commit suicide a day. Particularly, we are challenging the Congress to exercise effective oversight on the institutional fraud within the Department of Veterans Afafirs where over one million veterans are waiting to receive word on their disability claims. A recent report of the VA’s own IG said that over 300,000 veterans died while waiting for some response. No wonder the Congress has a 90% disapproval rating by the American public. The VA and these other dysfunctional bureaucracies will not change on their own; the key is to demand that the Congress exercise its imploed constitutional authority and compel the VA and other executive agencies to do the job for the American people.

Favorites at Alma Professor: Dr. Charles Ping Class: Independent Study Place on campus: Gymnasium Friends: All the Delt Sig members Memory of campus days: Two Delt Sigs “borrowed” a church tower bell, brought it to the third-floor house sack room and rang it late one night. The bell fell off its hinges and crashed to the ground. A police officer came and asked where the bell came from. We said it’s out Alma victory bell. He said, “How come I’ve never heard it?” We said, “Because we never win.”

Other memories or comments: My Alma experience was remarkable. IT taught me how to think and how to be independent. It opened the door to a career I hadn’t expected: journalism. I started as a sociology major. My interest in social work became my hobby (mentoring through Big Brothers program), and my hobby became my career.
