2 HENLEY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 2 | WEEK 4 MOCK TRIAL COMPETITION ROUND ONE 2017 In the late weeks of term one the Henley High School Mock Trial team went head to head against Sacred Heart College, prosecuting a criminal case of shoplifting in the first round of the Law Society’s Mock Trial Competition. The competition has been organised by the Law Society since 1988 and simulates a court case in which the participating student teams contest a fictional legal matter in a Mock Court. In each round, one side acts for the plaintiff or prosecution and the other for the defence. The cases are designed to reflect matters that may confront students in their daily lives. Students are provided with a volunteer barrister to coach them in the principles and procedures of each matter, while members of the legal profession act as judges or magistrates for each round. In the second year of entering in to the competition, the new team of year 10 and 11 students were plagued with a combination of excitement and nerves on trial day. The team, who had collaborated and practiced several times before the trial, was ready to make their case acting as the prosecution. This meant that the team needed work together to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant knowingly and intentionally committed theft. This first round was held onsite at Henley High School and with an old scholar, who was the acting as judge for the round. The team was commended for our confident witnesses; who had clearly learned their roles thoroughly and recited their lines perfectly without notes. Our dedicated and diligent solicitors were recognised for their objections of ‘opinion evidence’ and our barristers were encouraged to ask open questions and were praised for their persistence and quick wit in catching the defence team’s witnesses off guard. Sacred Heart College took the overall win by eight points but left our team eager to improve and ready for their next opportunity to experience mock court. The next round will be held on the 16th May in the District Court in the Sir Samuel Way Building, Square where the students will experience a real courtroom atmosphere with a presiding judge. We wish the team success in the second round.

HENLEY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 2 | WEEK 4 RAAF EDINBURGH DEFENCE FORCES WORK EXPERIENCE On the 27th of March, I was fortunate enough to attend a week long work experience placement at the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) base at Edinburgh. During the four day course, 20 students (state-wide) including myself, visited a range of roles within the RAAF. These roles included: Air Force police, military working dogs, logistics, mechanical workshops, aircraft life support sections, aircraft maintenance, aviation medicine, aeronautical engineering, aircraft research and development, ground defence, air traffic control, intelligence, flying squadrons, flight and training simulators and a Defence Force Recruiting presentation. The main purpose of this placement was to explore a broad range of roles, careers and opportunities with the Royal Australian Air Force. I strongly recommend this work experience placement to students who are interested in a career in Defence. I definitely enjoyed my time at the base and learnt a lot from it. I will be pursuing a career in defence and this was a perfect opportunity to explore the different roles and responsibilities. It was an amazing experience being surrounded by people with the same interests as me. Thank you to Paul Nenasheff, Work Experience Liaison Officer - SA & NT with the Defence Work Experience Program for selecting my application and thank you to the Department of Defence for the opportunity.

Ria Zarogianni | Year 11

Ria accessed her Defence Forces Work Experience through the Air Force website where she found a list of all the work experience placements that were available. The placements include the Tri services; Army, Navy and Air Force. A placement is not guaranteed. Students need to complete an application and submit it before the identified deadline and will need to clearly articulate why they wish to pursue a career in the Defence Forces. If students are offered a placement they need to ensure they have completed the school’s pre-work experience program by working closely with their mentor. All necessary paperwork for both Defence and DECD must be completed prior to the placement. For further information check out the Defence website at http://www.defence.gov.au/WorkExperience/ or talk to their mentor.

8 HENLEY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 2 | WEEK 4 SA SCHOOLS AUCTION CHAMPIONSHIP For the past two months, Jordan Hawson and Adam Klem have been mentored and trained as a participant in the SA Schools Auction Championship. The schools auction program has been running for the last 11 years, and involves mentoring within the school, a group training day for students and Schools Auction Heats & Final. Jordan and Adam were mentored at school by Jonathon Kiritsis, Director of Harcourts Kiritsis Property at Henley Beach and Lindsay Warner, from Harcourts Brock and Williams. Through the training and practise Jordan has learnt about the art of selling and developed his communication and confidence when presenting to an audience. Jordan attended the heats at Pulteney Grammar where he was competing against 25 other student auctioneers, all working a crowd of buyers to sell the house in question. With cameras rolling, competing bids being thrown into the mix and judges watching every move, Jordan had to remember the legal technicalities of selling, maintaining bids in his head, adding new bids, and keeping the banter going. It was certainly a pressure situation that he handled well, and whilst he just missed going through to the final, the feedback received was very positive. “I would recommend this program to everyone because even if you don’t want a career in real estate it’s an amazing way to build up your confidence and public speaking skills. As a result of my experience this year and the benefits I can see in this for me, I will be volunteering for this in 2018”.

MIND MATTERS 2017 Over the past couple of months, the Mind Matters Action Team at Henley High School have been collecting survey data from staff, students and parents. What happens with all of that data you ask?? We’ve taken your suggestions and ideas on board and want to spread more awareness to keep you informed and up to date with what we have been working on to help improve the health and wellbeing at our site. “Only 25% of parents are aware of programs the school is running for students to develop skills to manage stress and be resilient.” Keep an eye open for a Mind Matters article in each newsletter this year to stay updated on various success stories we experience this year. One good news story from Term 1 was having The Advertiser write an article about how meditation before Maths and Science tests has helped to reduce the stress involved in every day school life, tests and exams. Well done to teacher Marina Bolic for initiating this practice into her teaching. “46% of students feel comfortable speaking to the school counsellor or wellbeing staff if they needed help.” Students can access information and support on the school intranet page anonymously in the comfort of their own home, without the negative stigma surrounding seeing a counsellor at school. They will need to click onto the STUDENT tab and then the ‘Student Wellbeing Support’ link on the far right of the screen. “Only 34% of parents felt that the school provides families with information about services and programs that help young people who may be experiencing mental health difficulties.” Did you know that you can access information on our website? There is a Wellbeing Support page that provides various links to websites for both students and parents wanting to gain more information and support, as well as a link back to the School Counsellors on site page. Click here http://www.henleyhs.sa.edu.au/section/student-services/wellbeing-support If you have any suggestions for improvement or questions of concern about mental health and wellbeing at HHS, please contact Wellbeing Coordinator, Alycia Spencer or school counsellors, Leigh Whitford and Maria Koba for further support.

HENLEY HIGH SCHOOL A PART OF HISTORY – HOSTING THE CROCKETT SHIELD On Easter Saturday, April 15, during the school holidays, Henley High School was the venue used by the South Australian Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association (SACUSA) to host an historic cricket match that has been played since 1931 against the Victorian Cricket Association Umpires and Scorers Associate (VCAUSA), the Crockett Shield. Played every two years, and hosted alternately in each state, the Crockett Shield match is keenly contested between members of SACUSA and the VCAUSA with the SA vs Victorian rivalry very evident. Previous venues for the match have been; Prince Alfred College, Adelaide High School, Adelaide Oval No. 2, British Tube Mills Oval, Sacred Heart College, Daws Road High School, Flinders University, St Peter’s College, Scotch College and now Henley High School. The cricket match itself is one part of the goodwill event over the entire Easter holiday including dinners and other social events, which include celebration for the winners and commiserations for the losers at a Presentation Dinner,. More information can be found on SACUSA’s Facebook page https://www. facebook.com/sacricketumpiresandscorers/. The Henley High School facilities (oval and special learning centre) were first rate and compared favourably with any of our previous venues, receiving many positive comments from our Victorian visitors. Accompanied by magnificent mild and sunny weather, the day was a very successful, although sadly, SA lowered its colours to Victoria in the cricket, loosing the match by 100 runs bringing the current tally to 20-18 in favour of Victoria with one draw. The Crockett Shield is named in honour of Victorian Test Cricket umpire Bob Crockett in recognition of his contribution to cricket officiating and was first presented after the second World War in 1947.

10 HENLEY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 2 | WEEK 4 CAICA CUP 2017 Thursday May 4th saw the seventh running of the Caica Cup, a whole school sporting challenge between Henley High School and St Michaels College. Named in recognition of the support the Labour Member for Colton Hon Paul Caica gives to both schools, the Caica Cup was originally created to celebrate the relationship that the two schools had. The schools have developed quite a friendly rivalry over the last few years, but it is the great spirit in which all of the matches are played that underpins the success of the day. The competition between the schools is always tough and this year was no exception. Results seemed to be very tight during the early events, however, as the day progressed Henley managed to take charge and come away with a victory with the scores 11 events to 8. This means that Henley retains the Caica Cup and takes the tally to five wins for Henley and two for St Michaels. A big thank you to the sport coordinator at SMC, Jordan Young, for helping to coordinate the event, and Mr Paul Caica for his ongoing support of both schools. Of course a huge thank you to all of the staff and students involved from both schools, as this is what the day is really about. We had over 200 students and 15 staff involved in the day, and if it wasn’t for the assistance and support from the schools administration then the day wouldn’t go ahead. Below are the scores from the day along with the participant from the winning team who was awarded a medal for being the ‘Best Player’. Scores Golf: LOSS 3 – 1 8/9 Girls Basketball: WIN 29 – 27 (Medallist – Isabella Woosnam) 8/9 Boys Basketball: WIN 57 – 42 (Medallist – John Maleza) Open Girls Basketball: WIN 68 – 25 (Medallist – Chloe Purvis) Open Boys Basketball: WIN 62 – 30 (Medallist – Matt Fauser) 8/9 Girls Soccer: LOSS 8 - 4 8/9 Boys Soccer: LOSS 7 – 2 Open Girls Soccer: LOSS 4 – 8 Open Boys Soccer: WIN 4 – 3 (Medallist – Tete Yengi) Tennis: WIN 9 – 0 (Medallist –Selina Turujla) Caica Gift Sprint Girls: WIN (Medallist – Bella Mastromihalis) Caica Gift Sprint Boys: LOSS 8/9 Boys Football: LOSS 58 – 56 Open Boys Football: WIN 76 – 30 (Medallist – Adrian Corso) Open Girls Football: WIN 66 – 35 (Medallist – Kiana Lee) Volleyball: WIN 3 – 0 (Medallist – Isla Madden) 8/9 Girls Netball: WIN 51 – 35 (Medallist – Kleo Trajkovic) Open Girls Netball: LOSS 39 – 37 Surf Life Saving: LOSS 25 – 17

JAY BARNETT Earlier this year one of our young aspiring Specialist Sports Program student athletes received a phone call that he will not soon forget. Jay Barnett, Year 11 student who has been in the Specialist Sport Soccer program since Year 8 got a call from the Football Federation Australia’s Centre of Excellence based at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. Jay had recently represented South Australia at the NTC Challenge event in Canberra and based on those performances he was offered a trial and then a full scholarship to the Centre of Excellence for 2017 along with two other South Australians. As well as a rigorous daily training program, Jay will also be completing his Year 11 studies this year at the AIS. He is looking forward to participating in the Hyundai National Youth League. Jay is the third Henley High School student to follow this elite pathway following in the footsteps of current Adelaide United player Ben Garuccio and Stefan Mauk who is now playing professionally in Holland. Jay has set some lofty goals for himself in coming years, including representing Australia at the 2020 Under 20 World Cup. Jay was back for a short holiday at the end of term 1 and dropped in to have a chat with the current crop of SSP Soccer students about his experiences at the AIS. We wish him all the best in his pursuit of a career as a professional footballer.

12 HENLEY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER TERM 2 | WEEK 4 SSP AFL UPDATE 2017 SSP AFL students have enjoyed a busy program for the first part of 2017. With the introduction of the year 8’s to our program full time, 54 students from year 8-11 have experience a lot of what the program has to offer with plenty more to come. In term 1 the key focus areas were; off-field preparation, tackling technique, game sense/skill development and speed/power training. Sean Baker (strength and conditioning coach at West ) continues his involvement from last year providing training methods around LTAD (long-term athlete development). SASMA (South Australian Sports Medicine Association) visited and ran workshops on injury prevention and nutrition. We had an NRL tackling coach visit to help our students develop correct and safe tackling technique. The major theory task for the term involved Exercise Physiology. Students analysed their fitness test results from earlier in the term and designed a training program to improve identified weaknesses regarding key fitness components required for AFL football. A highlight for term 2 has been the involvement of two AFL footballers from the Adelaide Crows Football Club. Andy Otten and Dave Mackay presented a workshop to all our students about resilience. Andy and Dave will continue their involvement throughout the year and the students are very grateful to have the opportunity to learn from two elite athletes. The students have had several games in preparation for the knockout carnivals. The open team beat Mt Michaels in the Caica Cup, while the year 8/9’s had a two point loss in a nail biting finish. The Port Adelaide Indigenous Academy travelled to Henley for a game in week 11 against our open team. We look forward to another hit out against them in week 7 term 2 for our final preparation match before our first knockout game in term 3. Later this term the year 8/9’s travel to Naracoorte for one night and a game against Mt Gambier as part our country exchange. In week 9 the year 10’s spend three nights in to gain a better understanding about what’s required at the elite level. We will visit the Essendon Football Club and the Victorian Institute of Sport, attend a Friday night AFL game at the MCG, and watch the under 18 state championship game at Etihad Stadium.
