St. Alban’s Anglican Church is the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of the Eastern United States (DEUS) of the Anglican Province of America (APA) ; part of the worldwide traditional Anglican movement. Our liturgy is rooted in the 1928 Book of Common prayer.

POSTION: MUSIC DIRECTOR (PART-TIME) We embrace the rich Anglican musical tradition that is ours. We are accustomed to vibrant congregational singing of psalms and hymns, led by choir, cantor, and organ. To that end, we are seeking a Music Director who will continue to challenge the intelligent and spiritual interest of the congregation through our musical life together.

DESCRIPTION The Music Director is responsible to the Dean of the Cathedral. As a member of the Cathedral staff, the Music Director works alongside the other and staff. The responsibilities and qualifications for the position are many, and may be considered under the following categories:

AS LEADER The Music Director is responsible for: 1. Coordinating the music for our 10:15 service, special services (Christmas Eve, Epiphany, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil, Ascension, Pentecost and Trinity Sunday) and occasional events. (e.g., Advent Lessons & Carols, Ordinations) 2. Assuming the role of lead musician (organist, cantor, or choral director); 3. Making creative choices of music and their judicious placement within the liturgy; 4. Recruiting and scheduling various music ministries (e.g., Cathedral Choir, Choristers, cantors, and instrumentalists); 5. Training, directing and supervising choirs, instrumental ensembles and cantors.

AS EDUCATOR The Music Director is responsible for: 1. Helping the parish continue to grow in its understanding of the role of music in the liturgy; 2. Helping the parish learn new music at an appropriate pace; (we currently draw from the 1940 and 1982 Hymnals, the Plainsong Psalter) 3. Fostering and developing the liturgical sense and musicianship of ministers and clergy; 4. Coordinating workshops and concerts as needed.

AS ADMINISTRATOR The Music Director is responsible for: 1. Formulating an annual music budget; 2. Timely communication of musical content for all bulletins 3. Ongoing development and maintenance of the Cathedral music library; 4. Maintaining the parish’s musical instruments; 5. Making recommendation for the purchase of instruments, sound equipment, literature, and church supplies; 6. Securing other musicians as needed for special celebrations (e.g., Christmas, Easter, etc.)

AS PERSON OF FAITH As a pastoral minister, the Music Director has the responsibility to nurture his or her own faith in order to nurture the faith of others, as well as to live in a manner congruent to the moral teachings of the Church.

AS PROFESSIONAL PERSON Commitment to professional development is a mutual responsibility of the Music Director and the Cathedral. To maintain a competent level of professionalism, the responsibility of the Music Director includes: 1. Practicing to improve or maintain skills in voice, conducting, and the instruments upon which the Music Director is expected to perform; 2. Researching, developing, and mastering new music; 3. Studying various liturgical and musical publications; 4. Membership in professional organizations and attendance at national and area conferences and workshops;

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS 1. A willingness to enter into the life of the Church. 2. Prudent balance of enthusiasm and patience, and an ability to work in collaboration with others. 3. Formation a. Bachelor’s or master’s degree in music or its equivalent; b. Musical leadership requires skills in the following areas: organ, piano, voice, and conducting, children’s choirs, with musical styles of various cultures of the community; c. A thorough understanding of Anglican liturgical theology and praxis; d. A knowledge of the history and repertoire of sacred music; 4. The Music Director should demonstrate the ability to: a. Select music that resonates with the Church Calendar and Lectionary b. Teach new music to the congregation; c. Develop the musicianship of choir members; d. Nurture musicianship of the youth;

e. Provide musical guidance in sensitive pastoral situations (e.g., funeral preparation with families); f. Lead and animate the parish’s sung prayer; g. Administer a multifaceted liturgy and music program, including planning, budgeting, scheduling and timely communication with other staff and ministers; 5. Willingness to live in a manner congruent with orthodox Christian teaching.

WORK ENVIRONMENT This position requires some evenings and/or weekend work and offers flexibility amid an unpre - dictable schedule.

CURRENT MUSICAL RESOURCES AT ST. ALBAN’S 1. Cathedral Choir consists of 20 singers, ranging in age from 14 - 82 2. Cathedral Choristers consists of 7 singers, grades 4 - 7 3. Two paid staff singers 4. Instrumentalists: several dedicated students who are studying privately and are quite capable of playing in services 5. Organ is a 3-manual Allen, with an antiphonal trumpet en chamade 6. Two grand pianos (one in each parish hall) 7. A set of Schulmerich handbells

SALARY / BENEFITS $18,000–$23,000 based upon experience and ability
