1 NEWS Year 10 students discuss ‘Brexit’ referendum Budding politicians have been taking to their soap-boxes this week as politics has taken centre stage in students’ English lessons.

Following on from the lively cross-party debate last Wednesday, in which politicians representing Labour, the Liberal Democrats and UKIP brought the EU referendum to life in front of a capacity audience in the Main Hall, Year 10 students have been putting forward their own opinions on the possibility of ‘Brexit’ in their GCSE speaking and listening assessments.

The standard of the presentations has been very high and students have responded to difficult questions on a complex issue with sensitivity and a genuine understanding of the importance of this political process. One Year 10 student stated, “After listening to the arguments, I realise that we share so many similarities in culture and ideas with Europe that I think it would be a mistake if we became more isolated by leaving the EU.”

The ‘unofficial referendum’ result from students showed that Year 10s overwhelmingly voted to stay in the EU. Reports suggest that Boris Johnson was last seen frantically cycling towards Wilmslow…

2 LZ7 visit Wilmslow! Last Friday LZ7 visited Wilmslow High School as part of their Higher Tour around schools in the Manchester area. The band works with the Message Trust to educate students about the Christian Faith and making moral choices.

During periods 1 and 2 students in Year 7 and 8 had the opportunity to listen to the band playing their latest singles and talking about being a Christian in the modern world. Other students also met the group during RS lessons, where they were able to talk about the existence of God, suffering, the Parables and other ethical issues related to their current courses of study.

The aim of the sessions were to break down pre-existing assumptions about Christian views and stereotypes, which certainly got students thinking. LZ7 will be finishing their tour with a series of concerts at the O2 Apollo, Manchester, from March 16-20. To find out more, visit: http://www.lz7.co.uk/

Year 8 students support Syrian Refugees During last half term, several Year 8 students ran a charity sale in aid of Syria Relief, one of the charities Wilmslow High School has committed to supporting during this academic year.

The students sold chocolate, crisps and drinks along with ‘Jasmines of Peace’, aiming to raise money for Syrian refugees, whose desperate plight is reported daily in the media. The students were particularly moved by the situation in Madaya, where women and their children have starved to death in horrifying numbers. The students managed to raise over £300 during the event, which has gone to support the victims of this desperate situation. 5 Spanish Exchange visit During week commencing 22nd February, 16 students enjoyed a thoroughly rewarding visit to Spain...

“The Spanish way of life is a lot more laid back that life in the UK with later lunches and later nights I could imagine my weekends being a lot more fun if I lived in Spain.

When my pen pal experienced for the first time he was in for quite a surprise. Our lunch is about 12.00-1.00pm and our tea is a lot earlier than theirs at about 5-6 ish. Our Spanish guest dealt with this well by having a nap at the end of the school day, I may start the tradition of ‘la siesta’ too!” Harrison, Year 11.

“It was definitely a change from last year, we not only attended the school and did activities with our Spanish friends but also we stayed with a Spanish family, which was just amazing!

Also this year our family hosted a Spanish exchange student and I had to speak in Spanish continuously.

I feel my Spanish speaking improved a lot. ¡Hasta pronto España!” Max, Year 12

“Living with a Spanish family was unique, it showed the difference between our cultures and the ways in which we live. It also helped me significantly in improving my Spanish speaking and also my understanding of the language. I enjoyed the trip so much that I am planning to return to Málaga in the summer to see all my friends again and to improve my “I was able to stay with a Spanish family Spanish further! which helped me to improve my Spanish a lot and I gained a better understanding I really enjoyed staying with my Spanish of the Spanish way of life. Our visit to family and equally my Spanish friend Sevilla showed me that Spain has so many staying with me, as it has given me the treasures that I need to go back to discover opportunity to make lifelong friends and to some of them. ¡Viva España!” experience a trip of a lifetime.” Vicky, Year 12 Shannon Etheridge, Year 11

Easter revision school We are currently planning an Easter holiday revision school which will run for several days in the second week of the Easter holiday. The purpose of this is to give students a supervised environment in which to revise with the opportunity to get a little help where they are confused or stuck. It is not intended to be additional teaching.

If this is something that you think your child would benefit from, and would attend, I’d be grateful if you would let us know. This would be free of charge to students supported by the Pupil Premium (we will have told you recently if your child is supported in this way), but there may be a small charge for other students to help cover staffing costs.
