Art, Culture & Social Science Paglia is not simply an art historian and commentator. She is a philosopher and social scientist. It analyzes the long term effects of television on people. The theory states that what people may view on television will determine their outlook on reality in the world. The theory was developed by George Gerbner and Larry Gross in 1975. Their research started off in the 1960s, where they analyzed people’s perception of what they saw on television, and compared it to everyday life. The theory has covered other types of media but television was the first motion visual type of media, igniting a new era of technology and media. Television erupted during this time period, as more and more Americans were transitioning from radio to television. This switch led to heavy amounts of visual media, which has demonstrated a huge mass of people confusing what they see on television and the real world. Gerbner was intrigued to find out that television formed a bond between people and television. TV was becoming an American staple, and as more and more people started watching it, a steady string of effects arose. People’s real world attitudes were changing. Visually speaking, people’s emotions and opinions were connected with what they saw on TV. The cultivation theory arose as a project titled the Cultural Indicators Project.     Behavioral Science Unit Behavioral Science Unit (BSU) was one of the original instructional components of the FBI's Training Division at Quantico, Virginia. Its mission was to develop and provide programs of training, research, and consultation in the behavioral andsocial sciences for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and law enforcement community that would improve or enhance their administration, operational effectiveness, and understanding of violent crime. The BSU was established in 1972 at the FBI Academy, and was disbanded in 2014. Through its legacy of training, research, and consultation activities, the BSU developed techniques, tactics, and procedures that have become a staple of behavioral-based programs that support the law enforcement, intelligence, and military communities. It is here where the term "serial killer" was coined and where criminal investigative analysis and "profiling" were developed. Many of these programs eventually developed into stand-alone programs, units, and centers such as the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC), Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), Undercover Safeguard Unit, Crisis Negotiation Unit, Hostage Rescue Team, and Employee Assistance Unit. The mission of the BSU was to be the premier unit for developing and facilitating relevant programs of training, research, and consultation in the behavioral sciences for the FBI workforce, including the law enforcement, intelligence, and military communities that will improve their effectiveness in furtherance of the strategic priorities of the FBI. This is accomplished through the creation of innovative bodies of knowledge in specialty areas and applied research on significant behavioral science issues for use in training and consultation in support of academic, program, and operational matters.

  • Criminal Minds, a TV Show Review
    Criminal Minds, A TV Show Review A TV show that I will be reviewing would be Criminal Minds. The show Criminal Minds was originally made in 2005 with about 15 seasons. Criminal Minds is about an elite FBI team that strategizes against criminals and tries to interpret their next move. Each member of the team uses each of their skills in order to investigate the criminals motivations along with stopping them. Some characters include Spencer Reid, Derek Morgan, Jason Gideon etc. Personally, the show Criminal Minds is very entertaining to me since the stories are always interesting along with the characters and their backgrounds. Each and every episode is different and provides an interesting story. However, season one was quite slow and it soon got interesting as the show progressed. An episode that I personally found the most interesting would be episode 12 of season 2. A character named Dr. Spencer Reid was kidnapped and tortured and he fortunately solved his way out and escaped. My favorite character would be Matthew Grey Gubler since he is very intelligent and knows how to solve his way through crimes. This shows the impact on society would be that it teaches you life skills in multiple ways. Some ways include how to analyze others behaviors by observing their body movements, body character, what they’re wearing, etc. Criminal Minds also teaches society how to escape a dangerous situation. You are able to pick up a few things from what is going on in the show and use them in real life situations. I believe that people should watch Criminal Minds due to personal benefits along with entertainment.
