THE ITALIAN TIMES APRIL 2020 – PAGE 13 Sal Purpora to receive ‘Citizen of the Year’ award from Milwaukee Chapter UNICO National by Thomas Hemman Times Editor Sal Purpora, the son of Sicilian immigrants, credits his parents, the late Francesco and Josephine (Cor- rao) Purpora, for the success he has achieved in the restaurant and restau- rant equipment business over the last 40 years.

Francesco and Josephine were im- migrants from Sant’Agata di Militello, a small town in Sicily. “They understood the value of hard work and they instilled it in their chil- dren Sal, Angie and Josephine,” Sal said in a recent interview with The Italian Times.

Today, Sal owns Papa Luigi’s, the very popular Italian restaurant in Cu- dahy, S&P Equipment, the largest new and used restaurant equipment dealership in Wisconsin, also located in Cudahy, and the always busy Meyer’s Restaurant and Banquet Hall in Greenfield, which he acquired three years ago.

Getting to the place where is he is today wasn’t easy. It took a lot of hard work, passion, and energy.

His experience working in the restaurant industry helped him open Godfathers Pizza in 1978.

From there he graduated college in 1982, while looking for a job, he found a restaurant for sale in Cudahy and purchased it. With the help of his parents, who volunteered their time and added their culinary expertise, Papa Luigi’s at 3475 E. Layton Ave. became the place to go. Customers loved Sal’s thin-and-crispy pizza, Mama Maria’s garlic bread, Sicilian eggplant, and a variety of pasta dishes and sandwiches, and the friendly people who worked there.

The restaurant uses Sal’s mother’s recipes for its marinara sauce and pizza sauce. Sal started greeting his guests with now legendary phrase “How you doin’?” He said, “We wanted everybody to feel like they are family.” He has expanded the restaurant twice and can now accom- modate 150 people. Decorating eggs for Easter is an- other tradition and it dates to the 13th century, according to some sources. One explanation for this custom is that eggs were formerly a forbidden food during the Lenten season. How- ever, since no one told the chickens, they continued to lay eggs, so they were often collected so people would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fast- ing and then eat them on Easter as a celebration. Easter is also the time for treats and it has become the second best- selling candy holiday in America, after Halloween. Among the most popular sweet treats associated with this day are chocolate eggs, which date back to early 19th century Italy and Europe. Another egg-shaped candy, the jellybean, became associ- ated with Easter in the 1930s. For the past decade, the top-selling non- chocolate Easter candy has been the marshmallow Peep, a sugary, pastel- colored confection that began selling in the 1950s. The original Peeps were handmade, marshmallow-flavored yellow chicks but other shapes and flavors were later introduced, includ- ing chocolate mousse bunnies. Sweet breads are also an Easter tradition, especially with the arrival of the end of Lent. For Christians, the resurrected Christ is called, “the bread of life” in whom believers will find their daily spiritual sustenance. In Russia and Austria, the sweet breads are often marked with a cross or image of a lamb such as the Oster- laib (Easter loaf), a large, flat, round loaf marked with the cross or an image of the lamb. In Poland and other countries, too, there is a special called the Easter baba. In Italy, the is braided with eggs, symbolizing new life. Hot cross buns are traditionally served on Good Friday prior to Easter as it marks the end of Lent and is the day that Jesus died on the cross. There is sound reason for the be- lief that the Genoa military and trade vessels were the conduit that trans- ported flea-infested rats back to Sicily and Genoa. By the time the grain cargo ships got to the home port, most of the crew had either died or had become seriously ill. From that day forward, the Bubonic Plague spread throughout Europe and became known as the “Black Death”killing 25 million peo- ple in Europe between 1348 and 1350.
