4 Women’s Volleyball 2008 2008 Season Outlook

Aminah Charles (Virginia Beach, Va.) will join Vincent and Jackson at the outside hitter position, where in 2007 she recorded 76 kills. Charles only committed 60 errors, giving her a hitting percentage of .053, and her 22 assists were the third- highest mark on the team. Charles also added 114 digs on the defensive side of the net. Middle hitter Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) will look to top her freshman campaign, where she earned Outstanding Freshman honors. Harrison recorded 213 kills, to go along with 66 digs. Senior Ese Ighedosa (Kansas City, Mo.) will look to give the Lady Pirates yet another offensive threat; in 2007, Ighedosa was second on the team averaging 2.72 kills per game. She had 267 kills overall and led the Lady Pirates with 11 blocked shots on the season. Seven of those blocks came against Alcorn State. “The sooner everyone bonds,” Gonzalez said, “the better of this team is going to be.”

Given the flux of new talent coming in, the leadership Gonzalez’s five returnees could provide will be critical to the team’s success in 2008. One such newcomer, Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta), has already signed and could become a vital part of the Lady Pirates’ rebuilding process. Four other newcomers – Lina Cordoba (Bogota, Colombia), Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel), Adriana Vazquez (Puerto Rico) and Lizeth Marquez (Juarez, Mexico) – come to give the Lady Pirates an international flavor. “We’re sort of in untested waters here,” Gonzalez said with regards to the newcomers. “We’ve really yet to see what’s going to happen. How are the newcomers going to be in the group? I’m really going to rely on the seniors to help the newcomers through, help them acclimate.” As Hampton University volleyball looks to the future, the mixture of veterans and newcomers will be pivotal if the Lady Pirates are to embark on their journey and find that with New Beginnings comes renewed success.

Women’s Volleyball 2008 47 48 Women’s Volleyball 2008 R. WILLIAM R. HARVEY is President of Hampton University and 100% owner of the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company of Houghton, Michigan. He has D enjoyed a long, distinguished, and successful career as an innovative president and educator, faithful humanitarian, dynamic civic leader, and astute businessman. A caring and compassionate individual, he has devoted his life to the elevation of humankind and the advancement of education at all levels. Through his positive example, he has taught integrity, hard work, and excellence to family, friends, colleagues, legions of students, and others. Dr. Harvey’s noble efforts have earned him respect, dedication, and recognition on the national and international scene and are reflected by the numerous awards and appointments he has received.

Dr. Harvey received his bachelor’s degree from Talladega College in 1961, and a doctoral degree in college administration from Harvard University in 1972. Upon completion of his military service, he joined the Army Reserves attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Before assuming the presidency of Hampton University in 1978, he held administrative positions at Harvard, Fisk and Tuskegee universities. Dr. Harvey’s leadership at Hampton University is reflected in the growth and quality of the University's student population, academic programs, physical facilities, and financial base. During his tenure, the student population has increased from 2,700 to over 6,300 and the average SAT score has increased by over 300 points. His commitment to expansion and innovation in academics has resulted in seventy-six new academic programs at the University including doctoral programs in physics, pharmacy, nursing, atmospheric and planetary science and physical therapy. Eighteen new buildings have also been built.

Currently under Dr. Harvey’s leadership, the University is in the process of building the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute. There are only five such centers in the United States and Hampton’s will be the largest and most advanced. Proton beam treatment is the most precise form of radiation therapy yet developed. It has little or no side effects and if the tumor has not spread, there is an excellent likelihood that it can be completely eradicated.

As a fundraiser, Dr. Harvey is considered one of the best in the country. When he became President, Hampton University’s endowment was at $29 million. Today, that endowment stands in excess of $250 million. Dr. Harvey was the first African-American to serve as chair of the Virginia Peninsula United Way Campaign and raised a record $6.6 million.

Dr. and Mrs. Harvey have contributed literally millions of dollars to worthy causes. Dr. Harvey established several endowed scholarships at Hampton University to include one for aspiring teachers named in honor of his father, Mr. W.D.C. Harvey; the Claudis P. Harvey Endowed Scholarship named in honor of his mother at Baptist Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Brewton, Alabama; the William R. Harvey Endowed Scholarship at Talladega College; and the Norma B. Harvey Endowed Scholarship at Virginia State University.

His achievements have been recognized through inclusion in Personalities of the South, Who’s Who in the South and Southeast, Who’s Who in Black America, Who’s Who in Education, International Who’s Who of Intellectuals, Two Thousand Notable Americans, Who’s Who in Business and Finance, and Who’s Who in America. Six U.S. Presidents have appointed Dr. Harvey to serve on boards and commissions.

His love and dedication to education and community is surpassed only by that for his faith and family. Married to the former Norma Baker of Martinsville, Virginia, Dr. and Mrs. Harvey have three children—Kelly Renee, William Christopher, and Leslie Denise—and three grandchildren, Taylor, Gabrielle and Lauren.
