The main aim of this catalogic work is to clarify current status of the genus in Turkey. New faunistical data are given in the text. A key for Turkish Cerambyx species is also given in the text. It has brown reddish coloration, slightly brilliant. Head is more or less salient. It is projecting, with very pronounced furrows. Antennae are variable length and long in general, the segments are either smoothed and hornlike or flattened or streamlined. The eyes are large, strongly cut away. They present strong necklines and very rude facets. The maxillary palpus has triangular last segment; tongue membranous, strongly bilobed. The protorax is rugulose, in general it has conspicuous teeth laterally. It is wrinkled or pleated from side to side. -

ABSTRACT The observations conducted between May and October 2014 in the protected area "The Forests in the Southern part of Cândeşti Piedmont" clearly show three species of protected saproxylic beetles: Lucanus cervus, Cerambyx cerdo and Morimus asper funereus. The Quercus forests, which are dominant in that area, ensure optimal living conditions for the species L. cervus and M. asper funereus, which are common species in this site. Several aspects are presented that concern the period of activity of the individuals, sex ratio, the presence of predators and the distribution map of the species. The species C. cerdo was only found on Quercus sp, and the small number of the individuals counted in the area show that the species does not benefit from favourable development conditions. A number of pressures identified make the rational management of this protected area to be extremely important. INTRODUCTION Saproxylic insects have a major role in the degradation of dead wood. Speight (1989) (in Buse et al., 2007) defines saproxylic insects as “invertebrates dependent, in their life cycle, on dead wood or very old trees”. -

Niche Partitioning Among Dead Wood-Dependent Beetles
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Niche partitioning among dead wood‑dependent beetles Jakub Horák Niche partitioning among species with virtually the same requirements is a fundamental concept in ecology. Nevertheless, some authors suggest that niches have little involvement in structuring communities. This study was done in the Pardubice Region (Czech Republic) on saproxylic beetles with morphologically similar larvae and very specifc requirements, which are related to their obligatory dependence on dead wood material: Cucujus cinnaberinus, Pyrochroa coccinea, and Schizotus pectinicornis. This work was performed on 232 dead wood pieces at the landscape scale over six years. Based on the factors studied, the relationships among these species indicated that their co‑occurrence based on species presence and absence was low, which indicated niche partitioning. However, based on analyses of habitat requirements and species composition using observed species abundances, there was no strong evidence for niche partitioning at either studied habitat levels, the tree and the microhabitat. The most likely reasons for the lack of strong niche partitioning were that dead wood is a rich resource and co‑occurrence of saproxylic community was not driven by resource competition. This might be consistent with the theory that biodiversity could be controlled by the neutral drift of species abundance. Nevertheless, niche partitioning could be ongoing, meaning that the expanding C. cinnaberinus may have an advantage over the pyrochroids and could dominate in the long term. The karyotypes were classified in relation with the ratio heterochromatin/euchromatin total amounts and the amounts of heterochromatin on autosomes and gonosomes were compared. The C-banded karyotypes of 19 species, representing characteristic profiles are presented. This analysis shows that there is a strong tendency for the homogenization of the size of the peri- centromeric C-banded heterochromatin on autosomes. The amount of heterochromatin on the X roughly fol- lows the variations of autosomes. -

The great capricorn beetle or Cerambyx longicorn (Cerambyx cerdo, Linnaeus, 1758) is an internationally protected umbrella species representing the highly diverse and endangered fauna associated with senescent oaks. For the conservation and monitoring of populations of C. cerdo it is important to have a good knowledge of its microhabitat requirements. We investigated determinants and patterns of C. cerdo distribution within individual old, open-grown oaks. Trees inhabited by this species were climbed, and the number of exit holes and environmental variables recorded at two sites in the Czech Republic. Distribution of exit holes in relation to height above the ground, trunk shading by branches, orientation in terms of the four cardinal directions, diameter, surface and volume of inhabited tree parts were investigated.
