CURRENT GRANTS:

An RCT of Brief Intervention for Problem Drinking and Partner Violence 1R01AA018705-01A1 Funder: NIAAA 07/01/2010-06/31/2015 Role: Rhodes (Principal Investigator 25%) $2,715,476.00 Goals: We propose a randomized controlled trial with 600 women ED patients who self-disclose co- occurring problem drinking and intimate partner violence to assess whether a brief motivational intervention can decrease primary outcomes of episodes of heavy drinking and incidents of IPV. The brief 20 minute manual-guided intervention, which will be monitored for fidelity, will be delivered by trained social workers at the time of the ED visit, followed by a 10 minute phone booster at 10 days, as this is a model that could be generalizable to other urban EDs around the country. Status: Impact Score=17 (2%) , approved for funding July 2010, pending Notice of Grant Award

RC1MD004415-01 Community Health Center Intervention to Prevent Family Violence Role: Principal Investigator (20% effort) $1,000,000 Funder: NCMHD in response to the specific Challenge Topic, 09-MD-103: Initiating Innovative Interventions to Prevent Family Violence. Goals: We propose a large scale demonstration project that will evaluate the impact of an innovative multi-level intervention on partner violence detection and rates of referral to social work. In addition, a pilot treatment study will assess the feasibility of implementing a future large randomized controlled clinical trial to test the effectiveness of the multi-level intervention when combined with community- based family health advocates for improving outcomes for abused women. Both studies will be conducted in 4 Philadelphia Department of Health community health centers serving approximately 50,000 low income primarily minority patients.

Measuring Pediatric Access To Specialty Health Care By Insurance Status Role: Principal Investigator (10% effort) $418, 000 The proposal is a collaborative project with the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services with an overall goal of identifying and assisting in the correction of any barriers to access specialty health care for children insured by the State of Illinois. The proposal involves a two phase study, conducted over two years, that will involve gathering both quantitative and qualitative data that will inform the development and conduct of an audit study to assess the success of the state’s efforts to provide equal access to subspecialty care for children < age 18 residing in Cook County who are publicly insured through the Medicaid system compared to privately-insured children.

Social Emergency Medicine Funder: 1675 Foundation, (3-15-2010- 3-14-2013) $$150,000 Role: Principal Investigator 1% effort Goal: To refine and implement Promote Health, a patient self-administered Social Health Survey to as part of the routine electronic medical record. The computer-based survey will provide an on-line patient health risk assessment that includes the social health survey questions, as well as collects information about patients’ current symptoms and family history. Ideally patients could complete this before their health care visit with the option of sharing the results with their ED and/or primary care provider. Regardless of their decision to share the results, patients will receive requested health information and referrals in ways that are patient-centered and address patients’ needs.

Victim Participation In Intimate Partner Violence Prosecution: Implications For Safety NIJ, 2006-WG-BX-0007: $498,726 direct costs, 10/01/2006 – 8/30/2010 Role: Principal Investigator: Rhodes (20% effort) Agency: National Institute of Justice Goal: This project merges justice system and healthcare system data to examine the impact of victim participation on risk of re-victimization, measured both within the civil and criminal justice systems (subsequent IPV-related 911 calls, arrests, petitions for civil protection orders), and within the healthcare system (use of ED services).

R0-1 HS11096: "A RCT of Computer Screening for Domestic Violence" Role: Co-Principal Investigator, (PI, Howes) Rhodes 50% effort Agency for Health Research and Quality. The study enrolled over 800 women patients at two emergency departments to evaluate the effectiveness of computerized assessment to increase identification and rates of domestic violence discussions and disclosures of domestic violence. Funder: Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. $1,031,581. Project period: 9/30/00–8/31/03.

K23 MH64572 Identifying and Responding to Male Partner Violence $853,685 7/01/02- 6/30/08 Role: Principal Investigator: (Rhodes 75% effort) Agency: National Institute of Mental Health Mentored career development award. Mentor(s): Emil Cocarro, MD Univ. of Chicago, Paul Crits-Christoph, PhD Univ. of Pennsylvania, Dept. of Psychiatry. The overall goal of this research plan is to study a methodology for effective screening and identification of male perpetrators of partner violence and to collect the data necessary to develop an effective clinical response that can be portable to other health care settings.

The Impact of Spatial Autocorrelation on Factors that Predict Intimate Partner Violence Arrest Decisions Principal Investigator: K Rhodes (3% effort) Agency: National Institute of Justice: $35,000 Goal of this study is to use two existing national criminal justice databases (NIBRS and LEMAS) and the Area Resource File to examine the impact of incident-level factors, local law enforcement characteristics, and community-level factors associated with police decision to make an arrest or not in cases of intimate partner violence, using GIS analytic techniques to control for spatial autocorrelation. Strategic Planning Process to Build an Interdisciplinary Research Infrastructure and Program Focused on Improving the Quality of Emergency Care and the Health of the Community: Funder: School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania Internal Grant: $8000 Principal Investigators: Karin Rhodes, Jesse Pines, Sanford Schwartz. Goal: This grant supports a process that draws on the methodological expertise and differing perspectives of the biomedical sciences, , and social sciences to build a health services research infrastructure in the field of emergency and community care. Project period:

Grant with the Institute for Safe Families Funder: First Hospital Foundation, K. Rhodes Role: Principal Investigator (project funds only) Goal to design, administer, and analyze a project to determine the effect of patient self-report (computer screening, patient written self-report and/or audio-tape) on provider-patient DV communication and DV identification. The results will then be compared to past chart audits completed by ISF to determine whether face-to-face screening or patient self-report produces more DV identification and response for patients attending PDPH community health centers. In addition, a number of key informant interviews will be conducted with Health Care Providers to gain qualitative data on the feasibility and sustainability of patient self-report and provider response. Project period: Page 16
