WINNIPEG SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA | ANNUAL REPORT 2019/20 | 13 EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Daniel Raiskin mentors at the RBC Canadian Conductors Showcase.

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra maintains a strong commitment to creating exceptional musical experiences for Manitobans with a comprehensive series of education and community engagement programs and initiatives. In 2019/20, we welcomed RBC Assistant Conductor Naomi Woo (left), who became principal conductor of nearly all education programs throughout the season. Naomi immediately began to make her mark by bringing a unique perspective, unending enthusiasm, a tremendous ability for relationship building and a deep level of care for everything she does, to WSO’s programming.

Students of all ages engaged with the WSO and deepened their connection to orchestral music through participation in one of the WSO’s many education programs or concerts. While the year did not end in a way anyone had planned or hoped, even as quarantine set in, we were able to continue supporting the work of educators and building connections with students through new digital initiatives, many of which will continue through 2020/21.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS The WSO’s commitment to connect with and engage students at all ages continued with a broad series of signature education programs designed to engage and excite students of all ages with the WSO and live orchestral music.

The Bach to School program, composed of seven ensemble groups from within the orchestra sections – string, woodwind and brass – visited 17 schools; reaching over 5,250 students from kindergarten to Grade 8. Bach to School has a strong reach to many communities including inner-city, suburban, elementary, junior high and high schools and reinforces students’ engagement with the WSO in preparation for or as a follow-up to a WSO concert experience.

Nursery Notes is an innovative program specially designed to engage preschool-aged children. A WSO string ensemble shared presentations in 10 different nursery schools across Winnipeg and engaged over 310 children with music and instruments through interactive activities. STUDENT STORY | RYZA RUEDA Sistema Winnipeg strives to provide students with lessons and values that help them achieve their full potential in society. This year, Ryza Rueda not only continued as a Sistema student and Winnipeg Youth Orchestra participant, she also worked in the WSO office two days per week in the role of Sistema Assistant. A student at Maples MET School, Ryza chose Sistema for her workplace internship to learn what happens behind the scenes in administration. During her internship, Ryza reorganized the string inventory and helped create a system that was both more efficient and cost effective.

WSO Composer-in-Residence and WNMF Co-Curator NEW MUSIC Harry Stafylakis welcomes audiences to the festival. FESTIVAL Once again, the Winnipeg New Music Festival JANUARY 25–31, 2020 (WNMF) showed the country why making our city a destination spot in the middle of January is a great thing! WSO Music Director Daniel Raiskin curated this 29th festival with WSO Composer-in-Residence Harry Stafylakis, whose own music was heard along with hosting programs and providing support to the composers present.

This year’s festival was honoured with the presence of distinguished composers Michael Daugherty and Sarah Kirkland Snider. On the opening night, Snider’s symphonic Hiraeth kicked things off along with Daugherty’s searing Fire and Blood, which featured the return of Canadian violin virtuoso Alexandre Da Costa. WSO Composer-in-Residence Harry Stafylakis rounded out the program with Sun Exhaling Light, a scalding musical response to the epidemic
