While competitors such as Prada and Marc Jacobs were still experimenting with e-commerce in 2010, Burberry let customers order clothes directly from its runway shows as it streamed them live online. Burberry invests more in its digital business than other luxury companies, consultant L2 Think Tank estimates, and it has more Facebook fans than its top rivals. Burberry is also the only luxury-goods company that lets clients order online and pick up their purchases in stores. Burberry’s strategy has resonated with consumers and investors. In the year ended March 31, 2002, the company had pretax profit of £85m ($141m) on sales of £499m. In 2013-2014, analysts predict earnings will reach £449m on revenue of £2.33bn, according to the average of 19 estimates. Since 2002, its shares have surged more than 500 percent while the Bloomberg European Fashion Index has more than tripled. Burberry reports annual results on May 21. Don’t expect to see the rest of the luxury-goods industry rush to combine the creative and business roles as Burberry has, said Michael Boroian, president of recruiter Sterling International in Paris. Bailey “is a special case” given his extensive experience with the company, Boroian said. “I don’t see it as a trend.” While some creative directors such as Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz and Celine’s Phoebe Philo have increasing influence on commercial decisions, their clout corresponds to the success of their collec- tions, said Boroian. Still, creative and image director Hedi Slimane oversees all strategic projects at Saint Laurent and stamped his authority on the brand by dropping “Yves” from the label’s name in 2012, though the fashion house has a separate CEO. And jeweller Van Cleef & Arpels last year widened creative director Nicolas Bos’ roles to include CEO. In the less rarefied world of sporting goods, Nike CEO Mark Parker started out as a footwear designer in 1979. Like Bailey, Parker didn’t have any board-level experience before taking the top job in 2006. Nike shares have gained more than 250 percent since Parker’s appointment. “We have come a long way from seeing designers as a necessary evil,” said Fabrizio Ferraro, a professor at IESE Business School in Barcelona. Bailey is one of “a new breed of designers who are more business-friendly.” WP-BLOOMBERG France’s odd couple push Europe to re-think growth BY MARK JOHN and audience - including other EU “Make no mistake - Michel to review the matter of its deficit Montebourg’s promotion It is a case that could be eas- LEIGH THOMAS capitals, the financial markets Sapin is the French Wolfgang promises. and that of hard-leftist Benoit ier to make this year than in and the French themselves - end Schaeuble,” French official spin French observers see Hamon to education minister the past: France is now likely to ne is a balding, bespec- up still unsure of where France doctors texted journalists as Montebourg’s remarks as clearly are intended to show the Socialist have an ally in new Italian Prime tacled safe-pair-of- is heading. details of Valls’ line-up begin calculated to play up Paris’s defi- rank-and-file that there is a Minister Matteo Renzi, who has hands known for his Sapin is a no-nonsense politi- to leak last week, referring to ance of austerity policies to a counterweight in government to signalled he will use his six-month Onegotiating skills; the cal fixer whose hobby is collect- Berlin’s finance supremo. home audience of Socialist law- Valls, whose centrism is often lik- presidency of the EU starting in other a firebrand orator of the ing antique coins. NEW DELHI: Sacked England batsman Kevin Pietersen (pictured) regrets his fall-out with former skipper Andrew Strauss and still harbours the dream of becoming the first English player to score 10,000 Test runs. Prolific and polarising in equal measure, the 33-year-old South Africa-born strokemaker’s inter- national career was cut short after nearly a decade at the crease this year after England’s Ashes white- wash in Australia. Pietersen, who was involved in a text messages scandal in 2012 that soured his relationship with Strauss before being “reintegrated” into the side, was sacked in February as England sought to “rebuild” team ethic after the 5-0 series loss. However, on a visit to the Indian capital, the 104-match veteran appeared optimistic of one day returning to Test cricket despite being dumped for a perceived lack of team spirit, although neither he nor England have revealed the exact reasons for his exit. “Yes, maybe I’ll still get to 10,000 (Test runs),” Pietersen was quoted as saying by the Indian Express newspaper yesterday. The top order batsman, who has scored 8,181 Test runs at a 47-plus average, appeared contrite over the 2012 scandal, when he reportedly sent South African players critical text messages that targeted Strauss Pietersen said he did not care what the English and his team mates. media had to say about him. “Andrew Strauss is a great friend.
