Education matters…

“You are the salt of the earth; You are light of the world” (Matthew 5:13-14)

We are living in a time of paradox and superficiality. There is plenty of Education but a scarcity of equal opportunities, abundance of resources but lack of equal distribution and availability of talent, but the challenge of right utilization. Therefore Education Sunday is a time to ponder on our own contexts. We need to ask, 'does Education matter or make a difference for us as a community, as a society or as individuals?' Is Christian education a priority for us in church? Along with Education, we are celebrating the life and witness of women in our communities. Moving ahead with the 'Care for the Elderly' is another important emphasis in our future ministry in the church. Has Education resulted in the liberation and empowerment of women? In essence, I believe Education matters, because it mattered for our Lord Jesus Christ. The ministry of Jesus Christ can essentially be understood as a ministry of education, leading, guiding and empowering people, disciples, communities, leaders and individuals. Jesus was an educator of influence, impact and inspiration. The ministry of Jesus was a comprehensive and wholistic ministry, because Jesus taught, proclaimed and healed (Matthew 4:13).We are educated but find it difficult to live out the values that we have learnt during the process of education. In the words of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, 'Men are mortal'. So are ideas. An idea needs propagation as much as a plant needs watering. Otherwise both will wither and die.

One of the most illustrative texts of education in the Bible is the Sermon on the Mount. Summarizing the beatitudes, Jesus calls us to be “The Salt and Light of the World.” The words to note is “You are,” which is for the present and here. It is not “You will be.” The key words in the Sermon on the Mount are “Blessing” and “Righteousness,” which tell us while this is an expectation, it is also an ethical mandate for us. We become the salt and shed light by doing what is right through our words and actions. By being and doing, we are partners in God's Kingdom which celebrates the values of Justice, Peace and Love. In his homily for the canonization of

1 Mother Teresa, Pope Francis called her an 'icon of God's mercy' and went on to say, "For Mother Teresa, mercy was the salt that gave flavor to her work, it was the light which shone in the darkness of the many who no longer had tears to shed for their poverty and suffering.”

As we also begin our preparations for the Harvest and Thanksgiving next month, I am excited and looking forward to my next event in terms of learning and celebration.

Mission & Evangelism Team 14 “Care for the Elderly” Report on the One-day Retreat for the Elderly

A One-day Retreat for the Elderly was organised on Thursday, the 15th of August 2019, at the Ecumenical Christian Center, Whitefield. The Retreat themed 'One Family in Christ' was attended by 43 elders. It was a very good day where every participant felt the need for stronger fellowship in Christ, and also the need to walk closer to God and dependence on God. Before proceeding to the Retreat Venue, all the participants took part in the Worship Service of the 73rd Independence Day led by our Presbyter, Rev. Dr. Dexter S. Maben, followed by Flag Hoisting. After fellowship over Breakfast, the Group proceeded to the Retreat Venue. The

15 Convenor for the “Care for the Elderly”, Mr David S. Soans, welcomed the gathering. Then our Presbyter, Rev. Dr. Dexter S. Maben, started the Day's Programme with a brief message based on 1 Samuel 1: 12-19. He explained the role of the Elderly in the church and the need for staying closer to God. After Coffee Break, Pastor Sunil Raj and Mrs. Juliet Sunil Raj from Campus Crusade for Christ led the Morning Sessions based on the Word of God and on the theme 'One Family in Christ'. Pastor Sunil Raj focussed on the mind-set – setting our minds on the things above (Col. 3:2); put on the armour of God (Eph. 4:22); count others better than ourselves (Phil. 2:3); to humble ourselves in the service of God; importance of harmony in family relationships and resolving indifferences in the family; and the need for elders to think of the legacy that they will leave for the younger generation. The Group then gathered for a Group Photo Session, and then had fellowship over Lunch. The Afternoon Session was handled by Dr. Dominic Benjamin, HOD, Geriatric Department, Bangalore Baptist Hospital. He explained to the participants on 'Healthy Aging' in this challenging world. He stressed out the point that how important it is to live a 'life of fullness' by trusting God, following a healthy diet, regular exercise, and to enjoy the moments in life. He also stressed the need to maintain 'health' in old age by regular and healthy food intake, rest, exercise and having good relationship with family and society. Dr. Dominic explained about the 'health warning symptoms' and also the nature of 'old age health issues', and the need to plan for a 'healthy and joyful phase of life' when we get old. Be childlike and not childish was a very impactful point to the audience. The Volunteering Team conducted Group Games during the evening Coffee Break, and also gave out the return gifts for the participants. The Feedback Forms were gathered, from which it is understood that there are many suggestions from the Group on how to take forward the activities of the “Care for the Elderly” Some key feedback/suggestions are: · More fellowship gatherings for elders · Form a WhatsApp Group to be aware of each other's prayer needs · Have a separate account-head for managing the “Care for the Elderly” related initiatives · Area Leaders to stay in touch with elders in their Areas · Willingness to participate in the Committee for “Care for the Elderly” · Pastoral care and attention for “Care for the Elderly” · Concierge support for elders

16 The Group returned back to church, and on their return a memoire of the Group Photo was distributed to the participants. All participants felt it was a wonderful day of fellowship, spiritual nourishment, bonding and growing as “One Family in Christ”. Convener, “Care for the Elderly”
