1 FROM OUR DIRECTOR, DR. MATT WAPPETT This past year has provided many challenges and opportunities, but the CPD has continued to thrive, writing more proposals and bringing in more funds than any other research center on the USU campus.

Like everywhere else, the challenge of responding to the COVID pandemic has occupied the majority of our time and has forced us to adapt and evolve. Since over half of our employees work in locations outside of our home base in Logan, Utah, the shift to remote work for everyone was not a major challenge. CPD staff members live and work in 17 different U.S. states and in various communities throughout Utah. The COVID pandemic has helped our virtual staff feel more engaged with the CPD as a whole.

CPD staff response to the COVID pandemic has been exemplary, and we have discovered new tools and processes that have enhanced our overall productivity and growth. The most valuable thing we have learned through this public health crisis is that we can continue to function and grow in spite of the challenges posed by the pandemic. In some cases, we have found the transition to online work and services to be more inclusive and effective for both our staff and the clients whom we serve.

For example, our early intervention program transitioned to a telehealth model early in the pandemic response. There were some initial misgivings about the ability to maintain the quality and fidelity of our services using virtual visits, but after several weeks we found the feedback from clients and staff was universally positive. The virtual interactions required parents to be more hands-on and our staff to be much more intentional about their role as a coach and support to the family. In the end, we have found that we can still meet the needs of our clients, collaborators, and colleagues in spite of the challenges posed by the COVID pandemic.

In spite of the COVID pandemic, we have also continued to invest time and effort into refining our overall organizational strategy. One of the primary organizational challenges that we face is creating coherence among the diverse programs and staff at the CPD. Last year we housed 156 different projects funded through 237 different grants or contracts. Although this diversity in programming is incredibly valuable, it also poses some key challenges related to coordination and collaboration. To help address this challenge, we implemented a new accountability framework using Objectives & Key Results (OKRs) to guide our efforts. These Objectives & Key Results (OKRs) have been extremely useful in providing some overarching performance targets that cut across our various divisions, programs, and people.

Our 2020 OKRs include: 1. Increase the CPD’s ability to achieve our Core Goals and improve the lives of the people we serve by increasing our annual leveraged funding to $25 million by 2022. 2. Demonstrate a 25% increase in diversity in our staff, leadership teams, partnerships, and people we serve. 3. Increase awareness of the CPD’s impact and importance at the college, university, state, and national levels. 4. Create a more inclusive and interactive workplace culture that bridges the gap between on-site and remote employees and ensures that all employees feel connected and have the support they need to fulfill our mission.

These objectives and measurable key results are helping us create greater collaboration between our many programs, while also helping us build a more inclusive and sustainable workplace culture. Our Core Focus areas will remain healthcare, mental health, transition, employment, personnel development, and , and we will continue to develop and maintain programs in these six high need areas. We are also constantly looking ahead for emerging needs and opportunities.

It continues to be a tremendous privilege to work with our talented team here at the CPD and I am grateful for their ongoing commitment to excellence. Although we are bombarded daily with new challenges, I firmly believe that the CPD is a force for good in the world, and that we are bringing inclusion, opportunity, hope, and healing to the lives of thousands of children, adults, and families who might otherwise be overlooked or forgotten. This report is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our staff and it demonstrates that a small, committed group of people can make a difference! COMMUNITY ADVISORY COUNCIL
