She does have some points, but no one actually bothers to check facts, which often, at best, are suppositions based on maybes. No one really knows what is real. She is Jewish. She had a husband and a child and switched teams to be a lesbian. She is a “self-styled” environmentalist. She has a master’s in fine arts in creative writing from Columbia College--a degree that is likely integral to her environmental presentations which are more lacking in reality and loaded with wishes and high hopes than most realize. It’s time she was retired from this type of public life and given the opportunity to spend her time on creative writing properly labeled. Third on the ballot, is Kari K. Steele, 36, whose qualifications are that she has risen through the political ranks as a political worker, She speaks in meaningless populist slogans with no real substance. Fourth is Patrick Daley Thompson, a nephew of Mayor Daley. He is a successful attorney and is extremely intelligent. He really believes in cleaning up the environment, but unlike many of the others, when he speaks to the superintendents and engineers at the MWRD, he is capable of recognizing their expertise, absorb and learn. He’s a good man and President O’Brien highly recommends him. Patricia Young, fifth on the ballot, a former MWRD commissioner for 17 years, left office for a MWRD desk job in 2009, but has thrown her hat back in the ring. She has a master’s in public administration from IIT and has great familiarity with the real life workings of the MWRD. President O’Brien has a lot of respect for her and so do we. Last is Commissioner Patricia Horton, whose political sponsor, A bar association that gives the candidate an NE, means Not Evaluated through no fault of the candidate and that tells you the bar association was not present for the Marty Levinson interview. Candidates who choose not to appear are penalized going forward. It usually indicates that the candidate feels he is not going to get good ratings and is dodging “The greatest barber in them. the history of barbers” Almost all members of the Alliance are special interest groups and invariably have some built in prejudice. The exception is the Illinois State Bar Association, who are just plain not as thorough Avy Meyers as the Chicago Bar Association. North Town News Magazine The Cook County Bar Association would seem generic, but are given no special respect by the JLC. The following have obvious interests: The Asian Bar Association, the Black Marty has a new location Women’s Lawyer Association, the Decalogue Society (Jewish), Hellenic Bar Franks’s Barber Shop, 6201 W. Touhy Association, Hispanic Lawyers Association, Lesbian and Gay Bar Association. Puerto Kitty Corner from the Target Rican Bar Association and the Women’s Bar Association. The Chicago Council of Lawyers is highly thought of by many and are more 773-610-9268 thorough than most. Their prejudice is so-called liberal or progressive candidates. I have yet to hear a JLC member rave about them unless their politics are similar to the Council. For the purpose of my evaluation, I give the Chicago Bar Association more weight than all the rest. There are two other groupings, the Decalogue Society because this is a Jewish publication and the sum total of the ratings of the other ten members of the Alliance. A number of judges are appointed. If they lose an election, they are often reappointed if they have proper political pull or if they are quality judges. Individual members of the Supreme Court do the appointing and they take turns. The new rules are that if they lose an election they will not be reappointed. Appointed judges gave up their old jobs, be it a partnership in a law firm or a governmental position as a prosecutor or public defender. Those not elected will be jobless with no guarantee of employment. That is why so many are running because they were all told they will not be reappointed unless elected. A third category is Associate Judge. When certain openings occur all vested judges at a certain level vote among a number of pre-selected candidates and the winners becoming associates. That is a life time job, though they don’t have quite the full benefits of an elected judge. The salary is about ten-thousand dollars smaller and they don’t get to vote for associates. I don’t know what all the differences are, but those two seem the most important to the JLC. There are some associates running against people whose careers are on the line and there is a selfishness to that, I am not fond of. Many of those of those on the line are older and are legitimately concerned about their futures. I often interviewed a half a dozen or more judges for a TV shoot and topped out at ten and fourteen. ב"ה tannenbaum chabad house Over time the JLC has been more comfortable - northwestern jewish center ty including me in their conversations and I learned a presents: r de Pa lot. Reyes and Garcia barely edged Sampen with the Alliance and the Decalogue Society gave their highest rating only to Reyes. ● Partner at Grund & Leavitt, P.C. My vote goes to Judge Jesse Reyes with Judge Boyd a close second. ● Adjunct Professor of Law at IIT/Chicago-Kent School of Law Cook County Circuit Court Uncontested races in the circuit court and the subcircuits will not be addressed. ● Formerly, Judicial law clerk for the Illinois Appellate Court. The CBA and Decalogue Society rate them equally and Reddick has the edge with the Alliance. My vote goes to Judge Erica Reddick. The O’Brien vacancy Cynthia Ramirez who has the endorsement of the Cook County Democratic Party, takes on Gerald V. Cleary. I interviewed Ramirez. The JLC did not talk up either one. The CBA gave Cleary it’s highest grade and found Ramirez qualified. They both got the highest marks from the Decalogue Society. Ramirez has the best grades from and Maloney a qualified. The Alliance gave Propes two high marks and one not reccommended. Maloney got a Highly recommended from The Decalogue Society. I got to see Propes impugn me publicly. She called to apologize the next day. I like Ed Maloney a lot and he is my clear choice in this race. The Simmons vacancy has three challengers Michael Forti, Jessica O’Brien and James Wright. It’s funny how in some races I’ve interviewed everybody and heard tons about them and in others, nothing. All I have to go on here are grades. Michael Forti gets the highest marks from the CBA. O’Brien has passing grades across the board and the Hispanic bar group rate Wright highly and the African Americans gave him a thumbs down. My vote goes to Michael A. Forti. The Stewart vacancy. Seven candiates Pamela Leeming, Terrence Jordan, www.pauliegroup.com Deidre Baumann, Mary Margaret Burke, Sammy Lacey Jr., Rhonda Sallee and Steve Demitro. I interviewed Leeming, Baumann and Sallee. Political Consulting This is another race where I didn’t get much buzz from the JLC. New Media Leeming is the only candidate with passing grades across the board, but non were high grades. Burke got a passing grade from the CBA and flunked the Online Identity Management entire Alliance. Jordan, Lacy, Demitro and Salle failed to get a single passing grade. In Salle’s case it was lack of experience. Baumann who is Jewish had the second highest marks and has had members of the Decalogue Society stick up for her. The Law Office My vote goes to Deidre Baumann. of The Ward vacancy is the final county wide race. I interviewed two candidates and had contact with a third. The field contains Alfred M. Swanson, Denise Marie Nalley, Elizabeth Mary Hayes, Joan Marie Kubalanza, Peter J. Vilkelis and Brian J. Stephenson. In the JLC, Swanson and Vilkelis are well liked. James P. Nally, P.C. Grade wise, Swanson, Kubalanza, Vilkelis and Stephenson have very close to the exact same grades. Eight South Michigan I interviewed both Swanson and Vilkelis and liked them very much; but I Suite 3500 have a clear choice. Peter J. Vilkelis gets my vote. Sixth Subcircuit Beatriz Santiago, Mark Ferrante, Gregory Emmet Ahern Jr., Carlos Claudio, Kent Delgado and Ricardo Lugo comprise the field. I interviewed Claudio and Ferrante. No JLC buzz worth reporting. Ferrante got the highest marks from the CBA and the Decalogue Society. Ahern got also got an HQ from the CBA. Ferrante wins the Alliance big time. Mark Ferrante, who has serious ties to the Jewish comnmunity is • Complete Graphic Service my clear choice in the Sixth subcircuit. Quality Offset Printing Eighth Subcircuit • Chiola vacancy - Rodney Stewart, Judge Celia Gamrath, Judge James Digital Color Printing Shapiro and Thomas Osran • The JLC clearly likes Shapiro, he is very popular and highly Bindery & Finishing thought of. Gamrath is respected. • The CBA gave both Shapiro and Gamrath HQ’s. Shapiro also got an HQ from the Decalogue Society. The Alliance mildly favored Shapiro over Gamrath. Thomas Osran is Jewish and got good grades across the board. Stewart did well with everybody but the council. I interviewed Shapiro and Stewart and had some contact with 5746 N. WESTERN AVENUE Gamrath. Shapiro, is a clear pick. Stewart and Ganrath could have been CHICAGO, ILLINOIS 60659 endorsed in the right field. TEL.: 773.561.9815 Cole vacancy - Brad Trowbridge, John Ehrlich, Gideon Abraham Baum, Judge Helaine “Lanie” Berger, Judge James L. Kaplan and FAX: 773.561.0714 Ellis Levin. The JLC really likes Judge Kaplan who is presently filling the slot [email protected] for this vacancy. There are four Jews in this race and that is a crime. There are plenty of other races they could have chosen. Ellis Levin is not well liked and Judge Berger who is an Associate with a lifetime job created resentment by running against the popular Kaplan who is up in years and is caring for a special needs child. Ratings: John Ehrlich edges the rest, Kaplan got good grades across the board, Berger got low grades from the CBA and the council. Brad Trowbridge lacks experience, but that can be obtained. Judge James Kaplan is a clear choice in a slam dunk runaway. Roy vacancy - Judge Deborah Jean Gubin, Sharon Finegan Patterson and Judge Nicholas Geanopoulos. Judge Deborah Jean Gubin, is very well liked and respected. She got the only high grade from the Decalogue Society and easily wins the Alliance. Patterson has slightly better grades than Geanopoulos who passing grades from every one. Judge Deborah Jean Gubin who is Jewish, has the best grades, if I lived in the eighth, I’d vote for her. Ninth Subcircuit Bender vacancy - Judge Michael Ian Bender versus Judge Lionel Jean Baptiste. The JLC loves Bender and thought the world of his father. They both have done pro bono work for Nazi hunter Simon Weisenthal’s as his personal lawyer. I can’t begin to tell you how many non-Jewish judges tried to butter me up by talking up Judge Michael Bender. When he worked for the village of Skokie, he made sure that every indigent Jew who passes away was taken care of by the Jewish Sacred Society and arranged for a proper Jewish burial for all who had the need with Chicago Jewish Funerals. He has close relationships with a number of area Rabbis, I could go on and on. Judge Baptiste is a very fine individual and I like him. His ratings are a bit lower than Bender’s but he gets all passing grades. He is very popular with the Evanston crowd where he was alderman and works very hard at everything he does to get where he is in life. There a lot of races where he would be my choice, but I can’t think any judicial race that is more important to me than this one. My vote goes to Michael Bender and I would choose him over every single other judge on the ballot. He is the single most important endorsement in this publication. Epstein vacancy - Judge Mary Trew, Abbey Fishman Romanek, David C. Adams and Judge Larry Axelrood. My least favorite candidate in this election is Abbey Fishman Romanek. She used the facilites of the office of the Attorney General of … ! Illinois to do political work for Dan Seals; She got caught and was told to resign or be fired. There is more, but why bother. No thanks Abbey. David C.Adams is a really good lawyer who t&YQMBOBUJPOTPGUIF.JTILBO works with former Judges and brilliant legal minds, Marv Leavitt and Alan Greiman. BOEJUTWFTTFMT QSPDFFEJOH He gets poor grades because his experience UISPVHIFBDIWFSTFJO1BSBTIBT is in the Appellate courts and not the sort of 5FSVNBI UIFMBTUWFSTFTJO trail cases he would encounter by winning a circuit court slot, but it’s obvious the CBA 1BSBTIBT5FU[BWFSFHBSEJOH thought highly of him. UIF(PMEFO.J[CFBDI BOE I think the world of Mary Trew’s legal ability. UIFWFSTFTJO1BSBTIBT,J4JTB A lot of lawyers think very highly of her. She always get good bar ratings and takes her work SFHBSEJOHUIF,JZZPS very seriously. She belongs on the bench. In Larry Axelrood I am presented with a t5IF$IVNBTIXJUIUSPQ dilemma. He is an associate and is guaranteed UPHFUIFSXJUI0OLFMFTBOE a job. Yet the JLC thinks the world of him; he 3BTIJ XIJDIFOBCMFTUIFSFBEFS has far and away the highest grades, does some incredibly noble deeds and is Jewish. UPCFNBBWJSTFESB I really hate picking anybody over Mary t"O&OHMJTIUSBOTMBUJPOPGFBDI Trew, especially an Associate, but I have to pick Larry Axelrood in this race.
