Medomak Middle School-- 7 Information About Medomak Middle School (MMS)

After-School Activities If students participate in after-school activities beginning right after school, they may not leave the school and then return. If a student is a spectator at an after-school activity, that student must have parental permission, or they must take the usual route home and return when the activity begins.

Coaches or advisors are responsible for students involved in an activity from dismissal until the activity is over. Parents are responsible for transportation arrangements as soon as the activity is over. Students who cannot arrange for transportation at the end of the activity may be considered ineligible to participate for the next activity. Watch the weekly newsletter and schedule of events, which will state the starting and finishing times for games and/or activities. Athletes who have a practice scheduled to begin 4 p.m. must go home and come back for their practice time.

Announcements Announcements will be made in the morning and afternoon each day to all students and teachers.

Arrival at School Students should not arrive at school before 6:45 a.m. unless brought by bus. Parents are asked to help enforce this.

Attendance MSAD#40/RSU40 will make every effort to promote and ensure regular attendance. Students are required to attend school 175 days. When a student is absent, parents must notify the school by phone or in writing. Daily attendance of all students will be closely monitored. If a prolonged absence is foreseen (for example: family vacation, family hospitalization), please contact the office as soon as possible. Otherwise, these absences will be considered unexcused. Ten unexcused absences or seven consecutive school days in a year will meet the definition for habitual truancy. The district has a policy in place for habitual truancy, which is available at msad40.org.

Make up When a student is going to be absent for two or more days, homework may be requested through the office. Please make requests for homework prior to 9 a.m. The homework may be picked up after 2 p.m. that day or, if requested, we will send the homework home via another student of the parent's choice.

Tardiness Arrival after 7:35 a.m. is regarded as tardiness. Continual tardiness will result in parent contact.

Cell Phones Cell phones are to be turned off when students enter the building. If they are on or in use during the day, they may be confiscated. Teachers may ask students to turn cell phones in at the beginning of the period and be returned at the end of the period.

Medomak Middle School-- 8 Community Studies This is a special end of the year experiential learning program. Further information will be sent home during the last trimester.

Conferences/Teacher Contact Communication between staff, parents and students is encouraged and supported. Although annual conferences are held in November, parents, teachers, or children should feel free to schedule a conference at any time throughout the year. Please call the school to make arrangements for an appointment with your child's teacher. Teachers can communicate easily with parents via e-mail. To email a staff member: [email protected]

Daily Assignments and Homework Daily assignments are an indication of how well students are doing in school. Parents should review the papers brought home. If there are questions or concerns about the work, parents should contact the teacher(s). Students’ grades will be updated on Infinite Campus at least weekly.

Homework is a necessary and valuable part of the middle school experience. When used as formative assessment it gives students, parents and teachers valuable feedback on student learning. It should promote good study and work habits for students without overwhelming them, or having an undue influence on their grades. As a cooperative venture, students, parents and teachers each have a role to play in making homework a productive part of the students’ experience. As part of this partnership, students, parents and teachers all have roles to play in supporting our students’ success.

Students are expected to: do their best to complete their homework as assigned, communicate any concerns to their teachers and ask for extra help as needed.

Parents are expected to: provide a consistent time and place for students to do their work, communicate any concerns to their student’s teacher first and then to administration, stay informed regarding student progress via Infinite Campus or communication with teachers.

Teachers are expected to: provide homework that is consistent with the parameters below and communicate any concerns to students, parents and administration; provide time after school on a regularly scheduled basis for assisting students. This after school time will be posted in classrooms.

HOMEWORK PARAMETERS: TYPES: Practice learned skills Prepare Reflect on previous learning Complete an assignment started in class Read Study for a test or quiz Continue project work Elaborate, Extend, Enrich FREQUENCY: 3-5 times per week

Medomak Middle School-- 9 TIME: Up to 120 minutes per night of inclusive of all subjects WEEKENDS: Not regularly assigned, but could be one of the 3-5 days mentioned above HOLIDAYS/VACATIONS: No NEW homework assigned during school vacations PROJECTS: Projects should be largely completed at school. Students may need to continue working on a project outside of school. WEIGHT: Homework will be part of a balanced assessment of student learning. Teachers may opt to use homework as formative assessment. ABSENCES: Students are responsible for making up missed assignments. Individual accommodations will be made to prevent an overload on students who have been out of school for excused absences.

Exceptions to this policy will be approved by the administration and/or teaching staff involved on an individual basis.

Dances Dances will be held on designated evenings from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Students exhibiting inappropriate behavior will not be allowed to attend the next dance and other disciplinary action may be taken.

Those eligible: * 7th and 8th grade students in good standing with our school. Those ineligible: * Students absent from school the day of the dance. * Students who have overdue library books of more than one week. * Students who are on the discipline ladder. Admission: * The usual price is $3.00/person; refreshments are available at an additional cost. Students will: * Behave appropriately following the general school rules at all times. * Wear clothing that conforms to the school dress code. * Arrive no earlier than 6:45 p.m. and leave no later then 9:15 p.m. * Remain off MMS school grounds if they are not attending the dance or are ineligible. MMS school grounds are separated from the MVHS campus by the exit road to Manktown Road and the access road to the sports field behind MMS. * Remain in the school building during the dance.

Guests A student may bring a guest to the dance. The guest must be a 7th or 8th grader and the name must be given to the principal five school days prior to the dance. The principal or designee will call the guest's school to determine if the guest is eligible. If guests are in good standing both behaviorally and academically at their school, the guests may attend the dance. Students may not bring a guest to the 6th/7th grade transition dance.

Medomak Middle School-- 10

Parents may be called to pick up their children if problems occur, and the student may forfeit the privilege to attend dances for the remainder of the year.

Dismissal, Sign-out Procedures End-of-day dismissal begins after announcements. All students will remain in their classrooms until after announcements. Parents wishing to remove any child from school during the school day must go to the office and sign their child out. Parents are asked to wait in the lobby area for their child(ren). For the childrens’ safety, students will be dismissed only to those people listed on the emergency card unless the child’s parent otherwise notifies the school.

Parents picking up their children at school park in the parking loop in front of MMS closest to the road, then enter the school to pick up their children. The driveway in front of the school will be closed except for emergency vehicles. MMS students may not walk across to the MVHS student vehicle parking lot. MVHS students transporting their MMS siblings must come to the middle school to pick them up.

Dress Code What is worn in school often influences behavior and attitudes. Failure to dress in an appropriate manner will result in a request to cover the offending clothing and not to wear it again. A phone call to parents may occur and as a last resort, an office referral may be issued. The school does not allow the following: * Clothing that has holes or is torn * Spaghetti strap or other tank tops * Crop tops or other such garments that expose bare skin around the midriff. * Extremely tight, short or revealing clothing. * Hats, bandanas, or hoods worn in the building. * Exposed undergarments. * Pajamas and slippers. * Footwear or shoes deemed unsafe. * Shirts, jackets, or other garments bearing writing or images that are suggestive, vulgar, obscene, distracting or inappropriate to school health teachings or rules. * Apparel that advertises any drugs, including alcohol or tobacco. * Chains and aerosol sprays are not allowed in the school.

Fashion and fads change frequently; the staff may identify other items as they present themselves.

Electronic Devices Radios, tape/cd/mp3 players, laser pointers, DVD players, pagers and cell phones, as well as gaming, BlueTooth, or wireless devices of any kind, are not to be used during the school day without permission. Misuse of these items will result in the item being confiscated. Parents may come to school to retrieve the item at a later date. The school will not be responsible for the safety of these items. It is recommended that students do not bring expensive items to school. These items may get lost, broken or stolen and can disrupt school.

Medomak Middle School-- 11

Emergency Cards Please make sure the school office is made aware of any changes in addresses, cell phone numbers, home telephone numbers, work telephone numbers, etc. that may take place during the school year. The office personnel rely on the information that is provided, and it is imperative that it be accurate in the event of an emergency involving your child.

Energy Drinks Energy drinks are prohibited in school.

Enrichment Activities Involvement in a variety of programs contributes to a student’s success in Middle School. Please refer to weekly newsletters for upcoming opportunities. Some examples include: MATHCOUNTS, GreenThumbs, after school art, student council, drama, Destination Imagination and yearbook.

Field Trips Parents will be notified of and give permission for all field trips. Information will be sent home prior to each field trip, which will outline the details of the trip. Students without parental permission will remain at school and continue with academic work. There will be a blanket permission slip for Community Studies.

Fire Drills There will be eight or more fire drills each year. The fire exit plan is posted by the door of each classroom and should be memorized. Students will be held responsible for knowing how to exit any classroom. In order to have a safe and orderly drill, students are to remain absolutely quiet during a fire drill. Students are to obey all directions given by the staff, and are to be serious during a drill. Inappropriate behavior may result in disciplinary action. A separate Crisis Plan is established and practiced.

Food Services Program This program encompasses a breakfast mod before school starts and during morning break and a lunch mod during the center of the school day. Students may buy a hot lunch or bring a cold lunch. Students bringing a cold lunch will store it in their locker until lunchtime. Milk, water, and juice are available to cold lunch students. Lunch is eaten in the cafeteria under the supervision of adults. There are approximately 22 minutes scheduled for lunch. Snacks are also available for purchase daily during break.

Payment and cost Students will pay for lunch in a process similar to MVHS. To pay for lunch, students will enter the lunch serving area, then proceed to a check out register and pay in cash or debit their prepaid account. The cost of a student lunch is $2.25 (reduced price $.40). The cost of a student breakfast is $1.10 (reduced price $.30). Once an outstanding balance of $10.00 or more has been reached parents will be notified and unless payment is made, students will receive an alternative meal that usually consists of a peanut butter sandwich and milk. Students may not charge Ala-Carte items.

Medomak Middle School-- 12 Prepayment made by check payable to “MSAD#40/RSU40” will be credited to the student’s individual account. The student may deposit their funds with lunch staff any morning in the cafeteria. Parents wishing to make lunch account payments on line or who want to view their child’s transactions can do so by creating an account on “mynutrikids.com” (see district website, MSAD#40/RSU40.org). However, there is a transaction fee for each payment made.

Free or reduced Due to Federal guidelines, students are not allowed to swap, sell, or give lunches away. All students who qualify by federal guidelines may be served free or reduced cost lunches. Applications and information pertaining to this program are available in the office and are distributed at the beginning of the school year to all students. It is extremely important to return completed applications as soon as possible.

Menu A monthly hot lunch menu is available to all students at the beginning of each month, posted in the weekly newsletter and also posted on the school’s website.

Recycling Medomak Middle School participates in a recycling program during our lunch mod. Students are asked to separate their trash before discarding: single-stream recycling, bottle recycling, and trash. We separate leftover food items for our compost bin. Students volunteer to dispose of these items in appropriate containers at the conclusion of lunch.

Grading System Medomak Middle School students must demonstrate adequate academic progress before being promoted. MSAD#40/RSU40 communicates a student’s progress in multiple formal formats; teacher conferences, end of term report cards and midterm progress reports. Students and parents can monitor progress via Infinite Campus over the Internet. If a student has not shown adequate progress during the school year, he/she may be required to attend summer school to complete requirements for promotion.

In grades 7-12 the following grading system is used:

A 93-100 B 85-92 C 77-84 D 70-76 F below 70

The elementary schools use a different grade scale with a below 60 representing failing. At times, this can be a major adjustment for 7th grade students and parents.

Honor Roll * High Honors: All As in all subjects * Honors: All As and Bs in all subjects

Medomak Middle School-- 13 Parent Teacher Communication Parent / teacher communication is encouraged to insure the success of your child at MMS. Before/after school meetings, phone conversations, email communication and by the formal fall parent teacher conference are all encouraged.

Infinite Campus Infinite Campus is our student information system. This is a wonderful tool to view the school bulletins, current grades, and other important information. Middle school parents and students may access assignments and grades to check academic progress at any time. Generally, a teacher will update student’s grades weekly. Students have their own passwords for access. Parents have a “unique parental password” and options not available to students. Parents should contact the office for a handout with directions for access to Infinite Campus.

Report Cards and Midterm Progress Reports (Trimesters) Report Cards are issued three times a year. Please reference the calendar on page 2 of this handbook for specific closing dates. Report cards will be given to the students approximately one week after the close of the ranking term. Midterm progress reports are issued approximately halfway through each ranking term. These reports are given to the student; they are not mailed.

The report cards/midterm progress reports will serve as a notice of the quality of work being done in school. Parents are encouraged to notify the school indicating they have reviewed their child’s report card.

General School Rules 1. A pass is always required outside the classroom except at lunchtime, break, or when the entire class or student body is involved. Late passes are to be written by the teacher sending the student late to class. 2. Books and duffel bags will be of normal size and must fit easily into the student’s locker. These bags are only for transporting materials between school and home, not from class to class during the school day. 3. If a student requires special consideration for bathroom or elevator privileges, a note from home or a physician is requested. 4. Student traffic in the corridors and on the stairs should always keep to the right. Single file on the stairs is a must. 5. Individual classroom rules will be established by teachers, explained fully to all classes meeting in that room, and enforced by teachers at all times. 6. No gum chewing or candy consumption by students is permitted during normal school hours unless permission is given at a location. 7. Students must remain within the building unless permission to leave has been given by the office, the principal, or his/her designee. 8. Laptops will be checked periodically to ensure they do not contain any inappropriate software or files. District-wide filtering is in place, however, Internet histories may also be checked periodically. The computer may also be reformatted/imaged. 9. Any time computer privileges are revoked, the student continues to be responsible for completing any assignments using other materials. If necessary, schoolwork may need to be made up in an after-school session.

Medomak Middle School-- 14 We reserve the right to adjust and/or modify these rules at any time.

Harassment/Hazing We believe that students should give and receive respect. MSAD#40/RSU40 has a harassment policy and a hazing policy, copies of which can be found on the MSAD#40/RSU40 website or in the main office.

Library The library is a resource center and is open to all students. Students will be admitted to the library only with a pass. Students can sign out books for a two-week period. All books may be renewed with the librarian's permission. Students are responsible for returning books in the same condition as when checked out. Loss or damage to a book is the financial responsibility of the student who signed out the book. Reference books and magazines will be loaned at the discretion of the librarian. The librarian or another authorized person is responsible for checking out books. No books should leave the library without authorization. Books being returned should be placed in the "return box". Students with overdue library materials will not be allowed to check out other materials until they have returned the overdue materials.

Lockers Each student will be assigned a locker and private combination. The lockers will be the responsibility of the student for the entire year. Students are advised not to “rig” their lockers. This allows anyone access and can result in lost items. Lockers are the property of the school and are subject to inspection at any time.

Medications If medication must be administered during school hours, the child’s physician as well as the parent/guardian must complete the form entitled “Authorization for Medication(s) to be Taken During School Hours”. This form can be obtained from the school office or at MSAD#40/RSU40.org. In order for school personnel to administer any medication, whether it is over-the-counter medication or prescription medication, this form must be completed by the physician and returned to the school. In addition, the medication must be in the original container and clearly labeled with the name of the student, name of the medication, name of the physician, date of original prescription and instructions for administration.

It is requested that parents bring the student's medication to the office where it will be kept in a locked closet and administered by school personnel. Parents must also be aware that MSAD#40/RSU40 School District does not have a registered nurse at each school.

Parents are encouraged to come to the school to administer medication to their child if it is at all possible. It is the intent of the Health Office that medication be administered to students at school only if no other options are available.

Also available is the opportunity for parents to sign a consent that would allow their child to receive, from MSAD#40/RSU40 stock medicine, up to three doses of either Tylenol 650 mg., or Ibuprofen 400 mg., as needed, per standing orders. Standing orders are applicable at only Medomak Middle School and Medomak Valley High

Medomak Middle School-- 15 School. The consent form will be sent home at the beginning of each school year or a copy can be obtained from the school’s heath aide or office staff.

Newsletter and School Notices Every Thursday a newsletter and schedule of events is available for all families. Paper copies of the newsletter will be sent home with those students whose parents have requested a hard copy. In addition, the newsletter will be posted on the school’s web site. Parents and students are encouraged to read the newsletter to stay abreast of activities. School Notices are available via Infinite Campus in the “messages” section or the school’s website.

"No School" Announcements In case of bad weather or other emergencies, a "no school" decision will be made as early as possible. The "no school" announcement will be made over the following radio and television stations:

Smoking and Drugs Tobacco, drugs, and alcohol are not allowed on school property. It is against the law to use or possess drugs and a violation of school policy for a student to appear on school property, or at any school-sponsored activity, under the influence of drugs. If it is believed that a student is using, carrying, selling or transferring drugs, his/her desk, locker and all personal property will be searched. This procedure is described in the

Medomak Middle School-- 16 MSAD#40/RSU40 Policy Manual in the Foundations & Basic Commitments section, policy ADC.

Special Education Services A variety of services are available for qualifying students. Any questions can be directed to Karen Etheridge, Director of Student Services, MSAD#40/RSU40 Educational Service Center @ 785-2277.

Video and Audio Recording In this era of technology there are ever increasing uses of video and audio recordings in our schools. Video and audio may be used to document and demonstrate student learning. The district web site, teacher’s web site or student’s web site may at times provide access to forms of documentation of student learning.

In some instances parents may wish to exclude any video or audio of your child appearing on web sites. A release form is provided with first day materials. If parents do not return this permission form, their child will not appear in any audio or video releases.

Volunteers, Parents, and Guests All volunteers and visitors must sign in at the office and wear a volunteer/visitor tag before proceeding into the building. We would like to invite you to join us to help provide opportunities for the students. Volunteering is a rewarding experience; together we can make a difference. For further information, please call the school at 832-5028. We look forward to hearing from you.

Medomak Middle School Comprehensive Discipline Program

The Medomak Middle School Comprehensive Discipline Program was established in conjunction with the MSAD#40/RSU40 Code of Conduct, see page 26. This discipline program has not only increased instruction time, but also has helped foster a safer environment for our students. The comprehensive discipline program, known as “The Ladder”, is very thoroughly laid out and should be reviewed by both students and parents over the course of the year.

It is vital that students, staff, parents and administration are consistent with the ladder. It is also imperative that the school has parental support behind decisions rendered. We realize parents and students may not always agree with the decisions, but it is our hope that respect is given and consequences are supported. Without that support, our efforts to provide a safe and effective learning environment are greatly compromised.

Principles of the Discipline Program

1. All students deserve to be educated in a safe, secure, orderly and respectful environment. 2. All students are responsible for the decisions they make and need to be held accountable for their behaviors. 3. All students deserve to have their long-term good behavior honored, their misbehavior discouraged and any serious or repetitive misbehavior disciplined. Medomak Middle School-- 17 4. All students deserve the right to due process, which includes an opportunity to hear the evidence against them and a chance to explain their point of view. 5. All members of the school community bear responsibility for creating a safe, secure, orderly, and respectful environment.

The Ladder Students always start the year on step zero of the disciplinary ladder. As students break school rules, they increase their time on the ladder. If a person maintains 5 straight school days without a referral, he or she moves back down the ladder one step. The time period for moving down the ladder may be shortened by the administration if the student takes positive steps toward self-improvement such as participating in counseling or community service activities. Example: Two hours of community service or two hours of counseling may reduce the time by five days. This must have prior approval by administration. If a student commits an offense that has a recommended consequence such as fighting or threatening, he or she is moved up immediately to the corresponding step on the disciplinary ladder.

Procedure for Staff / Classroom Procedure (Prior to Office Referral) Teachers are asked to exercise all reasonable options to correct any behaviors that fall short of our expectations. This includes: verbal warnings, informal consequences, calls to parents, and teacher / team detentions. Forms will be provided for record keeping purposes.

Procedure for Staff (Office Referral) When a staff member has attempted all of these and finds it necessary to make an office referral, a record of previous attempts is attached to the office referral and forwarded to the office. At this point, the student will move from step 0 to an appropriate step.

Moving Down the Ladder Anytime the student goes 5 days without receiving an office referral s/he will move down the ladder to the previous step, i.e. step 1 to step 0.

Moving Up the Ladder It is important to note that students can move up the ladder and receive increasing consequences in two ways:

1. By making an infraction "strike" that automatically has a corresponding consequence, a step on the discipline ladder, an example would be swearing (In School Suspension), fighting (Out of School Suspension), drugs (OSS), etc. 2. By being on a step and making an infraction "strike" within 5 school days, regardless of the infraction, it would be a strike on the ladder. 3. Students can move up the ladder rather quickly according to their behavior and receive consequences. It is important for students to be aware of his or her actions. For the student to move back down the ladder, he or she must behave appropriately for 5 school days.

Serving a Teacher Detention or Office Detention * If the student fails to stay for a scheduled teacher/team detention, the teacher/team may wish to take other actions. This may include an office referral

Medomak Middle School-- 18 and a step on the ladder. On or before the day the student is scheduled to stay after school, a phone call, note, or other form of communication must occur between the parent and the school. * If the student fails to stay for an office detention when scheduled, an in-school suspension will be imposed and parents will be notified of the infraction.

Suspensions Our students are generally well behaved. Unfortunately, there are times when a student tests the rules. In such a case, the procedures listed above and the classroom procedures are implemented. In any situation that is serious and/or violent, causes physical harm to others, involves fighting, etc., an automatic suspension is given. In situations where a student infringes on the learning of others, that student will be removed from class. The administration reserves the right to suspend any student at his/her discretion for any serious and/or flagrant behavior. Prior to the student's return to school, a conference with the parent(s), the administration, and the teacher(s) may be required. Any student who is suspended out-of-school is not allowed on any school property during the days of suspension.

It is the responsibility of the student to complete all outstanding work while on suspension. The staff may provide work for students on suspension.

Student Behavior Consequences We realize it would be impossible to list every infraction that may occur, but below is a list of misbehaviors and corresponding consequences for you to review. It is important to note that all of the infractions listed are equivalent to a "step" on the discipline ladder.

Consequences issued by Teacher / Team: This may include: verbal warnings, informal consequences, calls to parents, letters to parents (possibly via assignment notebook), teacher/team detentions are consider step 0 on the ladder.

Step 0 * Dress code violation * Food/drink in class * Excessive talking * Not returning school papers (midterms, report cards) * Inappropriate displays of affection (hand-holding, kissing, hugging, etc.) * Disturbing teaching/learning * Uncooperative/does not respond to adult request * Breaking of established Classroom rules * Tardy to class

Incidents of the following nature will be brought to an administrator's attention immediately and will result in a student being placed on the appropriate step on the Discipline Ladder: Consequences could include immediate in-school suspension (ISS), or possible out-of -school suspension (OSS), at the administration’s discretion.

Step 1 * Skipping class

Medomak Middle School-- 19 * Inappropriate lunch decorum (not cleaning up, messy table, throwing food) * In hallway without a pass * Leaving class without permission * Defiance, refusing to follow adult request * Throwing objects (food, books, snowballs, etc.) * Unsafe Behavior (this may result in step 3 depending on severity) Step 2 * Profane, offensive or confrontational language, gestures, swearing Step 3 * Skipping detention * Stealing * Forgery * Cheating * Plagiarizing * Skipping school (truant) * Damage to school or personal property: graffiti (requires financial restitution) * Aggressive/unsafe behavior (pushing, shoving, fighting). Even if no harm ensues. Step 3-9 * Threatening/harassing students (depending on severity). * Possession of a lighter or matches

The following incidents will not be tolerated under any circumstances and will result in immediate out-of-school suspension. A student/parent conference with administration is required before readmission.

Step 6-9 * Threatening authority figures * Leaving school without permission * Blatant disrespect to authority figures (profanity, obscene gestures) * Fighting * Possession/distribution/use of prohibited chemical substance (see policy) Step 10 *Possession of a weapon in school

Discipline Ladder Step 0: Informal consequences, verbal warnings, teacher detentions, loss of breaks, time-outs, “stop” sheets. Teacher maintains documentation for self and for office referrals, if necessary. Step 1: 1 Office detention, communication home. Teacher submits "Office Referral" to office with attached copies of "Classroom Records" which state previous attempts made by the teacher or team. Step 2: 2 Office detentions, communication home. Step 3: 1 day ISS, communication home. Step 4: 1 day OSS, phone call and letter to parents. Step 5: 3 days ISS, phone call and letter to parents. Step 6: 3 days OSS, phone call and letter to parents, possible student/parent conference with administration required for readmission. Step 7: 5 days OSS, phone call and letter to parents, possible student/parent conference with administration required for readmission.

Medomak Middle School-- 20 Step 8: 7 days OSS, phone call and letter to parents, student/parent conference with administration required for readmission, behavior plan required for readmission. Step 9: 10 days OSS, superintendent of schools notified, phone call and letter to parents, student/parent conference with administration required for readmission, behavior plan required for readmission. Step 10: 10 days OSS and referral to superintendent of schools with recommendation for extended suspension or expulsion.

Threats from students: Every precaution is taken to ensure the safety of students and staff at the Medomak Middle School. Any person who makes a threat against the school or threatens the safety of student(s) or school personnel will be reported to the local law enforcement officials. Students who threaten school safety or the life of other students or school personnel may be suspended from school until a risk assessment is completed by a qualified mental health professional which indicates that the student does not pose a serious threat to individual(s) or school safety. In addition, other conditions for re- admittance to school may include a written commitment from the parent that the child will not have access to weapons and school staff must acknowledge that their own safety needs have been met.

It is unfortunate that such precautions are necessary but with the nature of school violence increasing in severity, our school community cannot be exposed to such risk. Please be sure to tell your child to avoid making threatening statements because the consequences are grave and costly.

End of Year Activities: In the last term, students on or above step 6 on the ladder will not be allowed on the 8th grade class trip. Students on or above step 3 will not be allowed to attend the 8th grade dance.

Consistency with Ladder: Administration will take every possible measure to ensure consistency with this ladder. However, there may be decisions that will require discretion on a case-by-case basis.

Family Custodial and Student Rights--Your rights under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) are summarized below.

Student Education Records Upon request, any parent of a child attending the Medomak Middle School has the following rights concerning his/her child’s education records. Students who have attained 18 years of age also have the same rights regarding their school records. 1. To receive a list of the types and locations of educational records kept on your child. 2. To inspect and review any of your child’s records. 3. To receive copies of the records for which the school may charge a minimal duplication fee.

Medomak Middle School-- 21 4. To have someone at your child’s school explain or interpret any item in your child’s records that you do not understand. 5. To have a person of your choosing inspect and review the records. 6. To ask for an amendment of any record on the grounds that it is inaccurate, misleading, or violates privacy rights. 7. To request a hearing on the issue if the school refuses to amend the child’s record.

Further information concerning your rights can be found at msad40.org

It is the responsibility of MSAD#40/RSU40 to protect the rights of all students. School staff members sometimes face a dilemma between their responsibilities to assure the safety of students and their desires to respect the rights of parents. In situations involving divorce or estranged parents, both parents will be given the following opportunities until or unless the school, which limits access, receives an official court order by one or both parents: 1. View the child’s school reports 2. Receive school progress reports 3. Participate in parent-teacher conferences 4. Receive notices and newsletters of school activities

Only a legal document (e.g. final divorce decree which includes specific denial of visitation rights or a restraining order denying visiting rights) can prevent a parent from participating in the activities above. It is the responsibility of the custodial parent to notify the school principal of any restrictions on school-related rights and to provide a certified copy of any legal action.

For the school’s purposes, the parent who resides with the child is considered the resident parent. In situations where the divorce decree grants joint custody, if the student resides with one parent during the school week, that parent shall be considered the resident parent for purposes of this policy.

Only the resident parent has the right to visit a student at school or remove the student from school property unless a noncustodial parent has the written permission of the resident parent. If a question of parental residence arises, the school principal will require a copy of legal paperwork from the parent attesting to custody.

Athletics/Extracurricular Activities

MSAD#40/RSU40 Athletic Philosophy The MSAD#40/RSU40 interscholastic athletic program plays an integral role in the total curriculum program. Benefits developed by interscholastic participation include: good sportsmanship, team play, a competitive spirit, a higher degree of physical fitness, motor skill, and the development of emotional and mental attitudes that benefit the individual, the school, and the community. As a result of these benefits, the individual will develop a positive feeling of self worth, commitment, and the meaning of cooperation among associates.

Medomak Middle School-- 22 Every student taking part in the interscholastic athletic program should realize that this participation is a privilege and that he/she must be prepared to follow all rules, as set forth by this handbook, and those of the local administration and school board.

Code of Ethics It is the duty of all concerned that middle school extracurricular participants will follow the code of ethics set forth by the district.

1. Cultivate awareness that participation in school activities is part of the total education experience and, as such; no one should either seek or expect academic privileges for the participants. 2. Emphasize the proper ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and fair play as they relate to the lifetime impact on the participants and spectators. 3. Develop an awareness and understanding of all rules and guidelines governing competition, both in letter and intent, and to comply with them in all activities. 4. Recognize that the purpose of activities in school programs is to develop and promote the physical, mental, moral, social and emotional well being of individual participants. 5. Avoid any practice or technique, which would endanger the present or future welfare or safety of a participant. 6. Avoid practices that force or encourage students to specialize or which restrict them from participation in a variety of activities. 7. Refrain from making disparaging remarks to opponents, officials, coaches, or spectators in any aspect of school activities. 8. Vigorously encourage the development of proper health habits and discourage the use of chemicals, including alcohol and tobacco. 9. Exemplify proper self-control at all times and accept adverse decisions without public display of emotion or dissatisfaction. 10. Encourage everyone to judge the true success of the activities programs on the basis of the attitude of the participants and spectators, rather than on the basis of a win or loss.

MSAD#40/RSU40 Athletic Code In order to continue the fine tradition in athletics that MSAD#40/RSU40 has built over the years, the following athletic code has been adopted by the MSAD#40/RSU40 School Board of Directors. It is suggested that all students desiring to take advantage of the athletic program in the schools carefully scrutinize this code before deciding to become a squad member. Parents should also be familiar with this code.

ELIGIBILITY 1. Before any athlete can participate in tryouts, he/she must have returned to the coach, a signed parental permission slip. Physical exams are also required prior to practicing or participating in a sport. Results of the physical examination and sports Participation Approval form must be forwarded to MSAD #40’s/RSU40’s District Health Office. 2. Team managers shall be considered as squad members and shall meet the same requirements as the athlete.

Medomak Middle School-- 23 3. Athletes will be allowed to change from one sport to another only by mutual consent of the coaches involved and the Athletic Director. This change should be made prior to the last "cut" in a "cut" sport and prior to the first contest in a "no cut" sport. Special cases will be administered by the Administration.

CONDUCT 1. Participation in all extra curricular activities, including athletics, is considered an earned privilege. Students participating in our activities and/or athletics must maintain good academic and behavior standards - academics are the reason for the school in the first place. The administration reserves the right to withdraw, or bar entirely from participation in athletics and other activities, any student whose grades and/or behavior is not of a satisfactory level.

2. Students will be ineligible for extracurricular activities if they receive an in- school or out-of-school suspension. Not only will the student be ineligible for their duration of the suspension, but upon return to school he or she, will also be ineligible for the same number of days that she/he was on ISS or OSS. At the coaches discretion the student may be allowed to practice, but not participate in games. For example: (OSS) Student X gets suspended for 5 days. Because he is not allowed on school grounds, he becomes ineligible for practices and games. Upon the returning to school on Monday, he may practice that week, but not play in any games. (ISS) Student X receives a day of ISS. He/she may not practice or play that day. If there is a practice the following day, he may practice. However, if there is a game, he will not be eligible. 3. All squad members will abide by any additional rules set forth by the coach in writing. Squad members and parents will acknowledge receipt of these rules in writing.

ATTENDANCE 1. Regular school attendance is required of all athletes. At MSAD#40/RSU40 schools, students must be present for morning attendance, and remain for the entire school day to be eligible for the after school activity (practice or game). Legitimate excuses will be given consideration by the school administration. 2. Athletes suspended from school shall not be allowed to practice or take part in contests while on suspension.

ACADEMICS 1. Academics should be the student's priority at the MSAD#40/RSU40 Schools. A student must be passing in order to be part of a team. If at mid-term or end-of-quarter the student is failing any subject, the student will be ineligible to play in a game for five school days. During that time, the player must attend all practices and dress for games, but will not play. If after five school days the player is passing, he/she may resume game play. If the player is not passing, he/she will be ineligible for five more school days. If the player is passing at the end of the second check, he/she may resume game play. If the player is still not passing, he/she will remain ineligible until the next sports activity. The student should take this time to raise his/her grades.

Medomak Middle School-- 24 2. Eligibility will be called into play when midterms or report cards are issued, not when they close. 3. All coaches or advisors will conduct biweekly checks of student progress.

CUT POLICY MSAD#40/RSU40 does not encourage a "cut" policy, but does recognize the need to limit, in various sports, the number of team members that can be safely handled by the coaching staff. There may also be a need to bar individual students for various reasons.

CONFLICTS IN STUDENT ACTIVITIES A student who attempts to participate in several co-curricular activities both in and out of school, will, undoubtedly, be in a position of conflict of obligations. We understand that each student shall have the opportunity for a broad range of experiences in the area of co-curricular activities. To help accomplish this, the administration will attempt to schedule events so as to reduce the chance of conflicts. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the advisors, coaches or faculty members involved immediately when a conflict arises. No student will be penalized for any decision that he/she makes.

TRANSPORTATION All athletes are required to travel to and from contests with the team in school provided transportation. Permission to return home with parents after an away contest may be granted on special occasions. The parents must see the coach prior to taking the athlete home.

TRAINING RULES A student will be subject to consequences if he or she violates the MSAD #40’s/RSU40’s Chemical Health Policy during the season. Students and parents must note that violators may be barred from all participation based on section 2a conduct. See the policy later in this handbook for more information.

ATHLETIC COUNCIL 1. The council will oversee any appeals or meetings regarding student eligibility for middle school. 2. The council will be comprised of administration and athletic director from the middle school. 3. Appeals will be made in writing and directed to the principal. 4. The decision of the Athletic Council will be final.

Medomak Middle School-- 25 MSAD#40/RSU40 Student Code of Conduct

The School Board of MSAD#40/RSU40 is committed to maintaining a supportive and orderly school environment in which students may receive and staff may deliver a quality education without disruption or interference and in which students may develop as ethical, responsible and involved citizens. To achieve this goal, MSAD#40/RSU40 has established a set of expectations for student conduct. These expectations are based on the values identified by the community as essential to ethical and responsible behavior. The board believes that each member of the school community should take responsibility for his/her own behavior. To that end, the board recognizes the need to define unacceptable student conduct, identify the possible consequences for unacceptable conduct, and ensure that discipline is administered fairly, promptly, and appropriately. Having considered the input of administrators, parents, students, and the community, the Board adopts this Student Code of Conduct (“Code”), consistent with the requirements of 20-A MRSA § 1001(15) (adoption of Student Code of Conduct). The Code applies to students who are on school property, who are in attendance at school or at any school-sponsored activity, or whose conduct at any time or place directly interferes with the operations, discipline, or general welfare of the school.
