Hanks, Spielberg tops in U.S. Army Europe Hollywood poll June 8, 2011 By U.S. Army Europe Public Affairs HEIDELBERG, Germany -- “Band of Brothers” narrowly edged “Saving Private Ryan” in a two-week U.S. Army Europe Web poll asking the public to select their five favorite Related Links films portraying U.S. Soldiers in Europe. Poll Results The final tally for the top spot was 128 votes to 126, revealing the powerful appeal Tom U.S. Army Europe Facebook Hanks and Steven Spielberg hold among poll participants in detailing the experiences of U.S. Army Europe Twitter WWII veterans. U.S. Army Europe YouTube The two movies were both the result of collaborations by the Hollywood A-listers. U.S. Army Europe Flickr Rounding out the top five was “The Longest Day,” a 1962 drama starring John Wayne about the events of D-Day; “Patton,” directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1970 and starring George C. Scott as the famed American general; and “A Bridge Too Far,” a 1977 film starring Sean Connery about the failed Operation Market- Garden. The poll received a total of 814 votes and was based on the realism, entertainment value and overall quality of 20 movies featuring the U.S. Army in Europe. Some of Hollywood's biggest stars throughout history - Elvis, Clint Eastwood, Gary Cooper, Bill Murray, Gene Hackman – have all taken turns on the big screen portraying U.S. Soldiers in Europe. But to participants of the U.S. Army Europe poll, it was the lesser-known “Band of Brothers” in Easy Company who were most endearing. -

GEORGE GRIZZARD A Conversation With Abe J Bassett at Wright State University February 5, 1984 Introduction merican actor George Gizzard’s first connection with Wright State was in October, 1974 A when he directed William Saroyan’s The Time of Your Life, the dedicatory production of the Creative Arts Center’s Festival Playhouse. In January 1984, he returned to Wright State to create the role of Dr. Martin Dysart in the very successful Department of Theatre Arts production of Equus. The following summary of his film and theatre career is from Wikipedia: Grizzard memorably appeared as an unscrupulous United States senator in the film Advise and Consent in 1962. His other theatrical films included the drama From the Terrace with Paul Newman (1960), the Western story Comes a Horseman with Jane Fonda (1978) and a Neil Simon comedy, Seems Like Old Times (1980). -

This tall, lean, handsome, urbane, but unflamboyant model of a corporation president makes film hits so easily, so efficiently, and so calmly that he is not news in a community of blaring trumpets, crashing cymbals and screaming egos." -Frank Capra Henry King, one of the founding fathers of American film, who began his career early in the century, remains today one of the legendary figures in Hollywood, and though he preserves his privacy, his films such as "The Song of Bernadette," "Twelve O'clock High" and "The Gunfighter" speak for themselves, and these and other major works will be part of a seven week retrospective given in King's honor by New York's Museum of Modern Art in association with the Directors Guild of America. The Virginia-born director, who has specialized, like D.W. Griffith and John Ford, in Americana themes since his first classic, "Tol'able David," and later with "State Fair", "In Old Chicago," "Jesse James" and "Alexander's Ragtime Band," will make a trip from the West Coast to New York to participate in the opening of this program. On June 29 and 30, he will address the Museum audiences, although he seldom makes public appearances. While he contributed to Hollywood's worldwide reputation, King, who recognized such early superstars as Richard Barthelmess, Ronald Colman and Gary Cooper and gave them their first leading roles on the screen, has managed to retain his relative anonymity in an ostentatious environment. -

http://spider.georgetowncollege.edu/htallant/border/bs10/fr-harw.htm Border States: Journal of the Kentucky-Tennessee American Studies Association, No. 10 (1995) DOCUMENTING THE DIRECTOR: DELBERT MANN, HIS LIFE, HIS WORK, AND HIS PAPERS Sarah Harwell Vanderbilt University Library The Papers of Delbert Mann at the Special Collections Library of Vanderbilt University provide not only a rich chronicle of the award-winning television and motion picture director's life and work, but also document the history of aspects of American popular culture and motion picture art in the latter half of the twentieth century. Delbert Mann was born in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1920. He moved to Nashville, which he considers his home town, as a young boy when his father came to teach at Scarritt College. He graduated from Hume-Fogg High School and Vanderbilt University, where Dinah Shore and Mann's future wife, Ann Caroline Gillespie, were among his classmates. Also in Nashville he developed a lifelong friendship with Fred Coe through their mutual involvement in the Nashville Community Playhouse. Coe would play a very important role in Mann's life. A few months after his graduation from Vanderbilt in 1941, Mann joined the Eighth Air Force, for which he completed thirty-five missions as a pilot of a B-24 bomber. After the end of the Second World War he attended the Yale Drama School, followed by two years as director of the Town Theatre of Columbia, South Carolina. In 1949, Fred Coe, already a producer at NBC television network, invited Delbert Mann to come to New York to direct live television drama on the "Philco Television Playhouse." Then in its infancy, television offered many fine original plays to its relatively small viewing audience. -
