SJU NEWS BITES St. JOSEPH UNIVERSITY VOLUME:2 [ NO. 2] 2019 BI-MONTHLY

EDITORIAL Dear Friends, The members of the editorial board acknowledge your encouragement and appreciation for the first issue of the “SJU News bites” . Enlightened by your support we gratefully present to you this issue. Thomas Merton in his “Thoughts in Solitude” says “I will not fear, for you are with me , and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.”This is the assurance that we all celebrate at the observance of the festival of Easter that we had in the past month. It is a celebration of life and light , hope and faith. It brings a sense of esteem that there is greater expectation beyond the human experiences of limitations. We have a restless search for God. This unsettled search makes us find meaning in the resurrection of Christ. In the words of St Augustine of Hippo “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” It is this confidence that there is an ultimate end of life that welcomes everyone to his presence of abundance and of goodness. The challenge that is posed before us to reach such a state of goodness is proposed by St John Paul II as he says “In a cul- ture that holds that no universally valid truths are possible, nothing is absolute. Therefore, in the end they say objective goodness and evil no longer really matter. Good comes to mean what is pleasing or useful at a particular moment. Evil means what contradicts our subjective wishes. Each person can build a private system of values.” Many of these private systems of values do not satisfy anyone, some of them scare people, some of them cause disillusionment, and some re- main passive. This leads to constant tension between ideas and realities. Realities simply are and ideas are worked out. There has to be continuous dialogue between the two, lest ideas become detached from realities. In fact realities are greater than ideas. There is a need to reject various forms of masking reality, angelic forms of purity and objectives more ideal than real, ethical systems bereft of kindness and intellectual discourse bereft of wisdom. In the context of educating the young people it is found that they criss-cross the world like a lost tribe seeking a place where somebody will really tell them without words that they love them. They seek God in so many words, and God will be given to them by those who have faith and are filled with hope and love. May our education lead us to the experi- ence of faith first of all in the ability of humanity, hope for its goodness and love for its fullness. With best of regards Editors

Dear Readers,

I feel pleasure to meet you through this newsletter. Here I would like to recall the words of David Frost. Don’t aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally.

In this modern and sophisticated world many people are feeling their life as a strained one. The main reason for this is they are not satisfied with what they have and they do not do what they love. If you want to be happy and joyful, do what you love. You choose your profession and carrier as per your inner desire. Don’t let the influence of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice and have the nerve to track your heart and intuition.

Do what you love, and the money will follow. Do what you love and the business will follow. Do what you love and the success will follow. Do what you love, and the happiness will follow. Do what you love, and the serenity will follow.

Best Wishes Prof. Dr. D. Gnanadurai, B.E., M.S., Ph.D., Vice Chancellor St. Joseph University Dimapur, Nagaland. DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY 1. Literary Club coordinators (Department of English): Mr. Rajesh Tayenjam Ms. Krelo Vincenza Mr. J Ajith Mr. V Reynold Kingslin Raj AN INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL ENGINEERING

“Scientists study the world as it is; Engineers create the world that has never been.” —Theodore von Karman

The word “Engineering” means the application of scientific, economic, social, and practical knowledge, in order to design, build, and maintain structures, ma- chines, devices, systems, materials and processes. The field of engineering is infinite like multitudinous galaxies in the sky, sand particles in deserts etc. Engi- neering is all around us; in fact it lies under our feet too. Engineering is said to have infinite disciplines. Some of which are major and oth- ers are the sub-disciplines of major ones. However, every branch of engineering is linked each other in one way or the other

Civil Engineering is considered as the ‘mother of all types of engineering’. It is one of the most rampant disciplines of engineering. It is the oldest engineering discipline after military engineering. From the word ‘CIVIL’ one can understand the meaning of it; it roughly means ‘Construction Is Very Important in Life’. But, if we have bird eye view on its application and careers, one can understand that, it is not only limited to construction. It is also applied on the natural structures along with the construction of structures such as dams, bridges, roads, buildings, walls and the like. In , if we go a few decades back, it was considered as one of the elite engi- neering field. Civil engineering, in the past, was a way for the elite Government jobs. After few decades, in present, because of many new emerging fields, it has now, somewhat lost its glory. However, in the less developed states of India, it still is a legitimate course to study for one in pursue of elite government jobs.

Besides Government sectors, there are a number of private companies and indus- tries that recruit civil engineering graduates every year. In fact, Industry experts estimate that India faces a shortage of over 70,000 civil engineers each year. It is not surprising, when you have just one in ten IIT students opting for the civil en- gineering discipline.

Civil engineering has numerous sub-disciplines; they can be divided into disci- plines such as structural engineering, transportation engineering, coastal engi- neering, construction engineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical en- gineering; geophysics engineering, geodesy engineering, control engineering, atmospheric sciences, forensic engineering, urban engineering and materials en- gineering. Apart from these disciplines, there are many other new disciplines too. One must study a four-year course containing eight semesters and clear all theory and laboratory papers in order to achieve a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. Civil engineering is not a hard discipline, and neither is it easy. But, we know, the harder the battle, the sweeter the victory is.

Metsizo Zhasa B.Tech (Civil Engineering) IV Semester St Joseph University ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

Environmental issues are very harmful on human activity and also on biophysical environment. Environmentalism is a social and environmental movement and it acts on environmental issues. To reduce or prevent effect of environmental issues Sustainability is the important key.

A clean environment is very necessary to live a peaceful and healthy life. But our environment is getting dirty day by day because of some negligence of human beings. It is an issue which everyone must know. Now, in the era of advance living standard of the human being, our environment is getting affected to a great extent by the all means of pollution and other danger- ous disasters created by the human beings through technological advancement. We all must take an oath together to protect our natural environment to keep it safe as usual forever. Here Civic sense plays a very important role

CIVIC sense means social ethics. Its examples include keeping roads, streets and public places clean. It reflects the actual personality and shows the respon- sibility of any person. It encompasses unspoken norms of society that help it run smoothly without someone tripping on somebody else’s toes. Unfortunately, we are lacking in our collective moral behavior as we do not care for anyone in society. We have become too lazy to show our sympathies and re- spect which we ought to do. We should be proud of our cultural, religious, social, educational and even more our nation’s civilization. But irrespective of all these factors, we are going backward in our mannerisms and behaviorism. We are por- traying bad images for our own society and civilized sense in the world.

Our people score a big zero when it comes to civic sense. They are so irrespon- sible that they do not bother about health and hygiene. No one is born civilized. It’s a struggle and a sense that makes one more civilized and full of good etiquettes. We ought to learn to be a good citizen. ~I don't want to protect the Environment; I want to create a world 🌎 where the Environment doesn't need Protection, We won't have a society if we destroy the Environment~ "So let’s join together for a better environment 🌎

ZehovireAviKechü Assistant class representative M.A 2nd Semester History Department WHAT PEOPLE THINK ABOUT FAILURE Well, everybody talk so much about failures in everyday life and consider it as a hin- drance, none of us would want to let failure encounter in one’s life. People usually regard it as the most undeniable pain, rejection, agony and unsuitable situation that one has to go through. Most people often find themselves lost their confidence and did not dare to face it as fear and doubt rules over them and forget about the great potentialities and power that is hidden within oneself.

To some extent it is true that failure brings discomfort, pain, sorrow and shame in one’s life to a certain period of time. But when we change our ability of thinking positively about failure as a lesson in a good way rather than fearing about facing it, there is always a possibility of getting through into it. And that one need not have to distress so much on thinking about the things and started questioning about what happen if I can’t do it and what will be the consequences?

Therefore it is very important that one need to have a clear concept about failure, as it is a part of event or a stage of experiencing certain things in life. No man on this earth are ever born gifted in everything knowing about all the things, therefore every human be- ing faced failure in one way or the other in every areas. It is true that when one is new to something he/she lacks confidence and things gets mess up often, there are mistakes and failures in every first attempt, people fail at job, fail at test and even fail in the exams.

Some of us look at failure as a lack of success, mistakes or a weakness. But the question is, are we allowing that failure to stop us from reaching our goals. And some even says, the word “FAIL” is a ‘First Attempt In Learning’ thus it is important to know the clear concept about failures and develop one’s own career in building up personality to conquer fail- ure and rise again to meet the challenges in life and stop doubting oneself because when one doubt, fear and doubt rule over our life and thus this will poison and deceive one to achieve his goal. As failure is a very common issue as every human faces but it is totally up to us whether failure stop us or rather do something great to fight back and grow stronger.

'A smile is the best makeup any girl can wear.' Fashion is a popular style, especially in clothing, hairstyle and body. Rokowheno Metha BA, II Semester Department of Journalism and Mass Communication Create to share; Share to create The most famous social platform for content creators, i.e., YouTube has inspired many young and old people to come forth with ideas and content that can be shared with masses of viewers. This has led to rise of many channels that posts daily videos for entertainment and education based on the choices you choose to watch, giving you a seat to control the interests that you seek to view and share. Since 2005, the website has been gaining support and views at an alarming rate. Now it is a go-to place for people of all ages to escape from work and relax, whether you’re a student or a grown working man. It provides genres of all types of videos, from music videos to learning how to cook different cuisines. Whatever you are searching for, YouTube probably has it. It’s Google but only provides videos that you can also interact with depending on the channel you watch.

Although, with such great technology also comes great responsibility. People need to be careful of what they post on the media as it can lead to people’s sentiments being hurt and may be taken to court if not properly managed and used, this goes under posting graphic content that are unsafe as men and women of all ages use this website in their spare time. Students from high schools whose ages are below 18 are increasing everyday leading to a rise of new viewers with their own ability to search anything on the site.

This can make YouTube a dangerous place, but luckily there are many workers who ensure that whatever is posted in YouTube is user friendly to the eyes of the viewers. As of now, content creators showcase their skills and abilities make a living out of it by earning revenue through YouTube algorithm. Anyone can be a content creator, even you.

YouTube provides a global platform of continuous interaction between the people of the world, whether you’re from India or America you make something that can be seen and witnessed around the world in just a matter of seconds and help out others in various ways from the comments you type or the support you show to the person by subscribing and liking their videos.

People’s views come into importance here. YouTube can be a way of life to some people or it can be a source of entertainment and learning to the majority, it all comes down to you viewers and content creators. Now ask yourself this, “What would happen if there was no YouTube?”

WHERE THE EAGLE GOES

Twinkle A short story B. A Semester II Department of English

When destiny calls... An eagle was hatched and brought up inside a cage. His whole life was confu- sion. Nobody answered why he had such magnificent and glorious wings or why his vision was excep- tionally good. So he would randomly mumble at night when all the other birds are asleep that one day he would go and see for himself how the clouds look up-close, also how it felt to be so free. So the eagle lived irritated and befuddled among some other inferior birds who worshipped his physicality.

One fine day, a terrible weather shook the horizons of the earth and sky and left a crevice on its iron cage. The rapidity of the surging hailstorms and cries of animals and other inhabitants rattled all his nerves. The eagle wanted to make an escape. For the first time in his life, he decided to fly higher than the ceiling of the cage. On one hand, the fear of death put some anchor down on his courage and on the other hand, the curiosity of knowing himself afforded by the situation urged him to fly as high and wild as he could possibly do.

Against the ghastly winds, the eagle took its maiden flight and in the pursuit of this adrenaline rush, he realized that the weather got less and less fearsome as he approached closer and closer to the expanse of the universe and upon reaching a certain height above the clouds in the sky, the eagle finally found an answer to all his doubts. He found serenity unequalled and a liberation that felt like constricted nerves being loosened at the ease of the moment. He looked down and saw the ends of the earth bending along the arches of the planet. This achievement did not make him haughty at all; he only found his home.
